Abstract:
Abstract
- Background: Pressure Injury (PI) places a significant burden on geriatric patients, their families, and caregivers, resulting in a social and economic burden. Reducing the incidence of PI is an important objective of the patient safety strategy. This study aimed to determine the knowledge and practice of nurses on management of pressure injuries. - Objective: Determine the percentage of nurses who have correct knowledge and practice in the management of pressure injuries and find out the relationship between knowledge, practice and nursing characteristics.
- Material and methods: We conducted a descriptive cross - sectional study, surveying the knowledge and practice of pressure injury management of 43 nursing staffs working at Critical Care Unit and the Neurology Department of University hospital. The study used a questionnaire of 45 knowledge assessment questions and 26 practice self - assessment questions and collected individual characteristics of nurses, including age, gender, working place, professional qualifications, seniority, and the average number of pressure injuries per month.
- Results: The percentage of nurses with correct knowledge is 86.1%; correct practice is 60.5%. There was no statistically significant relationship between knowledge and practice, as well as between knowledge and practice and gender, age, work place, and seniority of nurses except for nursing qualification, p = 0.024. Nurses who take care of more PIs have higher knowledge scores, p = 0.011. - Conclusion: Nursing staffs had good knowledge of pressure injury management but did not improve in practice.
