Abstract: By systematic sampling (including the drilling of orientated cores) new data are presented on the chemistry, petrography, mineralogy, K/Ar isotopic age and remanent magnetism of the Wolf Rock, Cornwall. The overall homogeneity of the Rock is confirmed as a fine-grained fluxioned microporphyritic phonolite. Major joints strike NNW–SSE and NNE–SSW and there is a pronounced floor jointing. New whole-rock and probe analyses of the constituent minerals are given. Nosean, previously recorded, is found to be replaced by analcime, cancrinite and other minerals. K–Ar determinations on nepheline and K-feldspar give mean ages of 112±2, and 130±6 Ma respectively. The mean pole position of 70° N, 6° E, suggests that the 130 Ma pole for stable Europe may have been somewhat closer to Europe than previously supposed. The significance of this Lower Cretaceous magmatism in the context of Mesozoic volcanism in Southern England and European alkaline provinces is discussed.

Abstract: A boulder of plutonic igneous rock, petrologically perhaps best termed a trondhjemite, which occurs as an isolated megaclast in slumped mudstones of the Singa Formation (mainly Carboniferous) at Pulau Tepor off NW Malaya, has been dated by the potassium–argon method. Two feldspar fractions, thought to represent alkali feldspar and plagioclase (though both are highly sodic) yield ages of 1029±15 Ma and 575±10 Ma, respectively, while a whole-rock sample yields an age of 264±4 Ma. The highest age is taken to give a minimum age for the rock, and the lower ages to indicate differential argon loss. This is the first radiometrically proved Precambrian rock from the Malay Peninsula, and tends to reinforce earlier inferences of a Precambrian continent as a source area for Palaeozoic sediments in the region.

Abstract: The antipathetic relation between chloritoid and biotite in the lower metamorphic grades of the Barrovian zones and the genesis of the index minerals in the higher metamorphic grades are briefly discussed. The observed mineral assemblages of 13 new analyses of peltic schists are compared with the assemblage required by the mineralogical phase rule; good agreement exists provided allowance is made for magnesia acting as a separate component. Six new biotite analyses covering all of the Barrovian zones show an increase in the degree of replacement of Si**** by Al*** with increase in metamorphic grade. The ratio of FeO: MgO varies according to the associated ferromagnesian minerals and shows no regular relation to metamorphic grade.

Abstract: Linked administrative population data were used to estimate the burden of childhood respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) hospitalization in an Australian cohort aged 〈 5 years. RSV-coded hospitalizations data were extracted for all children aged 〈 5 years born in New South Wales (NSW), Australia between 2001 and 2010. Incidence was calculated as the total number of new episodes of RSV hospitalization divided by the child-years at risk. Mean cost per episode of RSV hospitalization was estimated using public hospital cost weights. The cohort comprised of 870 314 children. The population-based incidence/1000 child-years of RSV hospitalization for children aged 〈 5 years was 4·9 with a rate of 25·6 in children aged 〈 3 months. The incidence of RSV hospitalization (per 1000 child-years) was 11·0 for Indigenous children, 81·5 for children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), 10·2 for preterm children with gestational age (GA) 32–36 weeks, 27·0 for children with GA 28–31 weeks, 39·0 for children with GA 〈 28 weeks and 6·7 for term children with low birthweight. RSV hospitalization was associated with an average annual cost of more than AUD 9 million in NSW. RSV was associated with a substantial burden of childhood hospitalization specifically in children aged 〈 3 months and in Indigenous children and children born preterm or with BPD.

Abstract: Objective: Pseudoaneurysms of the facial artery are an extremely rare development after blunt trauma. This paper aims to demonstrate the challenges faced during the diagnosis and subsequent management of this unusual cause of neck swelling. Method: We report the presentation, examination, investigation, management and potential complications of a case of facial artery pseudoaneurysm secondary to blunt arterial trauma, sustained from the string of a flying kite. We also review some of the relevant literature on this subject. Conclusions: Although a traumatic pseudoaneurysm is a rare occurrence in the facial region, the inclusion of this lesion in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue lesions caused by blunt trauma is important if the serious consequences of haemorrhage or thromboembolic disease are to be avoided. Prompt access to radiological imaging, and multi-disciplinary team input, are essential for effective diagnosis and management.
