Abstract: Nowadays, microfluidics is attracting more and more attentions in the biological society and has provided powerful solutions for various applications. This paper reported a microfluidic strategy for aqueous sample sterilization. A well-designed small microchannel with a high hydrodynamic resistance was used to function as an in-chip pressure regulator. The pressure in the upstream microchannel was thereby elevated which made it possible to maintain a boiling-free high temperature environment for aqueous sample sterilization. A 120 °C temperature along with a pressure of 400 kPa was successfully achieved inside the chip to sterilize aqueous samples with E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus inside. This technique will find wide applications in portable cell culturing, microsurgery in wild fields, and other related micro total analysis systems.

Abstract: Quantum dots (QDs) and Fe3O4 nanoparticles were conjugated onto the surfaces of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for medical diagnosis and treatment. The nanoassembly was designed to meet the specific needs in cancer in vivo imaging and simultaneous treatment. The key functionalities needed for clinical applications were integrated, including CNT surface functionalization for attachment of biological molecules in targeting, drug storage capabilities, fluorescent emissions near the infrared range, and magnetic hyperthermia. CNT-QD-Fe3O4 developed exhibited a strong fluorescence near the infrared region for noninvasive optical in vivo imaging. Magnetization measurements showed nearly reversible hysteresis curves from CNT-QD-Fe3O4 nanoassembly. Fe3O4 conjugated CNT was found to experience hyperthermia heating under alternating electromagnetic field.

Abstract: By using serial mutations, i.e., a residue replaced by 19 kinds of naturally occurring residues, the stability of native conformation and folding behavior of mutated sequences are studied. The 3×3×3 lattice protein model with two kinds of interaction potentials between the residues, namely the original Miyazawa and Jernigan (MJ) potentials and the modified MJ potentials (MMJ), is used. Effects of various sites in the mutated sequences on the stability and foldability are characterized through the Z-score and the folding time. It is found that the sites can be divided into three types, namely the hydrophobic-type (H-type), the hydrophilic-type (P-type) and the neutral-type (N-type). These three types of sites relate to the hydrophobic core, the hydrophilic surface and the parts between them. The stability of the native conformation for the serial mutated sequences increases (or decreases) as the increasing in the hydrophobicity of the mutated residues for the H-type sites (or the P-type sites), while varies randomly for the N-type sites. However, the foldability of the mutated sequences is not always consistent with the thermodynamic stability, and their relationship depends on the site types. Since the hydrophobic tendency of the MJ potentials is strong, the ratio between the number of the H-type sites and the number of the P-type sites is found to be 1:2. Differently, for the MJJ potentials it is found that such a ratio is about 1:1 which is relevant to that of real proteins. This suggests that the modification of the MJ potentials is rational in the aspect of thermodynamic stability. The folding of model proteins with the MMJ potentials is fast. However, the relationship between the foldability and the thermodynamic stability of the mutated sequences is complex.

Abstract: In this paper, we give a review of our theoretical and experimental progress in octahedral spherical hohlraum study. From our theoretical study, the octahedral spherical hohlraums with 6 Laser Entrance Holes (LEHs) of octahedral symmetry have robust high symmetry during the capsule implosion at hohlraum-to-capsule radius ratio larger than 3.7. In addition, the octahedral spherical hohlraums also have potential superiority on low backscattering without supplementary technology. We studied the laser arrangement and constraints of the octahedral spherical hohlraums, and gave a design on the laser arrangement for ignition octahedral hohlraums. As a result, the injection angle of laser beams of 50°–60° was proposed as the optimum candidate range for the octahedral spherical hohlraums. We proposed a novel octahedral spherical hohlraum with cylindrical LEHs and LEH shields, in order to increase the laser coupling efficiency and improve the capsule symmetry and to mitigate the influence of the wall blowoff on laser transport. We studied on the sensitivity of the octahedral spherical hohlraums to random errors and compared the sensitivity among the octahedral spherical hohlraums, the rugby hohlraums and the cylindrical hohlraums, and the results show that the octahedral spherical hohlraums are robust to these random errors while the cylindrical hohlraums are the most sensitive. Up till to now, we have carried out three experiments on the spherical hohlraum with 2 LEHs on Shenguang(SG) laser facilities, including demonstration of improving laser transport by using the cylindrical LEHs in the spherical hohlraums, spherical hohlraum energetics on the SGIII prototype laser facility, and comparisons of laser plasma instabilities between the spherical hohlraums and the cylindrical hohlraums on the SGIII laser facility.

Abstract: As Thomson scattering x-ray sources based on the collision of intense laser and relativistic electrons have drawn much attention in various scientific fields, there is an increasing demand for the effective methods to reconstruct the spectrum information of the ultra-short and high-intensity x-ray pulses. In this paper, a precise spectrum measurement method for the Thomson scattering x-ray sources was proposed with the diffraction of a Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG) crystal and was demonstrated at the Tsinghua Thomson scattering X-ray source. The x-ray pulse is diffracted by a 15 mm (L) ×15 mm (H)× 1 mm (D) HOPG crystal with 1° mosaic spread. By analyzing the diffraction pattern, both x-ray peak energies and energy spectral bandwidths at different polar angles can be reconstructed, which agree well with the theoretical value and simulation. The higher integral reflectivity of the HOPG crystal makes this method possible for single-shot measurement.

Abstract: The simple homodinuclear M-M single bonds for group II and XII elements are difficult to obtain as a result of the fulfilled s2 electronic configurations, consequently, a dicationic prototype is often utilized to design the M+ −M+ single bond. Existing studies generally use sterically bulky organic ligands L− to synthesize the compounds in the L− −M+ −M+ −L− manner. However, here we report the design of Mg-Mg and Zn-Zn single bonds in two ligandless clusters, Mg2B7− and Zn2B7−, using density functional theory methods. The global minima of both of the clusters are in the form of M22+(B73−), where the M-M single bonds are positioned above a quasi-planar hexagonal B7 moiety. Chemical bonding analyses further confirm the existence of Mg-Mg and Zn-Zn single bonds in these clusters, which are driven by the unusually stable B73− moiety that is both σ and π aromatic. Vertical detachment energies of Mg2B7− and Zn2B7− are calculated to be 2.79 eV and 2.94 eV, respectively, for the future comparisons with experimental data.

Abstract: Hydroxylapatite (HA) nanoparticles were functionalized by depositing rare-earth-doped Y2O3 nanoparticles on the surface, and the structural evolutions of both HA and Y2O3 phases at different annealing temperatures were investigated by x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Laser spectroscopy indicated that the surface functionalized HA nanoparticles exhibited strong visible emissions. No visible emissions were observed from rare-earth-doped Y2O3 without any substrate, suggesting a doping-induced environmental change of optically active rare-earth elements in the functionalized HA nanoparticles. The luminescent hydroxylapatite nanoparticles may find important applications as a biodegradable substrate for biomarking and drug delivery.

Abstract: An InAlAs native oxide is used to replace the p-n reverse-biased junction in a conventional buried heterostructure InP-based laser. This technique reduces the number of regrowth steps and eliminates leakage current under high-temperature operation. The InAlAs native oxide buried heterostructure (NOBH) laser with strain-compensated InGaAsP/InP multiple quantum well active layers has a threshold current of 5.6 mA, a slope efficiency of 0.23 mW/mA, and a linear power up to 22.5 mW with a HR-coated facet. It exhibits single transverse mode with lasing wavelength at 1.532 μm. A characteristic temperature (T0) of 50 K is obtained from the NOBH laser with a nonoptimized oxide layer width.

Abstract: Ternary Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT) single crystal was investigated for potential application in ultrasonic linear array. Orientation and temperature dependences of height extensional electromechanical coupling coefficient k′33 for PIN-PMN-PT single crystal were studied. It was found that the [001] poled PIN-PMN-PT diced along the [100] direction would achieve a maximum k′33 (∼87%) and the service temperature was up to 110 °C. Ultrasonic linear arrays using PIN-PMN-PT single crystal and PZT ceramic were fabricated and compared. The bandwidth at −6 dB, two-way insertion loss and pulse length of the PIN-PMN-PT array were 98.6%, −45.1 dB, and 0.28 μs, respectively, which were about 25% broader, 3.7dB higher, and 0.08 μs shorter than those of the PZT array. The experimental results agreed well with the theoretical simulation. These superior performances were attributable to the excellent piezoelectric properties of PIN-PMN-PT single crystal.
