Abstract:
This paper investigates the 3D printing (3DP) application in physical modeling of rock masses. The mechanical behavior of the rock mass is controlled both by the properties of intact rock, and by the presence of discontinuities at different scales. To understand the influence of these discontinuities on the mechanical behavior of structures exploited within a rock mass, 3DP is used to model explicitly the discontinuities in physical modeling. Artificial rock joints are made of polyamide 12 by 3DP (SLS laser sintering technique). They are characterized geometrically (roughness, joint aperture, presence of rock bridges) and mechanically (normal and shear stiffness, cohesion, friction angle, etc.) to reproduce the behavior of a real rock joint. Then, the experimental results are translated to the prototype scale (scale 1) by applying scale factors and compared to the actual rock joints properties. Finally, numerical model of a rock mass at the prototype scale and at reduced scale with the experimental properties of PA12 are compared. The results validate the ability of this technique to reproduce the behavior of a discontinuous mass on a reduced scale.
