Abstract: As an active member of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea - UNCLOS, Vietnam has completed 3 Reports on the Limits of the Continental Shelf and has submitted two of them to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf - CLCS, before the deadline 13-5-2009. Those are: (1) Outer Limits of the Vietnam’s Extended Continental Shelf: North Area (VNM-N); (2) Outer Limits of the Vietnam’s Extended Continental Shelf: Middle Area (VNM-M) and (3) Vietnam - Malaysia Joint Continental Shelf Submission. The VNM-M has not yet been submitted but it was mentioned to the CLCS and will be submitted in the appropriate time.Vietnam’s submissions were highly appreciated by CLCS; although the CLCS has not yet organized a special sub-committee to look at our reports, the secretariat of CLCS has already posted the executive reports of our submissions, with our principle claims on the continental shelf, on the website of the CLCS since May 2009. This paper presents shortly the UNCLOS and its application in Vietnam case.

Abstract: A Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) is an important management tool for biodiversity protection of a marine area. At the time of designation of a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area, an associated protective measure, which meets the requirements of the appropriate legal instrument establishing such measure, must have been approved or adopted by IMO to prevent, reduce, or eliminate the threat or identified vulnerability. Information on each of the Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSAs) that has been designated by IMO is available on the nautical chart. The Vietnam’s coastal zones and islands are the isolated oceanic habitat of extremely rich marine life in very good condition which is important to the maintenance and dispersal of the marine life of the western tropical Pacific. Vietnam coastal areas are very high risk areas affected by maritime activities, particularly international shipping, therefore in the future identification of some Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSAs) is necessary. The first Particularly Sensitive Sea Area for Vietnam in Ha Long - Cat Ba was initially proposed in this paper.

Abstract: The hydro-distilled essential oil from the fresh aerial part of Orchidantha vietnamica K. Larsen collected from Lamdong-Vietnam was analyzed by GC-FID (Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detection) and GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy) for the first time. The oil was characterized by the presence of volatile compounds type terpenoids, in which oxygenated monoterpenes (30.04 %) and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (37.32 %) are the major components. The oxygenated monoterpene linalool reached the highest percentage of 16.66 %, followed by the sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (E)-caryophyllene (11.4 %), α-humulene (8.00 %), and bicyclogermacrene (6.93 %). Monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated sesquiterpenoids, oxygenated diterpenes, carotenoids, and others are also detected in this oil ( 〈 3.00 %). The essential oil of O. vietnamica aerial part showed antimicrobial activity against two pathogenic bacterial strains Escherichia coli ATCC 8739 and Candida albicans ATCC 10231 with the same MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) value of 200 µg/mL.

Abstract: Entada phaseoloides (L.) Merr. belongs to Fabaceae family and widely distributes throughout Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, China, New Guinea, and Australia. In Vietnamese traditional medicine, the seeds of Entada phaseoloides were used for the treatment of stomachache, haemorrhoids, and hernia diseases. In this article, we report the isolation and structural elucidation of four glycosides from the water extract of seeds of E. phaseoloides including phaseoloideside C (1), phaseoloideside E (2), acanthoside D (3), and 1-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)prop-7-en-9-ol-O-(6ʹʹ-O-α-L-arabinopyranosyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside (4). To the best of our knowledge, compounds 3-4 were isolated from E. phaseoloides for the first time.
