Abstract: Recently, though graphene oxide (GO) has shown promising applications in many fields, there have not been many studies focusing on exploiting the source of synthetic precursors of GO. Herein, GO was synthesized from the cellulose of corncob by corncob alkalization, bleaching cellulose, pyrolysis, and improved Hummer's method. It was found that pyrolysis plays an important role in the graphitization of cellulose precursors with the catalyst Fe(NO 3 ) 3 to form Gi‐Fe(NO 3 ) 3 . The GO material synthesized from Gi‐Fe(NO 3 ) 3 was characterized by advanced analytical methods. The X‐ray diffraction pattern of Gi‐Fe(NO 3 ) 3 shows the formation of a diffraction peak at the crystal plane (002), which is characteristic of the graphite material. The synthesized GO underwent a series of changes in material structure and morphology, which are confirmed via transmission electron microscopy images showing a plate‐like structure with folds represented by the dark line. This study demonstrates a sustainable approach that directly utilizes abundant biomass resources for the synthesis of GO material.

Abstract: In this study, silver nanoparticles‐doped graphene oxide (AgNPs@GO) nanocomposite was green synthesized using the extract of Curcuma longa as an effective reducing and stabilizing agent.. Characterization of AgNPs and AgNPs@GO were thoroughly examined via several analysis methods. Thereby, the results show the successful formation as well as the uniform distribution of spherical nano‐sized silver fragments on the GO surface with an average size of 21.14 3.21 nm. The materials were then tested regarding their optical sensing for H 2 O 2 and Hg 2+ . In specific, AgNPs@GO indicated a great colorimetric detection towards H 2 O 2 and Hg 2+ with a remarkably low detection limit at 0.48 and 0.158 μM, respectively. Conclusively, AgNPs@GO nanocomposite poses a high potential in application sectors of the colorimetric sensor.

Abstract: Although epilepsy surgery is more effective than medical therapy for drug‐resistant patients, it is underutilized in both high‐income and low‐ and middle‐income countries. In light of our efforts to establish an epilepsy surgery program in a resource‐limited setting, this study aimed to determine the outcome of the epilepsy surgery program in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. Methods In 2018, we developed the HCMC epilepsy core multidisciplinary team with members from various hospitals and centers. The team typically included neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, psychiatrists, and nursing specialists. Presurgical evaluations were performed for patients with drug‐resistant epilepsy, fulfilling the ILAE criteria, with an epileptogenic lesion (mesial temporal sclerosis, low‐grade gliomas, or focal cortical dysplasia). All epilepsy surgeries were performed in two epilepsy surgery centers in HCMC between 2018 and 2021. The patients were followed up for at least 12 months. Results Fifty‐two patients with drug‐resistant epilepsy underwent presurgical evaluation, of which 35 underwent surgery. Among the 52 patients, 20 (38.5%) underwent surgery after showing concordance among the results of standard presurgical assessments such as semiology, scalp interictal or ictal electroencephalography, and brain imaging. Among the 26 people with epilepsy who required more advanced evaluations, 15 underwent surgery with intraoperative electrocorticography to delineate the optimal resection borders. The outcomes of Engel Class I and Class II were achieved in 29/35 (82.8%) and 6/35 (17.2%) patients, respectively. Significance The epilepsy surgery program with a multicentered collaborative model in a resource‐limited setting showed favorable outcomes in HCMC, Vietnam.

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the association between sperm quality assessed by routine semen analysis and sperm DNA integrity assay. Methods In our cross‐sectional study, a total of 318 men from the infertile couples were enrolled from December 2017 to March 2019 at the Hue Center for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Vietnam. General characteristics and semen parameters were detected. The sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) was estimated by the sperm chromatin dispersion (SCD) assay. A threshold of DFI 30% was applied to classify normal (DFI  〈  30%) or abnormal (DFI ≥ 30%) groups. The correlations between DFI and semen parameters were analyzed by Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. Results In the correlation analysis, DFI was significantly correlated with abnormal head and progressive motility, with a positive correlation with abnormal head ( ρ  = .202, P  = .0003) and a weak negative correlation with progressive motility ( ρ  = −.168, P  = .0027), respectively. In the bivariate analysis, DFI was associated with male age, smoking, and alcohol consumption with P   〈  .05. Conclusions The sperm DFI was not strongly correlated with conventional semen parameters. Therefore, a sperm DNA fragmentation assay should be performed as an additional step in the investigation of male fertility.

Abstract: In this study, polydimethylsiloxane/tetraethyl‐orthosilicate (PDMS/TEOS) hybrid materials with different TEOS ratios were synthesized by cross‐linking method. Ceramic tube‐supported PDMS/TEOS membranes were fabricated by dip‐coating method. Effect of TEOS content, feed concentration, and feed temperature through separation of a furfural–water mixture by pervaporation (PV) technology was investigated. The highest PV performance was obtained with the total flux of 1.19 kg/m 2 h with TEOS content of 1.8 g, furfural feed concentration of 30 wt.%, operating temperature, and vacuum pressure at 100 kPa and 50 °C, respectively. PDMS/TEOS was successfully synthesized and coated on ceramic tube‐supported with a thickness of 15 μm. The ceramic tube‐supported membrane demonstrated good hydrophobicity with a contact angle of 109.5° and excellent thermal stability at 450 °C. The obtained results demonstrated that the ceramic tube‐supported PDMS/TEOS membrane is potent to be utilized for the separation of the furfural‐water mixture by PV technology.

Abstract: This study explores the role of anti‐Mullerian hormone (AMH) and LH/FSH ratio in diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Methods In this multicentre cross‐sectional descriptive study, a total of 863 infertile women between 18 and 45 years were evaluated at three infertility centres in Vietnam and were recruited from June 2016 to June 2017. The patients were classified into two groups: Group I included 441 patients with PCOS (based on Rotterdam criteria consensus) and Group II included 422 non‐PCOS women. Diagnosis of PCOS was established based on Rotterdam 2003 consensus, and exclusion criteria were ovarian disease (ovary cyst/tumour), history of ovarian surgery and ovarian failure. Results At an optimum cut‐off level of 32.79 pmol/L, AMH showed sensitivity and specificity of 78.50% and 75.83%, respectively, with the AUC 0.852 (95% CI: 0.826‐0.875). The LH/FSH ratio had a similar AUC at the optimum cut‐off of 1.33 (AUC = 0.867, 95% CI 0.842‐0.889), which demonstrated a similar diagnosis value to AMH ( P  = 0.340). By using multiple logistic regression analysis, 1 ng/mL increase in AMH levels was associated with an increased risk of PCOS (OR = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.506‐1.764; P   〈  0.001). Similarly, one unit increase in LH/FSH ratio was associated with 14.433 times increased (95% CI: 9.302‐22.395; P   〈  0.001) risk of PCOS. There were no significant differences between values of AMH and LH/FSH ratio in PCOS diagnosis, as the difference between the two AUCs was 0.013, 95% CI: −0.024 to 0.028 and P  = 0.897. Conclusion The value of serum AMH concentration has been found not significantly superior to LH/FSH ratio in PCOS diagnosis. Although these biomarkers separately are not adequate for PCOS diagnosis based on their own value, the combination of different endocrine factors including AMH, LH and LH/FSH ratio together with BMI and other anthropometric and clinical characteristics may offer extra value to establish the diagnosis of PCOS.

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the unique phenotype of the Vietnamese polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) population. Methods In this multicenter cross‐sectional descriptive study, a total of 901 reproductive‐age women were recruited at three medical centers in Vietnam from June 2016 to May 2018. Group I included 479 patients with PCOS (Rotterdam 2003 consensus) and Group II included 422 non‐PCOS women, consisted of women with regular menstrual cycle, collected at the same time of PCOS recruitment, without ovarian disease or ovarian failure. Main outcome measures were anthropomorphic, serum hormone, ultrasound and physical characteristics of PCOS. Results The Vietnamese PCOS population was lean, but with a higher weight and body mass index compared to controls. About 34.4% of PCOS subjects had hirsutism, primarily confined to the leg, arm and pubis. The PCOS population had higher serum luteinizing hormone (LH), LH : follicle stimulating hormone ratio, anti‐Mullerian hormone and testosterone. The PCOS population had double the ovarian volume compared to controls. PCOS subjects had no increase in metabolic disease history and had on average optimal serum markers for low metabolic disease risk. Group D (O + polycystic ovary morphology [PCOM]) was the most prevalent phenotype noted in our Vietnamese PCOS cohort (67.6%). Modified Ferriman–Gallwey, levels of LH, testosterone and anti‐Mullerian hormone were highest in Group A (O + H + PCOM) and lowest in Group D (O + PCOM). Conclusion The Vietnamese PCOS population is characterized by a lean body type, nonfacial hirsutism, anovulatory, enlarged ovaries and typical PCOS serum hormone markers, low risk factors for metabolic syndrome. Nonclassical phenotypes for PCOS were more frequent than the classic phenotype.

Abstract: In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was prepared from graphite by improved Hummers’ method. Graphene oxide aerogel (GOA) was synthesized via the ice segregation induced self‐assembly method. Various modern analytical methods were utilized to characterize GOA. The results revealed the aerogel structure with a pore size of 100–150 μm, a specific surface area of 515.21 m 2 /g, and a pore volume of 2.08–2.16 cm 3 /g. The synthesized GOA was applied as an adsorbent for the removal of phenol (PN) and bisphenol A (BPA) with a maximum adsorption capacity of 117.65 and 70.17 mg/g, respectively. Response surface methodology involving a rotating central composite design was applied to investigate simultaneously the effects of adsorption variables including adsorption time, pH, and initial concentration on the removal efficiency of GOA for PN or BPA. The results showed that the optimal adsorption efficiency for PN was 92.15 % with an adsorption time of 208.52 min, a pH of 6.08, and an initial PN concentration of 30 mg/L. Regarding BPA, the optimal adsorption efficiency was 95.27 % with an adsorption time of 352.79 min, a pH of 4.91, and an initial BPA concentration of 20 mg/L. The adsorption of both PN and BPA onto GOA was appropriate with the Langmuir model, in which the maximum adsorption capacity of GOA for PN and BPA was 117.65 and 70.175 mg/g, respectively. The results confirmed that the adsorption of PN and BPA onto GOA was monolayer adsorption on a homogeneous surface. The adsorption mechanism of GOA for PN or BPA depended mainly on the electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding between −OH of PN, BPA, and oxygen‐containing functional groups of GOA. Besides, π‐π interaction between carbon rings of GOA and PN or BPA also contributed to the enhancement of adsorption performance. The results showed that GOA exhibited potential application in the treatment of organic pollutants. Besides, the evaluation of the morphology of the GOA and the simultaneous effects of different factors can contribute to the advancement of graphene‐based materials and the improvement of wastewater treatment.

Abstract: Herein, poly(propylene) (PP) was hydrophilized with oxidating agents and solvents, followed by dip‐coating with silver nanoparticles anchored GO sheets (Ag@GO) prepared by the in‐situ method as reported in our previous study to obtain silver@graphene oxide‐coated poly(propylene) (Ag@GO/PP). The impact of the modifying agents, dipping times, and coating concentrations on the antibacterial activities were studied accordingly via the inhibition zone method. The fabrics were re‐hydrophobized with the reduction of Ag@GO and the functionalization with stearic acid (SA) to form silver@reduced graphene oxide‐coated poly(propylene) (Ag@rGO/PP) and silver@graphene oxide/SA‐coated poly(propylene) (Ag@rGO‐SA/PP), respectively. Characterization of pretreated and modified PP samples was carried out by various modern analysis methods. Simultaneously, the cytotoxicity of the active layers, the release of Ag + ions, and durability after washing were also investigated. The obtained results representing PP fabrics pretreated with HNO 3 /isopropanol and dipped in Ag@GO concentration of 2 g/L four times prove a sufficient approach for improving hydrophilization and bio‐compatibility for the PP samples. The fabrics greatly show an impressive interaction with precursors, mostly high antibacterial activity even after four washing cycles via appropriate releasing of Ag + to ensure the safety in usage. They further suggest that the prepared fabrics could be utilized for actual application as a face mask.
