Abstract: Historical climatology is commonly defined as the study of past climates based on ‘documentary evidence’ before the establishment of modern networks of meteorological measurement, which excludes the last two centuries of recent global warming. This article reviews historical climatology with regard to the Anthropocene. In the Anthropocene the dynamics of climate change are essentially anthropogenic. The term ‘sociosphere’ will be advocated as a terminological improvement over existing attempts to define the place of human activities in Earth System Analysis. Theoretical and empirical advances in the study of social ecodynamics are called for. Historical climatology has a capacity to contribute making such advances, but a redefinition is inevitable for this potential to be realized: (1) historical climatology needs to expand temporally into the 19th and 20th centuries; and (2) it has yet to adjust to an important conceptual transition in climatology: from a descriptive (meteorological) concept of climate to climate dynamics.

Abstract: This essay examines the practices of networking among the erudite in late medieval and carly modern Europe. The building up of trust among individuals was sought through the channel of friendship, the most important form of sociability among the learned. This came to be the basis for an all-encompassing form of scientific exchange that took place through the medium of personal correspondence. How did bonds of friendship come to be created? How were these sustained over long distances within a society of limited mobility? What was the role of the exchange of gifts in these processes which, taking a cue from Pierre Bourdieu, could be designated as an 'economy of faith and trust'?

Abstract: Der Klimawandel war im 17.

Abstract: This paper describes part of the early history of crop insurance in Switzerland as a process of adaptation to the hazard of hail. It argues that insurance is a means of socialising hazard through risk sharing and, therefore, that adaptation is an active process influenced by various decisions both within and outside the insurance market. These decisions are as much a part of the story as is the variability of hailstorms in Switzerland. A period of more extreme hailstorms, which challenged insurance provision, occurred between 1920 and 1930 and was linked by reinsurers with climatic change. Examination of this time period will lead to a discussion of insurance in the context of the current debate on global warming, its projected impacts, and possible strategies of adaptation.
