    Abstract: Inflammatory pain is the most common type of pain encountered clinically. The analgesic effect of acupuncture has been well-documented. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the involvement of chemokine CXCL1 in the serum on manual acupuncture (MA)-induced antinociception. Methods: Rats with inflammatory pain of the right hind paw were induced by intraplantar (i.pl.) administration of complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA). After wards, the CFA-injected rats were treated daily with MA at ST36 from Day 1 to Day 7, and thermal nociceptive thresholds (paw withdrawal latency; PWL) were analyzed. The concentration of CXCL1 in the serum of the rats was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) after the first and the last MA treatment. Subsequently, the rats were injected with two doses (5 or 10 μg) of recombinant CXCL1 through the tail vein daily from Day 1 to Day 7 or injected with two doses (6.4 or 16 μg) of anti-CXCL1 antibody using the same methods and course at 30 min before MA, and the PWLs were measured again. Finally, naloxone (500 μg, 0.1 mL) was administered by i.pl. injection into the inflamed paw 5 min before the last MA treatment or last injection of recombinant CXCL1. Results: MA significantly increased the PWLs and upregulated the expression of serum CXCL1 in the CFA-injected rats. Without acupuncture, repeated tail vein injection of recombinant CXCL1 showed an analgesic effect on CFA-induced inflammatory pain. Conversely, the neutralization of serum CXCL1 by anti-CXCL1 antibody decreased MA-induced antinociception in a time-dependent manner. Anti-CXCL1 antibody injected just once before the first MA did not affect MA-induced antinociception. The analgesic effects of MA and recombinant CXCL1 were reversed by an i.pl. injection of naloxone. Conclusion: This study indicates MA at ST36 had an analgesic effect on inflammatory pain and found a novel function of CXCL1. Increased serum CXCL1 had an antinociceptive effect on inflammatory pain induced by CFA. CXCL1 in serum appeared to be a key molecule involved in the peripheral mechanism of MA-induced antinociception. The analgesic effect of MA or recombinant CXCL1 on inflammatory pain might be mediated through a peripheral opioid pathway, which needs further investigation.

    Abstract: Predication of large-scale grid-connected wind power is important for a power system operation’s stability and security. To avoid the problem of being excessively dependent on reference samples, cross entropy theory-based information fusion technology is utilized to set up a new combination predication model for wind power prediction. In this new model, wind power prediction is regarded as an information fusion problem, and the weights of each predication method are dynamically determined by the cross degree of prediction methods obtained by cross entropy theory. The case studies of a practical wind farm validate the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed method to predict wind power and the design of the power dispatching scheme.

    Abstract: Quantitative models in marketing typically focus on the household as the unit of analysis while ignoring the individual family members' behavior and the behavioral interactions among household members. However, knowledge of such intrahousehold behavioral interaction enables marketers to target their communications more effectively. In this article, the authors propose a modeling framework to capture the intrahousehold behavioral interaction based on family members' actual consumption behavior over time. The authors develop a model to capture multiple agents' (more than two individuals') simultaneous choice decisions over more than two choice alternatives. This is extremely difficult with other previously developed modeling approaches. The authors apply the proposed model to a context of family members' television viewing and simultaneously model whether the television is on, which type of program is playing, and which family members are watching. The proposed model makes it possible to estimate the individual's intrinsic preference and the extrinsic preference from a joint consumption with other members. In turn, these estimates enable the authors to test several alternative group decision-making heuristics that may operate in those joint consumption occasions and to conduct managerially useful counterfactual simulations.

    Abstract: Aims: Osteoporosis is underdiagnosed because of the lack of a convenient diagnostic method. Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) emerge as novel biomarkers for disease diagnosis. Here, we conducted a case-control study that included a total of 448 serum samples collected from 182 healthy participants, 132 osteopenia participants, and 134 osteoporosis patients. Methods: Circulating miRNAs dysregulated during osteoporosis were screened and analyzed in three randomly determined sub-cohorts: the discovery cohort identified 22 candidate miRNAs; the training cohort tested the candidate miRNAs and constructed Index 1, comprising five miRNAs by logistic regression, and Index 2, comprising four miRNAs, was developed by linear combination. Results: Both indices were tested in the validation cohort and showed statistically significant results in distinguishing osteoporosis patients from healthy and osteopenic patients. Moreover, Index 1 also showed improved performance over traditional bone turnover biomarkers type I pro-collagen (tPINP) and type I collagen (β-CTx). Conclusion: In conclusion, circulating miRNAs are potential biomarkers for osteoporosis. The diagnostic panel of circulating miRNAs could be a complementary method for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in mass screening and routine examination to enhance the osteoporosis detection rate.

    Abstract: Many studies have examined the impact of economic fundamentals on the financial market, but few have explored how financial market information affects the real economy. In this paper, we examine the effects of stock price informativeness on firms’ total factor productivity (TFP) using panel data of Chinese listed manufacturing firms over the period 2007 to 2017. Specifically, we use stock price nonsynchronicity to measure stock price informativeness, and real economic activity efficiency is proxied by the listed firms’ total factor productivity estimated by the LP and ACF methods. We find that stock price informativeness is positively associated with firms’ productivity in China. More importantly, we propose two possible mechanisms to intensify the consequences of stock price informativeness and find that operating pressure and financial constraints can positively intensify the relationship between stock price informativeness and firms’ TFP. As financial information is crucial for sustainable and steady economic growth, our research not only helps to reveal how the financial market promotes economic growth but also helps to provide new ideas for managers and policy-makers to alleviate operating pressure and financing constraints.

    Abstract: Axl, a tyrosine kinase receptor, was recently identified as an essential component regulating innate immune response. Suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 and suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 are potent Axl-inducible negative inflammatory regulators. This study investigated the role of Axl signaling pathway in immune restoration in an autologous blood-injection mouse model of intracerebral hemorrhage. Recombinant growth arrest-specific 6 (Gas6) and R428 were administrated as specific agonist and antagonist. In vivo knockdown of Axl or suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 and suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 by siRNA was applied. After intracerebral hemorrhage, the expression of endogenous Axl, soluble Axl, and Gas6 was increased, whereas the expression of suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 and suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 was inhibited. Recombinant growth arrest-specific 6 administration alleviated brain edema and improved neurobehavioral performances. Moreover, enhanced Axl phosphorylation with cleavage of soluble Axl (sAxl), and an upregulation of suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 and suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 were observed. In vivo knockdown of Axl and R428 administration both abolished the effect of recombinant growth arrest-specific 6 on brain edema and also decreased the expression suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 and suppressor of cytokine signaling 3. In vivo knockdown of suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 and suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 aggravated cytokine releasing despite of recombinant growth arrest-specific 6. In conclusion, Axl plays essential role in immune restoration after intracerebral hemorrhage. And recombinant growth arrest-specific 6 attenuated brain injury after intracerebral hemorrhage, probably by enhancing Axl phosphorylation and production of suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 and suppressor of cytokine signaling 3.

    Abstract: Electroacupuncture (EA) can effectively relieve visceral hypersensitivity (VH). However, its mechanisms are still unclear. Objective: To investigate the impact of EA on VH caused by ileitis, and whether EA relieves VH by modulating the endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS). Methods: Thirty male native goats were randomly divided into a saline-treated control group (Saline, n = 9) and three 2,4,6-trinitro-benzenesulfonic acid (TNBS)-treated VH model groups that underwent injection of TNBS into the ileal wall to induce VH and remained untreated (TNBS, n = 9) or received six sessions of EA (for 30 min every 3 days) (TNBS + EA, n = 6) or sham acupuncture (TNBS + Sham, n = 6). The visceromotor response (VMR) to colorectal distention (CRD) was measured after each EA treatment. Three goats in the Saline/TNBS groups were euthanized after 7 days for histopathological examination; the remaining 24 (n = 6/group) underwent sampling of the ileal wall, T11 spinal cord and brain nuclei/areas related to visceral regulation and ascending pain modulation system on day 22. Expression of cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1R), fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) and monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) was detected by immunohistochemistry. Results: VMR to CRD was greater in TNBS-treated goats than in saline-treated goats (p 〈 0.01) from day 7 to 22. After day 7, EA-treated goats showed a decreased (p 〈 0.05) VMR compared with untreated TNBS-exposed goats. TNBS treatment decreased CB1R and increased FAAH and MAGL expression in the ileum and related nuclei/areas; this was reversed by EA. Conclusion: EA ameliorates VH, probably by regulating the ECS in the intestine and nuclei/areas related to visceral regulation and descending pain modulation systems.

    Abstract: 2-Acyl-1H-indenes were synthesised efficiently by the reaction of o-halogenatedbenzaldehydes (or aryl ketones) with prop-2-en-1-ols via one-pot palladium-catalysed tandem Heck–aldol reaction in moderate to good yields. The optimal reaction conditions have been investigated and it was found that sodium acetate was the most effective base and in addition tetrabutylammonium chloride and LiCl was crucial for this process. Moreover, it was found that o-halogenatedbenzaldehydes react with various substituted prop-2-en-1-ols smoothly to produce the title compounds while 2-bromoacetophenone only reacted with 2-propen-1-ol to give the desired product.

    Abstract: PD98059 is a potent and selective inhibitor of mitogen-activated protein kinase. Substantial preclinical evidence has shown an anti-tumor effect of curcumin on various solid tumors. This study aimed to investigate whether curcumin synergistically acts with PD98059 in exerting anti-gastric cancer effects. Methods The cell counting kit-8 assay was used to detect cell proliferation of the human gastric cancer MGC-803 cell line. Flow cytometry was performed to detect apoptosis. Western blotting was used to detect phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) and phosphorylated Akt (p-Akt) expression levels. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was used to determine microRNA-21 (miR-21). Results A dose of 5 to 40 µM curcumin inhibited proliferation of MGC-803 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. A high dose of curcumin strongly inhibited p-Akt protein expression. With increasing curcumin levels, PTEN expression increased and miR-21 levels decreased. These results suggest that curcumin negatively modulated the miR-21/PTEN/Akt pathway. Moreover, after pretreatment with PD98059, cell apoptosis induced by curcumin was significantly increased. Additionally, the inhibitory effects of curcumin on the miR-21/PTEN/Akt pathway were significantly enhanced. Conclusion PD98059 combined with curcumin may be a potential strategy for managing gastric cancer.

    Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the quantity of DNA and RNA extractable from human formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues stored for different lengths of time. Methods We randomly selected 20 FFPE specimens harvested from hysteromyoma patients with uterine fibroids during 2010, 2015, and 2017 at the Department of Pathology, Jiading District Central Hospital Affiliated Shanghai University of Medicine and Health Sciences. DNA and RNA extractions were performed using a DNA/RNA FFPE kit. DNA and RNA concentrations and their OD 260 /OD 280 ratios were determined by a NanoDrop 2000 spectrophotometer. The human β-globin gene and aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH 2 ) gene were amplified from nucleic acids using a LightCycler 480 Real-Time PCR System, and PCR amplification products were electrophoresed on 1% agarose gels. Results Specimens that were stored for longer showed more degradation and a reduced concentration of DNA and RNA after nucleic acid extraction. However, there was no significant difference in DNA or RNA purity. β-globin and ALDH 2 genes could be amplified from more than 99% of specimens. Conclusion We found that FFPE tissues stored for longer had a reduced quantity of extractable DNA and RNA. However, these tissues could be used for the analysis of some small target genes.
