Abstract:
Antibodies to reovirus double‐stranded RNA ( 3 H‐reovirus RNA) were demonstrated in 23 of 54 sera (42%) of patients with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) and 35 of 50 sera (70%) of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) using a cellulose ester filter radioimmunoassay. The incidence of antibodies to 3 H‐reovirus RNA was 10% in psoriasis, 14% in rheumatoid arthritis, 19% in Sjogren's syndrome and 4% in normal controls. Inhibition studies performed on SLE and DLE sera showed that the anti‐RNA antibodies had similar specificities. These results suggest that DLE may be part of the SLE spectrum.
