Abstract: In depth genetic comparisons of populations of C utleria multifida ( T ilopteridales, P haeophyceae) collected from E urope, the northwestern P acific Ocean, A ustralia and N ew Z ealand using the DNA sequences of four gene regions (the mitochondrial cox 2 and cox 3 genes, the intergeneric spacer region adjacent to cox 3, and the open reading frame) suggested that the northwestern E uropean and J apanese populations were considerably greater in terms of their genetic divergence than M editerranean, A ustralian or N ew Z ealand populations. The haplotypes of the populations in northwestern E uropean (distribution range including the type locality, seven haplotypes) and J apanese populations (seven haplotypes) were unique except for one shared haplotype. There were weak but positive correlations between the geographical distance and the genetic divergence among northwestern E uropean and J apanese populations. Moreover, both female and male gametophytes occurred in eight of the nine J apanese localities, suggesting J apanese populations showed normal sexual heteromorphic life history of the species. In light of these results, it appears that J apanese populations were native to the area despite earlier hypothesis. In contrast, A ustralian and N ew Z ealand populations were composed of only one haplotype that is very close to those found in northwestern E urope and J apan, suggesting a recent introduction history from E urope (or from northeastern A sia via E urope) by ship transport to A ustralia and N ew Z ealand. The M editerranean populations included two haplotypes identical to those found in northwestern E urope and J apan, and it is suggestive of transoceanic introductions of some populations between M editerranean and J apanese coasts.
