Abstract:
Solanaceous self‐incompatibility ( SI ) is controlled by a polymorphic S ‐locus encoding S‐ RN ase and S ‐locus F‐box ( SLF ) proteins to control the pistil and pollen expression of SI , respectively, but it remains unclear what physical forces contribute to their specific interactions. Here we show that the electrostatic potentials of SLF s act as a major force to contribute to the pollen S specificity, providing a mechanistic insight into the self/non‐self discrimination between cytosolic proteins in angiosperms.
