Description: IJERPH, Vol. 15, Pages 487: A National County-Level Assessment of U.S. Nursing Facility Characteristics Associated with Long-Term Exposure to Traffic Pollution in Older Adults International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health doi: 10.3390/ijerph15030487 Authors: Yi Wang Hao Fan Rudy Banerjee Anne Weaver Michael Weiner Long-term exposure to ambient air pollution increases disease risk in older adults. Nursing facilities located near major roadways potentially expose older adults to traffic pollution. No studies, however, have described the association between nursing facilities and traffic pollution. We obtained data on facility- and census-tract-level characteristics of 15,706 U.S. facilities from the Medicare Nursing Home Compare datasets. We calculated distance to major roadways and traffic density for each facility. In the contiguous U.S. (as of 2014), 345,792 older adults, about 27% of residents in non-hospital facilities, lived within 150 m major roadways (A1 or A2) in 3876 (28% of sampled) facilities. Nationally, for-profit facilities, high-occupancy facilities, and facilities in census tracts with higher percentages of minorities were more likely to have higher exposure to traffic. Counties in Virginia, New York City, and Rhode Island have the highest percent of residents and facilities near major roads. Nationally, over one-quarter of sampled facilities are located near major roadways. Attributes potentially associated with higher exposure to traffic included “for-profit” and “higher minority census tract”. Proximity to major roadways may be an important factor to consider in siting nursing facilities. Our results inform potential intervention strategy at both county and facility level.

Description: The aim of the present study was to obtain the prevalence of malocclusions in preschool children in Shanghai, China. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2335 children aged 3–5 years from kindergartens. Several occlusal parameters were clinically assessed, including second deciduous molar terminal plane, canine relationship, degree of overjet and overbite, anterior and posterior crossbite, and the presence or absence of physiologic spaces and crowding. All parents of subjects were asked to fill in the oral health knowledge questionnaires. The prevalence of malocclusion in primary dentition in Shanghai was 83.9%, and no significant differences were found in genders. Data showed that the prevalence of deep overbite (63.7%) was the highest in children with malocclusion, followed by deep overjet (33.9%), midline deviation (26.6%), anterior crossbite (8.0%) and anterior crowding (6.5%). The results revealed a high prevalence of malocclusion in primary dentition in children aged 3–5 years old of Shanghai, especially in vertical anomalies. The need for preventive orthodontic therapy is extremely desired and oral health education about malocclusion should be strengthened.

Description: The parametric design macro programs of two basic types of single-layer hemi-ellipsoidal latticed shell are developed by using APDL (Ansys Parametric Design Language) parameterized design language. The parametric design of single-layer hemi-ellipsoidal latticed shell structures can be built under the condition of giving the macroscopic geometric parameters such as specifical parameter t, parameter k, span S1, span S2, rise f, valley number Kn, radial node number Nx etc. Ansys software is applied to study comparison of characteristics of the Kewitte type net shell structure of different vector height f, radial node number Nx and boundary constraints. The results show that modeling design of hemi-ellipsoidal latticed shell can be built conveniently and quickly by the application of parametric design of macro program. The three-way grid type is more reasonable force performance, and it’s mechanical performance is better when the span ratio is 1/2. Thus it is suggested to give prior...

Description: Large amounts of organic pollutants emitted from industries have accumulated and caused serious human health risks, especially in urban areas with rapid industrialization. This paper focused on the carcinogen benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) from industrial effluent and gaseous emissions, and established a multi-pathway exposure model based on a Level IV multimedia fugacity model to analyze the human health risks in a city that has undergone rapid industrialization. In this study, GIS tools combined with land-use data was introduced to analyze smaller spatial scales so as to enhance the spatial resolution of the results. An uncertainty analysis using a Monte Carlo simulation was also conducted to illustrate the rationale of the probabilistic assessment mode rather than deterministic assessment. Finally, the results of the case study in Nanjing, China indicated the annual average human cancer risk induced by local industrial emissions during 2002–2008 (lowest at 1.99´10–6 in 2008 and highest at 3.34´10–6 in 2004), which was lower than the USEPA prescriptive level (1´10–6–1´10–4) but cannot be neglected in the long term. The study results could not only instruct the BaP health risk management but also help future health risk prediction and control.

Description: To explore the reaction characteristics and mechanism of Al/MnO 2 thermite, selecting the high purity micron grade Al and MnO 2 powder, the Al/MnO 2 thermite sample was mixed by the ultrasonic dispersion method. On the basis of the study of thermal decomposition of MnO 2 powder, the thermal performance of the sample was study by simultaneous thermal analysis technique at the temperature range from room temperature to 900°C, and the reaction products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The microstructure changes of the thermite during reaction were observed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The results showed that the MnO 2 has two processes of thermal decomposition during the temperature rising, and the reaction products were Mn 2 O 3 and Mn 3 O 4 , and the onset temperature were 498.3°C and 781.5°C, the heat release were - 197.1J/g and -57.4 J/g, respectively. Description: In order to explore the thermal kinetics of nano Al-micro MnO 2 thermite system, the Al/MnO 2 thermite sample was mixed by the ultrasonic dispersion method. On the basis of the study of thermal decomposition of MnO 2 powder, the thermal performance of the sample was study by simultaneous thermal analysis technique at the temperature range from room temperature to 1000°C, which could found the thermite reaction occurred in 650-660°C before the melting of Al, which belongs to solid state reactions with the 350 J/g heat releasing. Besides, the microstructure changes of the thermite during reaction were observed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Based on the TG-DSC test with multiple heating rates and using of the activation energy calculated by Kissniger method, it could be proved the sample had good stability and safety performance.
