Abstract: A RANDOM sample of over 4,000 residents of Cardiff were questioned about their lifestyle and attitudes to health. Comparisons between the younger and older age groups showed that older people drank less alcohol and smoked fewer cigarettes than younger people, but that they took less exercise and ate fewer foods of the kind associated with a healthy diet. Com parisons between the Cardiff survey and others reveal similar findings. There is a marked variation in the response of older people to different issues, pos sibly due to financial pressures. Older people were much closer to younger people in their knowledge of lifestyle issues than in their habits. Measures of the effectiveness of recent prevention strategies suggest that older people, as well as being interested in improving their health, will respond with changing their habits. Most importantly, they may experience enhanced well-being, if carefully targeted and treated as partners in the education process, rather than being simply recipients.

Abstract: Results are reported for 3 groups of healthy male probands, 318 in each group, matched for age and personality type on the Personality-Stress Questionnaire. One group was actively engaged in sports, one had discontinued former sporting activities, and one group had never taken part in regular sports. Follow-up after 13 yr. showed lowest mortality in those actively engaged in sport, highest mortality in those who had given up sport, with those who had never been engaged in sport intermediate. Prophylactic behaviour therapy was shown to reduce mortality of those who had given up sport to a significant extent but not to affect degree of retinal sclerosis.

Abstract: Replication is not common in the economics literature. No replications were found in a sampling of 1,698 papers from three major economics journals. Only 5.4 percent were replications with extensions, and they accounted for only four percent of journal space devoted to research reports. The replications with extensions generally produced results that conflicted with the original works. Of the 92 extensions published, 65.2 percent conflicted with the earlier results, and only 20 percent provided full confirmation.

Abstract: A double-blind, crossover study was carried out on the antihypertensive effect of 5 mg ramipril. Continuous 24-h blood pressure monitoring was performed on 15 essential hypertensives [mean (± SD) blood pressure 155.2 ± 6.5/101.3 ± 4.8 mmHg] , 24 h prior to treatment and 48 h after having received either antihypertensive therapy or placebo; the patients taking part in the study had not taken any antihypertensive treatment 4 weeks prior to the beginning of the trial. After receiving 5 mg ramipril the mean 24-h blood pressure was significantly ( P 〈 0.05) reduced to 148.3 ± 5.8/91.5 ± 5.5 mmHg. After 48 h the blood pressure increased to 153.1 ± 4.8/96.0 ± 6.4 mmHg. In the placebo group there was only a slight, non-significant reduction in blood pressure on day 1 (154.3 ± 6.9/97.3 ± 5.7 mmHg) and during day 2 the blood pressure increased to 155.4 ± 5.3/99.5 ± 5.9 mmHg. The results showed that a once-daily administration of 5 mg ramipril produced a reduction in blood pressure, which lasted 24 h. This simple therapeutic regime offers the advantage of being easy for patients to follow and, therefore, promotes compliance with therapy.

Abstract: Because of the widespread prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and the important role of drug therapy in its management, there is significant opportunity for the pharmacist to interact with COPD patients. Whether educating patients or other health care providers about COPD, a knowledge of the treatment options and their correct application in these patients is essential for pharmacists today. This article reviews the pharmacological management of ambulatory COPD patients, including the roles of β-agonists, anticholinergics, theophylline, steroids, oxygen, and other treatment modalities. Abstract: The effect of partial (50 mI/min/kg) left heart bypass (LHBP) on renal function, plasma renin activity (PRA), aldosterone, arginine vasopressin and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) response was studied in ten anesthetized, open-chested mongrel dogs (weight 23-50 kg) over a period of 6 h. Standard equipment with systemic heparinization (control), initially 300 IU/kg, was employed in five dogs, and heparin-coated equipment without additional heparin in the other five (heparin coated). Urine was continuously collected through a transurethral catheter. Urine samples and pulmonary artery blood samples for hormonal assays were taken at preset intervals before and during LHBP. The results in each group were summarized as median (25th-75th) and compared using the Mann-Whitney U test. In the control group higher blood loss required higher volume substitution. Urine output was maintained in heparin coated and slightly decreased at 3-4 h in control LHBP. Creatinine clearance at 3-5 h and free-water clearance at 3-6 h were significantly higher with heparin-coated LHBP. PRA, aldosterone and vasopressin peaked at 1-2 h of LHBP similarly in both groups, not exceeding the values before perfusion. PRA and aldosterone response was sustained during 6 h and the percentage changes corrected for hemodilution indicated a stronger response with standard equipment. Vasopressin concentrations were slightly but significantly higher in the control group at 1 and 6 h of perfusion. Corrected for hemodilution, vasopressin percentage changes were not different in the two groups. ANP, despite atrial unloading, rose similarly in both groups. There was a tendency to poorly sustained ANP response (control 〉 heparin-coated) after 6 h of perfusion. In conclusion, preserved renal function and attenuated hormonal response during canine partial LHBP are results of better hemostasis and circulatory integrity of perfusion without systemic heparinization.
