Abstract: A trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of reduced CP, amino acid-supplemented diets on performance of castrated males swines on high environmental temperature (32ºC). A total of sixty crossbred piglets (Landrace x Large White) averaging initial weight of 15.2 kg was allotted to completely randomized experimental design with five treatments (18, 17, 16, 15, and 14% of CP), six replications and two animals per experimental unit. The experimental diets were fed to swine ad libitum until the end of the experiment, when the animals averaged 29.9 kg. The average temperature in the room was maintained in 32.3ºC, with relative humidity of 75.9%, corresponding a black globe-humidity index (BGHI) of 82.6. The reduced CP level, amino acid-supplemented-based diets did not affect the evaluated parameters (feed intake, weight gain and feed:gain ratio). No treatment effect on digestible lysine and energy intakes was observed. Gradual reduction on daily nitrogen intake was observed. Decreasing dietary CP levels affected only fat deposition rate. The highest values of relative and absolute weights of liver and stomach and the relative weight of kidneys were observed in the animals fed diets with the highest dietary CP level. It was concluded that the dietary CP level can be reduced from 18 to 14% for castrated piglets from 15 to 30 kg on high environmental temperature, with no effect on performance, since diets are supplemented with the essential amino acids.

Abstract: ABSTRACT The tribe Bignonieae represents eighty-five percent of Bignoniaceae in Brazil, which are predominantly lianas, although some genera also have a few suffruticose species. At the Parque Estadual do Rio Doce (PERD), one of the last Atlantic Forest stretches in the state of Minas Gerais, 37 species of that tribe were recorded. The main purposes of the present study were: to describe the PERD's Bignonieae species vertical distribution and to recognise the flowering phenological patterns displayed by them; and associating corolla morphological patterns and established floral syndromes with those found at PERD. All thirty-seven species were observed on 32 visits during 15 months. Vertical distribution occurred in three strata: canopy (75.7%), intra-crown (16.2%) and under-storey (8.1%), meaning that 24.3% of those species spread out to other ecological niches, besides the forest's higher stratum. The flowering phenological patterns were: big bang in 40.6% of the species, multiple bang in 21.6%, modified steady state in 16.2% and cornucopia in 13.5%. The Anemopaegma corolla type was the most representative (44.1% of the studied species), followed by the types Stizophyllum and Cydista (14.7%, each), Pithecoctenium and Pyrostegia (11.8%, each) and Tynnanthus (2.9%). Associating the floral morphology to a possible pollinator it was found that 83.8% of the species display floral types associated to bee-pollination, highlighting the importance of the Bignonieae on the maintenance of the large and middle sized bees in tropical forests.

Abstract: The objective of this trial was to evaluate performance, thermal comfort and behavior of crossbred Holstein x Zebu dairy calves kept in different housing systems during the dry season (26/04/2002 to 30/08/2002). Twenty-four calves were raised from birth to 70 days of age in one of the following housing systems: (1 - hutches; 2 - shadecloth; or 3 - with no shelter. Calves raised with no shelter showed higher rectal temperatures and respiratory rates in the afternoon. It was also observed that calves spend most of the time outside the hutches. There were no differences among housing systems for behavior measurements as well as for body weight, average daily weight gain, starter intake, and feed efficiency. In all three housing systems calves used their latent heat loss mechanisms by increasing respiratory rates above normal range in the afternoon. Calves raised with no shelter showed increased rectal temperatures and respiratory rates and were not able to maintain these variables within normal physiological range. No significant differences in calf performance were observed across the three housing systems in the present study.

Abstract: This trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of the environmental temperature on performance, carcass composition and physiological parameters of swine from 15 to 30 kg. Thirty-six barrow (Landrace x Large White) averaging initial weight of 14.97 + 0.56 kg were assigned to a completely randomized experimental design with three treatments and six replicates of two animals. The experimental period lasted 23 days. The treatments were as follows: T1 animals on heat stress (35ºC) fed ad libitum; T2 animals on thermal comfort (22ºC) fed ad libitum; T3 animals on thermal comfort (22ºC), pair feeding with treatment 1. Decreasing effects of treatments 1 and 3 feed intake, weight gain, carcass yield and decrease on feed:gain ratio were observed. It was also observed decrease on daily protein and fat depositions in carcass of the animals of treatments 1 and 3 compared of those in the treatment 2. No effects of treatments on relative weights of evaluated organs were observed, except for the relative weight of kidney and stomach that were smaller in the animals of treatment 1 than those of treatment 2. The physiological parameters (rectal temperature, surface temperature and respiratory rate) were negatively influenced by high temperature (treatment 1). It was concluded that in the initial phase the environmental temperature by decreasing feed intake, reduce the weight gain, feed:gain ratio, and protein deposition and increase the respiratory rate and rectal temperature of swine.

Abstract: This text discusses some professional practices carried out in the field of higher education in a context of curriculum changes in the medical and nursing courses of a public university (Universidade Federal Fluminense - UFF - in Niterói, RJ, Brazil) and in the nutrition course of a private university (Universidade Metodista - UNIMEP - in Piracicaba, sp, Brazil). Based on concepts from institutional analysis, we investigate similarities and differences between the public and private processes of curriculum reform, as well as aspects of our own professional histories. This paper was produced in the context of disciplines and seminars in institutional analysis for the Graduate Program in Collective Health at the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine of the School of Medical Sciences at UNICAMP, conducted between 2002 and 2004 under the responsibility of the last-mentioned co-author of this article.

Abstract: Several pathogens can affect the quality of soybean seeds. With the objective of evaluating the transport of fungi through seeds from soy-bean plants artificially inoculated in field conditions, with two isolates of C. dematium var. truncata and one isolate of P. sojae and their effects on the sanitary and physiologic quality of seeds, four soybean varieties (BRS 133, MSoy 6101, Conquista and Liderança) were sowed in field. Each block was inoculated with C. dematium var. truncata isolate 1 and isolate 2, P. sojae, and a block without inoculation (control). The seeds were manually harvested and were submitted to the Blotter test, initial water content, 100 seeds weight, germination in roll paper and emergence in sand. The seeds presented a high infection for Fusarium spp.. Phomopsis sojae was found in all the treatments, and its incidence was related with the incidence of Fusarium sp. in seeds. There were differences in pathogenicity among isolates of C. dematium var. truncata, being the isolate 1 the most pathogenic one, specially for the variety Liderança (25% of infection for C. dematium var. truncata). Fusarium sp. influenced negatively the germination of variety MSoy 6101, independently of treatment, and C. dematium var. truncata affected negatively the germination of varieties Conquista and Liderança. The values of germination in sand were significantly higher than germination in paper, for the varieties MSoy 6101, Conquista and Liderança.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To identify the difficulties of children with diabetes mellitus type 1 in their family and social daily life, focusing on aspects related to feeding and treatment. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed with a semi-structured questionnaire applied to parents and children with diabetes mellitus type 1 at the Diabetes Clinic of the São José do Rio Preto Medical, São Paulo, Brazil. The interview of 13 children included questions regarding demographic data and difficulties related to the control of the disease. RESULTS: The following characteristics were found among the studied children: female gender in 77%, age between eight and 12 years in 77%, white race in 77%, catholics in 61% and presence of family history of diabetes in 54%. Regarding the disease control, the following difficulties were mentioned: special food cost, fear of the unknown, need for quick learning about the disease and shame of having diabetes. Out of 13 children, 23% were learning how to apply insulin and 46% followed the diet prescription at the time of the interview. In 69% of cases, the mother was the closest relative that has helped the child to manage the treatment. Hyperglycemia was present in 62% of the children, and it was detected only after capillary glycemia test. CONCLUSIONS: The present study points out the importance of campaigns to guide parents about the disease control, about factors associated with the development of the disease and the need for identifying the hyperglycemia symptoms in order to minimize future complications of the diabetes.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, using tuberculin skin test, among community health agents (CHAs) monitoring TB patients in the city of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Brazil. METHODS: We included 30 CHAs acting in the Family Health Program and 30 of their family members residing in the same household. The tuberculin skin test results of each CHA were compared with those of the corresponding family member. RESULTS: Of the 30 CHAs, 27 (90.0%) were female, compared with 23 (76.7%) of the 30 family members (p = 0.299). The mean age of the CHA group and of the family member group was, respectively, 36.8 and 39.7 years. No statistically significant difference was found between the groups regarding the level of education. Regarding M. tuberculosis exposure, the same number of participants in the two groups reported having known or had contact with a TB patient (17 individuals; 56.7%). There was a statistically significant difference regarding positive tuberculin skin test results (26.7% in the CHA groupand 3.3% in the family member group; p = 0,011). CONCLUSIONS: M. tuberculosis infection was significantly higher among CHAs than among their family members, fueling the debate on the occupational risk involved in the activities of these professionals.

Abstract: Seeds infected by pathogens in the field can have their health altered during storage, through viability loss. The objective of the present study was to verify the effect of storage of soybean seeds in their health quality, inoculated with pathogens in field conditions. The soybean BRS 133, MSoy 6101, Conquista and Liderança varieties were inoculated, in the field, by pulverization with a spore suspension of two isolates of Colletotrichum dematium var. truncata and Phomopsis sojae. After harvest, seed health tests were carried out, without and with surface disinfection of the seeds with sodium hypochlorite at 1% for 3 min. After this analysis, the seeds were stored in a cold chamber for six months, and seed health tests were newly performed. The results of the work allow concluding that the storage of the seeds in cold chamber, for a period of six months, reduced the incidence of the pathogens Phmopsis sojae and Colletotricum dematium var. truncata in the seeds.
