Abstract: CVC is considered the most important disease of brazilian citrus industry but many aspects of its epidemiology are still unknown. This work aimed to characterize the spatial pattern of CVC affected trees in three regions (Northwest, Center and South) of São Paulo state, Brazil. Three orchards of Pêra sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) grafted on Rangpur lime (Citrus limonia) were evaluated twice a month by visual assessments from July 1998 to December 2000. For each evaluation all plants were inspected and assigned as diseased or healthy and cumulative maps were produced. The following analyses were performed: ordinary runs, isopath areas, Taylor law, dispersion index and foci structure and dynamics analysis. Ordinary runs indicated a trend to randomness. Isopath areas analysis showed few compact foci and a trend to uniform incidence in all areas. The other analysis showed few if any differences between regions and results that could classify CVC pattern as slightly aggregated.

Abstract: This work was to characterize the evolution of Citrus variegated chlorosis (CVC) related variables in plants of three regions in the State of São Paulo (Northeast, Center and South), in order to demonstrate differences in seasonal pattern of the pathogen, Xylella fastidiosa, vectors (sharpshooters), host [sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) 'Pera' grafted on Rangpur lime (Citrus limonia)] and disease. Twenty symptomatic plants were evaluated monthly from December 1998 to December 2000. The following variables were measured: number of new flushes (nf), percentage of symptomatic branches (psb), percentage of infected assymptomatic branches (piab), percentage of infected branches (pib), estimation of bacteria concentration (ebc), lower and higher temperatures, rain fall and number of sharpshooters in yellow traps. The correlations among variables were tested by Distributed Lag Analysis and the comparison between regions and season was performed by Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman ANOVA and Nemenyi test (p 〈 0,005). The CVC related variables (psb, piab, pib and ebc) showed seasonal patterns but no statistical differences were detected among seasons. The Northeast orchard showed the highest number of new flushes and percentage of symptomatic branches. The South orchard had the higher percentage of assymptomatic infected branches. There were no statistical differences among regions regarding the concentration of Xylella.

Abstract: The main objective of this work was to evaluate two methods of determination of soil available water (a direct method and other in laboratory) and the effect of three levels of available water (10, 25 and 40%) in cotton crop (Gossypium hirsutum L. r. latifolium Hutch). This work was developed in green house condition in the Departamento de Solos e Engenharia Rural/Centro de Ciências Agrárias/Universidade Federal da Paraíba, located in Areia, PB, Brazil. A completely randomized block was utilized in a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement, with three replications. The variance analysis showed that the values of the available water in soil using the direct method were significantly (p 〈 = 0.05) bigger than the lab method. The management of irrigation in the cotton crop using 40% of available water determinated through the direct method showed the better results of evapotranspiration, leaf area, aboveground biomass. There was interaction of methods x levels of available water for all variables studied.

Abstract: To assess the tolerance of 50 cowpea genotypes under salinity, experiments were conducted in greenhouse covered with fiberglass sheets. The salinity treatments applied in terms of electrical conductivity of saturation extract of soil (EC) were EC1 - 0.3; EC2 - 3.0; EC3 - 6.0; EC4 - 9.0 and EC5 - 12.0 dS m-1. The genotypes were classified for the salinity tolerance on the basis of the reduction in dry weight (%) of shoot. Under EC2, 36 genotypes were tolerant (T), 12 moderately tolerant (MT) and 2 moderately susceptible (MS); under EC3, 3 were T, 14 MT, 30 MS and 3 susceptible (S); under EC4, one was MS and 49 S and under EC5, all were S. The protein content of seed was influenced by salinity and varied with the genotype.

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the influence of environmental factors on milk production from dairy goats raised in the Brazilian Southeast and to estimate genetic parameters for this trait through least squares. The data originated from seven farms and three breeds (Alpine Brown, Saanen and Toggenburg). Milk yields obtained from 1,336 lactations were initially fitted to a diphasic function, whereby total milk production (TMP) was estimated. The overall mean and standard error for TMP were 635.31±39.75 kg. A significant year x kidding season interaction was observed. In all three kidding seasons a quadratic yearly trend of PLT was observed: it increased from 1986 until mid-1990, decreasing thereafter. Age of maximum PLT was estimated as 46.65 months. Alpine Brown was superior to Saanen in some farms, the opposite occurring in others, but both showed higher PLT values than Toggenburg. Estimated heritability and repeatability coefficients were 0.296±0.079 and 0.227±0.033, respectively. These results show low reliability due to the small number of observations or to inconsistent PLT estimates obtained through the biphasic function. Since PLT is a sex-limited trait, it is suggested the use of progeny tests as the most efficient selection method for bucks and artificial insemination for spreading the selected genetic material.
