Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Grammatical Studies on Vietnamese can be grouped together under four headings. This paper will examine the most representative works belonging to all four of them: 1. Alexandre de Rhodes: Dictionarum annamiticum, lusitanium et latinum, Rome 1651; Trương Vĩnh Ký: Grammaire de la langue annamite, Saigon 1883. 2. MM. Grammont et Lê Quang Trình: Etudes sur la langue annamite, t. MSL, t. 17, Paris 1911-1912. 3. Lê Văn Lý: Le parler vietnamien, Huong Anh, Paris 1948. 4. Comité d’État des Sciences Sociales du Viet Nam: Grammaire de la langue vietnamienne, Hanoi, 2000. The influence of Latin and French models can be felt respectively in the works of Alexandre De Rhodes and Trương Vĩnh Ký. Conscious of the mistakes made by their predecessors, M. Grammont and Lê Quang Trình start in a different direction and they totally reject the use of grammatical categories for describing the Vietnamese language. The work by Lê Văn Lý is an important milestone in the linguistic study of the Vietnamese language. He is the first Vietnamese linguist to establish the existence of word classes in his mother tongue based on their possible combination with witness-words. Vietnamese grammar has then evolved with the contribution of linguists under the guidance of Nguyễ̃n Kim Thản and of Nguyễn Tài Cẩn. By adopting semanticosyntactic criteria, these linguists provide an acceptable solution to the problem of the classification of words in Vietnamese.
