Abstract: The study of avian species diversity and abundance at the Taunsa Barrage Ramsar site was carried out from September 2019 to March 2020. Taunsa Barrage is an important wetland for international and local migratory birds, including waterfowls, waders, and long-distance migrant avifauna. Data were collected by direct counts made on four-point transects representing a disturbance gradient due to humans and different habitats. Species diversity indices, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and other statistical methods were used to analyze data. A total of 150 avian species of 19 orders and 53 families were recorded. These included 66 migrant species and 84 resident species. The spotting of ten globally threatened species also highlights the importance of wetland for avian species. On average, 1511 ± 373 ( mean ± SD ) species of birds were recorded every month. Shannon’s diversity index indicated that Transect Point 2 had higher species diversity ( H ′ = 3.779 ), followed by Transect Points 3, 4, and 1 ( H ′ = 3.769 , H ′ = 3.491 , and H ′ = 3.457 , respectively). Evenness index showed that birds evenly distributed in September ( E = 0.5584 ) than November ( E = 0.310 9). ANOVA showed a significant difference ( F = 4.800 , df = 3 , P = 0.002 ) of avian diversity and abundance among the transect points. But there was no statistically significant interaction between months ( F = 1.23 , df = 6 , P = 0.233 ). The results showed that the Taunsa Barrage Ramsar site harbors plenty of resident migratory and threatened bird species. Hence, it is important to protect its habitat and need to protect avian diversity by overcoming major threats.

Abstract: Oxidative stress is a type of stress that damages DNA and can occur from both endogenous and exogenous sources. Damage to DNA caused by oxidative stress can result in base modifications that promote replication errors and the formation of sites of base loss, which pose unique challenges to the preservation of genomic integrity. However, the adaptive evolution of the DNA repair mechanism is poorly understood in vertebrates. This research aimed to explore the evolutionary relationships, physicochemical characteristics, and comparative genomic analysis of the Nei-like glycosylase gene family involved in DNA base repair in the vertebrates. The genomic sequences of NEIL1, NEIL2, and NEIL3 genes were aligned to observe selection constraints in the genes, which were relatively low conserved across vertebrate species. The positive selection signals were identified in these genes across the vertebrate lineages. We identified that only about 2.7% of codons in these genes were subjected to positive selection. We also revealed that positive selection pressure was increased in the Fapy-DNA-glyco and H2TH domain, which are involved in the base excision repair of DNA that has been damaged by oxidative stress. Gene structure, motif, and conserved domain analysis indicated that the Nei-like glycosylase genes in mammals and avians are evolutionarily low conserved compared to other glycosylase genes in other “vertebrates” species. This study revealed that adaptive selection played a critical role in the evolution of Nei-like glycosylase in vertebrate species. Systematic comparative genome analyses will give key insights to elucidate the links between DNA repair and the development of lifespan in various organisms as more diverse vertebrate genome sequences become accessible.

Abstract: Direct dyes are used in different textile operations and processings. The textile industries are disposing of unused direct dyes into the aquatic environment which is posing a serious alarming threat to aquatic lives. The current study deals with the synthesis of nickel oxide nanoparticles using Allium cepa peels aqueous extract. Nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO-NPs) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Synthesized NiO-NPs were used to remove Congo red direct dye. Various experimental factors like concentration of dye and nanoparticles, pH, and temperature were optimized. Congo red direct dye was decolorized up to 90% at optimized conditions (Congo Red Direct dye concentration 0.02%, catalyst dose 0.003 g·L−1, pH 6, and temperature 50 °C). The real textile industry effluent disclosed 70% decolorization at optimized conditions. The percent reduction in total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was found to be 73.24% and 74.56% in the case of Congo red dye catalytic treatment and the percent reduction in TOC and COD was found to be 62.47% and 60.23%, respectively, in the treatment of textile effluent using nickel oxide nanoparticles as a catalyst. Treated and untreated dye samples were exposed to Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and UV-Visible spectral analyses too. The reaction products were studied by degradation pathway.

Abstract: There are many thyroid diseases affecting people all over the world. Many diseases affect the thyroid gland, like hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid cancer. Thyroid inefficiency can cause severe symptoms in patients. Effective classification and machine learning play a significant role in the timely detection of thyroid diseases. This timely classification will indeed affect the timely treatment of the patients. Automatic and precise thyroid nodule detection in ultrasound pictures is critical for reducing effort and radiologists’ mistake rate. Medical images have evolved into one of the most valuable and consistent data sources for machine learning generation. In this paper, various machine learning algorithms like decision tree, random forest algorithm, KNN, and artificial neural networks on the dataset create a comparative analysis to better predict the disease based on parameters established from the dataset. Also, the dataset has been manipulated for accurate prediction for the classification. The classification was performed on both the sampled and unsampled datasets for better comparison of the dataset. After dataset manipulation, we obtained the highest accuracy for the random forest algorithm, equal to 94.8% accuracy and 91% specificity.

Abstract: A variety of industries employ synthetic azo dyes. However, the biosphere is being damaged by the unused/leftover azo dyes, which pose a danger to all living things. Therefore, treating them to shield the environment from the potential harm of azo dyes is crucial. Bio-sorption is a cheap and effective mode for eliminating toxic dyes in the environment. The current work focused on synthesizing magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles using an aqueous leaf extract of neem ( Azadirachta indica ). The XRD and SEM analyses of MgO nanoparticles indicated the crystalline nature of MgO nanoparticles with a cubic structure, and the size was around 90–100 nm. FTIR analysis showed the presence of a stretching frequency peak at 550 cm −1 , confirming the Mg–O bond. The surface analysis revealed the cluster form of the synthesized nanoparticles. The UV–visible absorption peak for MgO nanoparticles was found at 294 nm and band gap of 4.52 eV. In order to eliminate the Reactive Red 195 dye, MgO nanoparticles were used. At pH 4, 40 °C, 0.02% dye concentration, and 0.003 g/L catalyst amount, the highest degree of decolorization (91%) was seen. Decreased total organic carbon (TOC) and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) percent were 84.33% and 81.3%, respectively. The proposed mechanism of target dye degradation was also investigated. MgO NPs were found to be effective in their catalytic behavior toward the degradation of Reactive Red 195 dye up to five cycles with almost no change in their catalytic activity.

Abstract: Mushrooms have been accepted as nutraceutical foods because of their high nutritional and functional values. They have also gained interest due to their medicinal properties, economic importance, and organoleptic merit. In this study, wild Ganoderma lucidum and four commercial mushrooms, that is, Pleurotus ostreatus, Volvariella volvacea, Hericium erinaceus, and Lentinus edodes from Pakistan were screened for their biological activities such as anticancer, antityrosinase, anti‐α‐glucosidase, and antithrombotic activities from their methanol, ethanol, and water extracts. Enzyme inhibition assay showed that selected mushrooms are potent inhibitors with %age inhibition ranging from 19.00% to 80.91%, and 32.85% to 83.38% for tyrosinase and α‐glucosidase, respectively. The best tyrosinase inhibition was shown by P. ostreatus whereas L. edodes was found best as α‐glucosidase inhibitor. These mushrooms were tested against cancer cell lines including HT ‐29 colon and H‐1299 lungs carcinoma cell lines. G. lucidum showed 29% and 24% viability of cells against HT ‐29 and H‐1299 cell lines, respectively. This antiproliferative effect was in dose‐dependent manner, and the maximum inhibition was observed at 200 μg/ ml . Mushrooms extracts were also found effective against clot lysis. The percentage of clot lysis was in the range of 27%–29%. The research would provide knowledge to the people of Pakistan about the importance of locally available commercial mushrooms and wild mushrooms for health improvement and prevention against different kinds of diseases.

Abstract: Acupoint application has been used in China to treat various illnesses for ages. In cough variant asthma (CVA), the main clinical sign is episodic night cough. Acupoint application therapy of traditional Chinese medicine is an effective procedure to treat cough variant asthma. The current study is designed to systematically assess the effectiveness of acupoint application therapy in traditional medicine for patients with cough variant asthma. The comprehensive computer retrieval related to comparison between acupoint application and nonacupoint application therapy for cough variant asthma was carried out in various databases ( n = 8 ) from database establishment until July 4, 2021. Both English and Chinese articles about original investigations in humans were searched. Two independent authors extracted the data, and disagreements were resolved by discussion. ReviewManager 5.3 software provided by Cochrane did a meta-analysis of selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Quality of experimentation and risk bias were analyzed by the Cochrane Handbook tool. A total of thirteen randomized controlled clinical articles along with 1237 patients were included in the study. Findings of meta-analysis showed that compared with nonacupoint application treatment, the total effective rate of acupoint application treatment is more effective ( RD = 0.13 , 95% CI (0.09, 0.17), Z = 6.70 , P 〈 0.00001 ). Besides, acupoint application can improve patients’ lung function, the lung function index FVC ( mean   difference = 0.55 , 95% confidence interval (0.42, 0.68), Z = 8.40 , P 〈 0.00001 ), FEV1 ( MD = 0.35 , 95% CI (0.23, 0.47), Z = 5.86 , P 〈 0.00001 ), FEV1/FVC (%) ( MD = 12.68 , 95% CI (4.32, 21.03), Z = 2.97 , P = 0.003 ), FEV1 (%) ( MD = 8.63 , 95% CI (8.01, 9.25), Z = 27.44 , P 〈 0.00001 ), and PEF (day) ( MD = 0.62 , 95% CI (0.52, 0.71), Z = 12.40 , P 〈 0.00001 ) of patients treated by acupoint application therapy were increased. Moreover, acupoint application might lower the level of immunoglobulin E ( MD = − 54.58 , 95% CI (−63.54, −45.61), Z = 11.93 , P 〈 0.00001 ) and EOS ( MD = − 0.21 , 95% CI (−0.35, −0.06), Z = 2.77 , P = 0.006 ). The LCQ (Leicester cough questionnaire) total score of CVA patients was also increased ( MD = 2.30 , 95% CI (1.55, 3.06), Z = 5.98 , P 〈 0.00001 ). Acupoint application therapy is effective in controlling symptoms of CVA. It also has a positive effect in improving lung function and life quality of patients. It can reduce the eosinophil levels and peripheral blood IgE levels of patients as well.
