    Abstract: Due to the potential engineering needs, the passive tunable metasurfaces with a high performance equivalent to the active phased array is worthy of research. Here, a passive ultrathin metasurface unit composed of a piezoelectric composite structure (PCS) connected to an external capacitor, which can modulate the phase of the transmitted acoustic waves at a deep subwavelength scale only by controlling the external capacitor but without changing the structure, is proposed. Then, a tunable acoustic metasurface composed of 20 identical PCSs is introduced to realize three acoustic functions, beam steering, beam focusing, and tweezer-like beam generating, just by changing the external capacitors. The phase-control abilities of the PCS unit and three functions of the designed metasurface are proved both numerically and experimentally. This study provides the possibility to design ultrathin tunable acoustic metasurfaces with the ability of precise control and passive materials.

    Abstract: Facet surfaces of the cricoarytenoid joints from two cadaver larynges were digitized. The data were used to compute the optimal axis of rotation for each of the joints in the sense that the computed axis minimized the variance of the joint gap over the full range of joint motion. The optimal axis corresponded to a rocking motion of the arytenoid on the corresponding cricoid. This motion was consistent with experimental data from digitized recordings of vocal fold movement. Using the rigid laryngoscopic view, a similarity in vocal process movement, over the range in motion, between the rocking axis and the vertical axis described in the literature was found, resolving the controversy between two conflicting views of motion of the vocal processes.

    Abstract: This paper presents a full numerical model accounting for the heat transfer and phase-change by combining the modified Keller–Miksis equation with the second order term of compressibility of liquid, partial differential equations (PDEs), and Hertz–Knudsen–Langmuir equation. Then, a simplified model for studying the dynamics of the cavitation bubble or bubble excited by the acoustic waves is proposed. The major contribution is to simplify the full model with PDEs to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Specifically, two energy PDEs are converted to three ODEs by coupling the boundary conditions. The comparison among the full model and other simplified models is used to validate the accuracy and superiority of the simplified model, from which the application range of the proposed simplified model can be determined.

    Abstract: Accurately reconstructing a three-dimensional (3D) ocean sound speed field (SSF) is essential for various ocean acoustic applications, but the sparsity and uncertainty of sound speed samples across a vast ocean region make it a challenging task. To tackle this challenge, a large body of reconstruction methods has been developed, including spline interpolation, matrix/tensor-based completion, and deep neural networks (DNNs)-based reconstruction. However, a principled analysis of their effectiveness in 3D SSF reconstruction is still lacking. This paper performs a thorough analysis of the reconstruction error and highlights the need for a balanced representation model that integrates expressiveness and conciseness. To meet this requirement, a 3D SSF-tailored tensor DNN is proposed, which uses tensor computations and DNN architectures to achieve remarkable 3D SSF reconstruction. The proposed model not only includes the previous tensor-based SSF representation model as a special case but also has a natural ability to reject noise. The numerical results using the South China Sea 3D SSF data demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods.     Abstract: The word Hopsca means Hotel + Office + Park + Shopping mall + Convention + Apartment and was originated from La Defense in Paris of France in 1986. Metro depot is generally a parking and maintenance base and covers a large area and available land resources. It is a feasible approach to achieve comprehensive land utilization to develop top head estates above the depot by building residential, business, commercial, and recreational and sports urban functions. Such cases are well done, for example, in Hong Kong but generally few. The Metro in Hangzhou City of China is developing such a Hopsca. Because the trains will run and receive maintenance in the depot, the vibration and noise must be designed not transmitted to the top head estates. It will be very valuable to study the transmission and control of the vibration. This paper managed to estimate the complex vibration by simple analog measurement and analysis on a typical aboveground metro station with top head urban functions in Shanghai City of China.

    Abstract: Detecting whistle events is essential when studying the population density and behavior of cetaceans. After eight months of passive acoustic monitoring in Xiamen, we obtained long calls from two Tursiops aduncus individuals. In this paper, we propose an algorithm with an unbiased gammatone multi-channel Savitzky–Golay for smoothing dynamic continuous background noise and interference from long click trains. The algorithm uses the method of least squares to perform a local polynomial regression on the time–frequency representation of multi-frequency resolution call measurements, which can effectively retain the whistle profiles while filtering out noise and interference. We prove that it is better at separating out whistles and has lower computational complexity than other smoothing methods. In order to further extract whistle features in enhanced spectrograms, we also propose a set of multi-scale and multi-directional moving filter banks for various whistle durations and contour shapes. The final binary adaptive decisions at frame level for whistle events are obtained from the histograms of multi-scale and multi-directional spectrograms. Finally, we explore the entire data set and find that the proposed scheme achieves the highest frame-level F1-scores when detecting T. aduncus whistles than the baseline schemes, with an improvement of more than 6%.

    Abstract: Parity-time (PT) symmetric systems experience phase transition between PT “exact” and “broken” phases at exceptional point. These PT phase transitions contribute significantly to the design of single mode lasers, coherent perfect absorbers, isolators, diodes, etc. However, such exceptional points are extremely difficult to access in practice because of the dispersive behavior of most loss and gain materials required in PT symmetric systems. Here, we introduce a method to systematically tame these exceptional points and control PT phases. Our experimental demonstration hinges on an active acoustic element that realizes a complex-valued potential and simultaneously controls the multiple interference in the structure. The manipulation of exceptional points offers new routes to broaden applications for PT symmetric physics in acoustics, optics, microwaves, and electronics, which are essential for sensing, communication, and imaging.
