Abstract: The compound 6‐azaindole undergoes self‐assembly by formation of N(1)−H⋅⋅⋅N(6) hydrogen bonds (H bonds), forming a cyclic, triply H‐bonded trimer. The formation phenomenon is visualized by scanning tunneling microscopy. Remarkably, the H‐bonded trimer undergoes excited‐state triple proton transfer (ESTPT), resulting in a proton‐transfer tautomer emission maximized at 435 nm (325 nm of the normal emission) in cyclohexane. Computational approaches affirm the thermodynamically favorable H‐bonded trimer formation and the associated ESTPT reaction. Thus, nearly half a century after Michael Kasha discovered the double H‐bonded dimer of 7‐azaindole and its associated excited‐state double‐proton‐transfer reaction, the triply H‐bonded trimer formation of 6‐azaindole and its ESTPT reaction are demonstrated.

Abstract: Carbodicarbene (CDC), unique carbenic entities bearing two lone pairs of electrons are well‐known for their strong Lewis basicity. We demonstrate herein, upon introducing a weak Brønsted acid benzyl alcohol (BnOH) as a co‐modulator, CDC is remolded into a Frustrated Lewis Pair (FLP)‐like reactivity. DFT calculation and experimental evidence show BnOH loosely interacting with the binding pocket of CDC via H‐bonding and π‐π stacking. Four distinct reactions in nature were deployed to demonstrate the viability of proof‐of‐concept as synergistic FLP/Modulator (CDC/BnOH), demonstrating enhanced catalytic reactivity in cyclotrimerization of isocyanate, polymerization process for L ‐lactide (LA), methyl methacrylate (MMA) and dehydrosilylation of alcohols. Importantly, the catalytic reactivity of carbodicarbene is uniquely distinct from conventional NHC which relies on only single chemical feature of nucleophilicity. This finding also provides a new spin in diversifying FLP reactivity with co‐modulator or co‐catalyst.

Abstract: The nitrogenous nucleophile electrooxidation reaction (NOR) plays a vital role in the degradation and transformation of available nitrogen. Focusing on the NOR mediated by the β‐Ni(OH) 2 electrode, we decipher the transformation mechanism of the nitrogenous nucleophile. For the two‐step NOR, proton‐coupled electron transfer (PCET) is the bridge between electrocatalytic dehydrogenation from β‐Ni(OH) 2 to β‐Ni(OH)O, and the spontaneous nucleophile dehydrogenative oxidation reaction. This theory can give a good explanation for hydrazine and primary amine oxidation reactions, but is insufficient for the urea oxidation reaction (UOR). Through operando tracing of bond rupture and formation processes during the UOR, as well as theoretical calculations, we propose a possible UOR mechanism whereby intramolecular coupling of the N−N bond, accompanied by PCET, hydration and rearrangement processes, results in high performance and ca. 100 % N 2 selectivity. These discoveries clarify the evolution of nitrogenous molecules during the NOR, and they elucidate fundamental aspects of electrocatalysis involving nitrogen‐containing species.

Abstract: A new way to form fluorenones via the direct excitation of substrates instead of photocatalyst to activate the C( sp 2 )−H bond under redox‐neutral condition is reported. Our design relies on the photoexcited aromatic aldehyde intermediates that can be intercepted by cobaloxime catalyst through single electron transfer for following β‐H elimination. The generation of acyl radical and successful interception by a metal catalyst cobaloxime avoid the use of a photocatalyst and stoichiometric external oxidants, affording a series of highly substituted fluorenones, including six‐membered ketones, such as xanthone and thioxanthone derivatives in good to excellent yields, and with hydrogen as the only byproduct. This catalytic system features a readily available metal catalyst, mild reaction conditions and broad substrate scope, in which sunlight reaction and scale‐up experiments by continuous‐flow approach make the new methodology sustainable and amenable for potentially operational procedures.

Abstract: Phenothiazine derivatives based on the 10‐phenyl‐10H‐phenothiazine ( NAS ) chromophore, namely 7‐phenyl‐7 H ‐benzo[c]phenothiazine ( NAS‐1 ) and 12‐phenyl‐12H‐benzo[a]phenothiazine ( NAS‐2 ), were designed and synthesized. NAS‐1 and NAS‐2 are constitutional isomers with different steric strains imposed on the phenothiazine core moiety. In solution, the more‐strained NAS‐2 possesses a bent structure and undergoes photoinduced structural planarization (PISP). In the crystal, despite the absence of PISP, bent NAS‐2 exhibits prominent excimer emission as well as emission mechanochromism, which is not observed in the planar‐like NAS and NAS‐1 . This unconventional observation results from the bent core structure facilitating π–π stacking of the peripheral naphthalene moieties. Two‐photon‐coupled depth‐dependent emission shows spectral differences between the surface and kernel of the NAS‐2 crystal, and is believed to be a general phenomenon, at least in part, for materials exhibiting emission mechanochromism.
