Abstract: Abstract The aim of this article is to help us to learn and recognize the factors that determine quality practical training. The research focused on student satisfaction and perceived usefulness during the training period and students’ opinion of the assessment of the subject. The relation between variables such as the type of school or the students’ initial expectations regarding the process was also studied. The study employs a qualitative approach, with a pre-experimental research design using pre-test and post-test. Data analysis was descriptive and inferential, examining the relations between the different dimensions and the influence or not of certain factors. It was confirmed that students’ general satisfaction with this training period was very high, and it can be highlighted that the most satisfied students were also the ones who found the practical training to be most useful for their education. It was also observed that the school they were assigned to considerably influenced student satisfaction. The findings obtained will allow us to make decisions that help to improve practical training.

Abstract: In 1978 Christopher T. Russell and Richard C. Elphic detected magnetic flux tubes in magnetosphere boundary region through observational data obtained from the satellites ISEE-1 and −2, which were named flux transfer events (FTE). The solar wind together with the interplanetary magnetic field, both originated in the Sun, reach the earth magnetic field region, producing the magnetic reconnection and the flux tubes phenomena. This paper presents an introduction on the Sun-Earth connection and the magnetic reconnection process, and mainly the basic concepts on the tubes generation and formation. The models which describe the type of reconnection and the tubes signatures, for example, Russell-Elphic, Lee-Fu, Southwood-Scholer, and the FTE event characteristics, are presented in a clear and concise way. Finally, this paper brings an example of the tubes identification in computing simulation, performed in this work.

Abstract: Abstract Information systems are critical to the management of biological collections of research institutions in biodiversity, since they have been making significant investments in the computerization process and digitization of their collections. Systems of herbarium and botanical gardens databases have evolved to provide online data from herbarium specimens and related collections, in addition to your images. In this paper is presented the new version of Jabot, the botanical collections management system developed at the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro. The system now reflects the knowledge acquired by a multidisciplinary team of botanists and computer professionals, in a decade of intensive use in the management of digital content and curator of the herbarium.

Abstract: Abstract The feasibility of producing blocks and boards through the agglomeration of cotton ginnig process waste with calcium binders was proven in previous studies. This waste represents a serious problem for ginning plants, which annually produce a high amount of waste without final destination, as is the case in Argentina. The variability of the annual cotton production, geographical dispersion of ginners and transportation costs make it difficult to propose high-complexity recycling alternatives. This study proposes that that waste is used as a raw material to manufacture composites made of cotton gin waste and portland cement, using simple, easily appropriable and transferable technologies. This paper analyses the characteristics of the composites obtained and the influence that different production parameters have on them and on the productivity of the process. The results achieved show an improvement of the process productivity by using industrial grade additives, as well as better hygrothermal behavior of housing envelopes due to the incorporation of these composites, replacing high cost materials and complex construction technologies.

Abstract: Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate superficial diagnostic horizons and to quantify δ13C in Inceptisol profiles on the highlands of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, as well as to propose the complementary use of this attribute in the Brazilian System of Soil Classification (SiBCS). Samples of superficial horizons were collected to characterize physical and chemical attributes of 24 modal profiles. For the evaluation of δ13C, the samples were taken at the layers of 0.0-0.10, 0.10-0.20, 0.20-0.30, 0.30-0.40, 0.40-0.50, 0.50-0.60, 0.60-0.80, and 0.80-1.00 m. Haplic Inceptisols with moderate A superficial diagnostic horizon and high total organic carbon (TOC) content predominated. The high TOC values, however, were often not enough to classify the superficial horizon as humic A, due to its small thickness. In soils with humic A, δ13C values revealed little alteration in the isotopic signature, which indicates vegetation maintenance; whereas in the soils with moderate A, alterations occurred due to cultivation. The use of δ13C to complement the SiBCS is suggested, and depth should be disregarded for classification in the case of: changes in land use in areas with slopes above 8%, shallow or small-depth soils, clayey to very clayey texture, and TOC contents above 3%.

Abstract: ABSTRACT Conversions of plant cover resulting from management practices may alter carbon storage and the natural abundance of 13C. The aim of this study was to evaluate C stocks and natural abundance of C (δ13C) in areas of forest (F) and pasture (P) sequences with different times of usage in an Atlantic Forest area, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Seven usage sequences of forest (F) and pasture (P) were defined through aerial photographs taken in 1957, 1978, and 2008; through interviews with residents; and through choice of areas with forests in an intermediate stage of regeneration. The sequences were identified as FFP, FPF, FFP, FPP, PFF, PPF, and PPF; in which the letters F or P refer to the usage observed in the years 1957, 1978, and 2008, respectively. Soil was sampled at the depths of 0.00-0.10, 0.10-0.20, 0.20-0.30, 0.30-0.40, 0.40-0.50, 0.50-0.60, 0.60-0.80, and 0.80-1.00 m. Natural abundance of soil 13C (δ13C), total organic carbon (TOC), bulk density (BD), and carbon stock (CST) were quantified. Conversion of forest to pasture led to an increase in BD and reduction in TOC and CST in the soil. The highest CST value was observed in areas currently occupied by forest, even when previously used as pasture. The TOC in the areas with secondary forest showed a tendency toward new equilibrium, since TOC values were higher than those observed in primary forest areas. The forest and pasture areas showed variation in the isotopic signatures of δ13C in the different land use times and soil depths, confirming the shift in cultivation from C3 to C4 plants. In pasture areas with 50 years of use, at the 0.00-0.10 m depth, 66 % of soil TOC is still derived from the original forest. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that TOC was the property that best discriminated the changes related to land use in the different soil depths.
