    Abstract: We compared the characteristics of air-conducted sound cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (ACS-cVEMP) and bone-conducted vibration cVEMP (BCV-cVEMP) among 3-month-old infants with normal hearing and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), and healthy adults to explore the feasibility and optimal strategies for infant vestibular screening. Methods 29 infants (58 ears) were divided into two groups according to hearing (group I: normal hearing ears; group II: SNHL ears), 20 healthy adults were defined as group III. The results of response rate, P13 and N23 latency, P13-N23 interval, amplitudes, and corrected interaural asymmetry ratio (IAR) were recorded and compared among three groups. Results The response rates of ACS-cVEMP in three groups were 88.89, 62.00, 100%, respectively. The P13 and N23 latencies, and P13-N23 interval did not differ significantly between group I and II ( p = 0.866, p = 0.190, p = 0.252). A significant difference was found between group I and III ( p = 0.016, p & lt; 0.001, p & lt; 0.001). No significant difference was observed in raw or corrected amplitude between group I and II ( p = 0.741, p = 0.525), while raw and corrected amplitudes in group III were significantly larger than group I ( p & lt; 0.001, p & lt; 0.001). For BCV-cVEMP, the response rates in three groups were 100, 86.36, 100%, respectively, No significant difference existed in the P13 and N23 latency, or P13-N23 interval between group I and II ( p = 0.665, p = 0.925, p = 0.806), however, P13 and N23 latencies were significantly longer in group III than group I ( p & lt; 0.001, p = 0.018), but not in P13-N23 interval ( p = 0.110). There was no significant difference in raw or corrected amplitude between group I and II ( p = 0.771, p = 0.155) or in raw amplitude between group I and III ( p = 0.093), however, a significant difference existed in corrected amplitude between group I and III ( p & lt; 0.001). Conclusions Compared with adults, 3-month-old infants with normal hearing presented with equivalent response rates, shorter P13 and N23 latencies, smaller corrected amplitudes, and a wider IAR range for both ACS and BCV-cVEMP. SNHL infants had equivalent response rates of BCV-cVEMP, lower response rates of ACS-cVEMP than normal hearing infants. When responses were present, characteristics of ACS and BCV-cVEMP in SNHL infants were similar with normal hearing infants. ACS combined with BCV-cVEMP are recommended to improve the accuracy of vestibular screening.

    Abstract: Callose synthase plays an essential role in plant growth and development and in response to all sorts of stresses through regulating callose formation. However, few research about the function and mechanism of the insect resistance of callose synthase genes have been reported in cotton. In this study, a cotton callose synthase gene GhCalS5 was cloned, and its function and mechanism of resistance to cotton aphids were analyzed. The expression of GhCalS5 was significantly upregulated in both, leaves and stems of cotton plants at 48 h after cotton aphid infestation and in the leaves of cotton plants at 24 h after salicylic acid treatment. The overexpression of GhCalS5 enhanced cotton resistance to cotton aphids. Expectedly silencing of GhCalS5 reduced cotton resistance to cotton aphids. Overexpression of GhCalS5 enhanced callose formation in cotton leaves. Our results suggest that GhCalS5 is involved in cotton resistance against cotton aphids by influencing callose formation.

    Abstract: To investigate the associations between cognition, anxiety, depression, and residual dizziness after successful repositioning maneuvers in the elderly with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Methods We enrolled 40 elderly patients with BPPV in our outpatient department. We used the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire-7 (GAD-7) to assess the degree of dizziness, anxiety, and depression of participants before repositioning therapy, respectively. At the 1-week follow-up after BPPV treatment, each participant will be reassessed and divided into a group with residual dizziness (RD) and a group without residual dizziness (NRD) based on the follow-up DHI score. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) evaluated the cognitive function of the participants. Results The age, gender, duration of BPPV, and involved semicircular canals in the two groups did not show a significant difference. The RD group scored significantly higher on the DHI ( p = 0.006), GAD-7 ( p & lt; 0.001), and PHQ-9 ( p = 0.002) before the repositioning treatment than the NRD group. The two groups had no significant difference in MMSE score ( p = 0.381). Anxiety and depression scores before repositioning treatment significantly and positively correlated with follow-up DHI scores ( r = 0.678 and 0.522, respectively), but the MMSE score did not significantly relate to it. The univariate linear regression showed that the DHI ( p & lt; 0.001), GAD-7 ( p & lt; 0.001), and PHQ-9 ( p = 0.002) scores before treatment could predict residual dizziness. The multivariate linear regression showed that GAD-7 before treatment was the only significant predictor of residual dizziness ( p & lt; 0.001). Conclusion The level of dizziness, anxiety, and depression before treatment can predict residual dizziness after successful repositioning maneuvers in the elderly with BPPV. Anxiety may be the strongest predictor of residual dizziness after successful repositioning treatment in elderly BPPV patients.

    Abstract: This study aimed to explore the mediating effects of internet gaming disorder, social network use, and generalized pathological internet use (GPIU) on the association between loneliness and depression. A total of 2211 junior high school students completed questionnaires regarding loneliness, internet gaming disorder, social network use, GPIU, and depression (aged 10–16 years). The results of a structural equation model revealed that (a) the path coefficient of loneliness to depression was significantly positive, (b) loneliness could not predict depression through GPIU directly, but (c) loneliness could predict depression through internet gaming disorder to GPIU, (d) loneliness could predict depression through social network use to GPIU, and (e) loneliness could not predict depression through internet gaming disorder to social network use to GPIU. These results provided significant implications for the prevention and reduction of depression in Chinese junior high school students.

    Abstract: This study aims to investigate the potential vestibular pathway impairment through vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) and to explore the pathophysiological significance of these instrument-based findings in children with recurrent vertigo. Materials and methods The clinical data of 21 children (mean age 4.67 ± 1.39 years) diagnosed as RVC who met the inclusion criteria of the Bárány Society and 29 healthy children (mean age 4.83 ± 1.34 years) enrolled as the control group from February 2021 to December 2021 were collected and analyzed retrospectively. All the subjects underwent both cervical VEMP (cVEMP) and ocular VEMP (oVEMP) triggered by air-conducted sound (ACS) and galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS), respectively. The elicit rate, latency, and amplitude asymmetry ratio (AAR) of ACS-cVEMP, ACS-oVEMP, GVS-cVEMP, and GVS-oVEMP were analyzed. Results (1) The elicit rates of ACS-cVEMP and ACS-oVEMP were similar in the two groups ( P & gt; 0.05), as well as GVS-cVEMP and GVS-oVEMP ( P & gt; 0.05). (2) P1 and N1 latencies of ACS-cVEMP and GVS-cVEMP in the RVC group were longer than those in the control group ( P & lt; 0.05). (3) The N1 latency of ACS-oVEMP in the RVC group was shorter than that in the control group ( P & lt; 0.05), while there was no significant difference in the P1 latency of ACS-oVEMP ( P & gt; 0.05). The N1 and P1 latencies of GVS-oVEMP were not significantly different ( P & gt; 0.05). (4) There was no statistical difference in the AAR of ACS-cVEMP and GVS-cVEMP. Although there was an increased AAR of ACS-oVEMP in the RVC group ( P & lt; 0.05), the AAR was within the normal range. However, no statistical difference was found in the AAR of GVS-oVEMP in the two groups ( P & gt; 0.05). Conclusion The latencies of ACS-cVEMP and GVS-cVEMP in children with recurrent vertigo were significantly prolonged compared with those in healthy children, and there was no difference in elicit rates of ACS-cVEMP and GVS-cVEMP, suggesting that there might be potential impairment in the inferior vestibular nerve and the subsequent nerve conduction pathway in RVC.

    Abstract: Tranexamic acid (TXA) has been used in posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) and reduces blood loss. However, it has not been reported whether it will continue to affect postoperative red blood cells (RBC), hemoglobin (HB), hematocrit (HCT), C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). The purpose of this study was to observed the above indicators at different time after PLIF with unit dose intravenous (iv) TXA. Methods The data of 44 patients treated by single-segment PLIF from 2020.11 to 2022.3 were retrospectively analyzed. Observation group was given a unit dose of ivTXA (1 g/100 mL) 15 min before skin incision after general anesthesia. Patients without TXA were recorded as control group. Main observation indicators include RBC, HB, HCT, CRP and ESR on the 1st, 4th, 7th and last tested day after surgery. Secondary observation indicators include postoperative activated partial thrombin time (APTT), prothrombin time (PT), thrombin time (TT), and fibrinogen (FIB); and operation time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative drainage volume, incision healing, postoperative deep vein thrombosis and postoperative hospital stay. Results The operation was successfully completed without related complications. At term of main observation indicators, RBC, HB and HCT remained relatively stable, while CRP and ESR fluctuated to some extent after PLIF. The RBC, HB and HCT in the observation group were higher than those in the control group with statistically significant ( p   & lt; 0.05). Except the CRP of 7th postoperative day of the observation group was significantly lower than that of the control group ( p   & lt; 0.05), there was no difference in other CRP and ESR between the two groups ( p   & gt; 0.05). At term of secondary observation indicators, the intraoperative blood loss and postoperative drainage volume of the observation group were lower than those of the control group with statistically significant ( p   & lt; 0.05). There was no significant difference in postoperative APTT, PT, TT, FIB, and operation time and postoperative hospital stay between the two groups ( p   & gt; 0.05). Conclusion The application of unit dose of ivTXA in PLIF can safely and effectively reduce blood loss. Meanwhile, it can also maintain higher RBC, HB, HCT levels without disturbing CRP and ESR levels after surgery.

    Abstract: With the continuous infusion of renewable energy sources, smart buildings have evolved from single-load characteristics into dual characteristics with both electric energy production and consumption capability. Concurrently, the peak and off-peak periods of electricity consumption are influenced by climatic factors, which leads to complexity and deviation from the time-of-use tariffs set by electricity markets, which consequently result in a loss of revenue from grid-based electricity sales. Thus, adopting an innovative pricing mechanism to offset the revenue deficit in the grid assumes paramount significance. Built upon a dual-layer framework that employs intelligent optimization algorithms, this study proposes a pricing strategy for introducing the retail electricity provider into smart building clusters with peer-to-peer power sharing as the core. First, the independent operation model of intelligent buildings and electric energy sharing model without the participation of retail power suppliers are respectively established. Subsequently, with the aim to minimize alliance costs, a novel energy sharing pricing model involving retail electricity suppliers is developed, and a combination of particle swarm optimization and alternating direction multiplier methods is used for distributed solutions within a representative model. This approach yields optimal energy sharing transaction volumes and pricing while ensuring the confidentiality of each participating entity. Lastly, from the perspectives of the power grid, retail electricity suppliers, and multi-building smart alliances, this study conducts simulation analyses of key parameters that influence the bargaining effectiveness of retail electricity suppliers. These parameters encompass the upper limit of pricing, market supervision coefficient, and discount coefficient associated with the grid-based electricity sales to suppliers. Through these analyses, the study further validates the efficacy of the proposed strategy.

    Abstract: Natural abundance of the stable isotope (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) in plants is widely used to indicate water use efficiency (WUE). However, soil water and texture properties may affect this relationship, which remains largely elusive. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate δ 13 C as affected by different combinations of alternate wetting and drying irrigation (AWD) with varied soil clay contents in different organs and whole plant and assess the feasibility of using δ 13 C and δ 15 N as a physiological indicator of whole-plant water use efficiency (WUE whole-plant ). Three AWD regimes, I 100 (30 mm flooded when soil reached 100% saturation), I 90 (30 mm flooded when reached 90% saturation) and I 70 (30 mm flooded when reached 70% saturation) and three soil clay contents, 40% (S 40 ), 50% (S 50 ), and 60% (S 60 ), were included. Observed variations in WUE whole-plant did not conform to theoretical expectations of the organs δ 13 C (δ 13 C organs ) of plant biomass based on pooled data from all treatments. However, a positive relationship between δ 13 C leaf and WUE ET (dry biomass/evapotranspiration) was observed under I 90 regime, whereas there were no significant relationships between δ 13 C organs and WUE ET under I 100 or I 70 regimes. Under I 100 , weak relationships between δ 13 C organs and WUE ET could be explained by (i) variation in C allocation patterns under different clay content, and (ii) relatively higher rate of panicle water loss, which was independent of stomatal regulation and photosynthesis. Under I 70 , weak relationships between δ 13 C organs and WUE ET could be ascribed to (i) bigger cracks induced by water-limited irrigation regime and high clay content soil, and (ii) damage caused by severe drought. In addition, a negative relationship was observed between WUE whole-plant and shoot δ 15 N (δ 15 N shoot ) across the three irrigation treatments, indicating that WUE whole-plant is tightly associated with N metabolism and N isotope discrimination in rice. Therefore, δ 13 C should be used cautiously as an indicator of rice WUE whole-plant at different AWD regimes with high clay content, whereas δ 15 N could be considered an effective indicator of WUE whole-plant .

    Abstract: The present study aimed to investigate the status of vestibular function in children with vestibular migraine of childhood (VMC) reflected by vestibular function test battery and explore the pathophysiological implication of these instrument-based findings. Methods The clinical data of 22 children (mean age 10.7 ± 2.9 years) with VMC who met the diagnostic criteria of the Barany Society were collected from September 2021 to March 2022. A vestibular function test battery on these children included a caloric test, video head impulse test (vHIT), cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP), and ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP); these parameters were triggered by air-conducted sound (ACS) and galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS). The subjects were further divided into two groups: & lt;3 months and & gt;3 months according to the disease duration from symptom onset. The functional abnormalities and their characteristics reflected by the vestibular test battery, as well as the outcomes in children with or without aura, were analyzed. Results (1) The abnormal rate of the caloric test was 15.8% and that of vHIT was 0%. The response rates of ACS-cVEMP and ACS-oVEMP were 100% and 90.5%, respectively. The response rates of GVS-cVEMP and GVS-oVEMP were 100% and 88.9%, respectively. (2) No statistical difference was observed in the abnormal rate of the caloric test ( P = 0.55) and the response rate of ACS-oVEMP ( P = 0.21) between the two groups, irrespective of the course duration. (3) No statistical difference was detected in the abnormal rate of the caloric test ( P = 0.53) and the response rate of ACS-oVEMP ( P = 1.00) in children with or without aura. Conclusion Vestibular function status comprehensively reported by the vestibular test battery did not show an aggravation with the disease duration in children with VMC. Also, it was not affected by the existence of aura in children with VMC. The high abnormal rates of the caloric test and oVEMPs (ACS-oVEMP and GVS-oVEMP) suggested that the lateral semicircular canal (low-frequency function component), the utricle, and the superior vestibular conduction pathway might be involved in VMC.
