Abstract: Results from studies of foam sizing are presented. Foaming characteristics of several size materials including polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethylcellulose, deriva tized starches, acrylic polymers, and polyesters are described. Influence of size for mulation viscosity and concentration on foamability of sizes is demonstrated. Tech niques for transport and application of foam sizes are presented. Properties of poly ester/cotton yarns sized using foam are equivalent or superior to those of similar yarns sized conventionally. Economics of application of size using foam are also considered.

Abstract: A comparison is made of tensile and abrasive properties and weaving performance of polyester/cotton yams sized with polyvinyl alcohol with and without wax in the size formulation. Waxy lubricants are usually present in size formulations for spun yams. Wax enhances size application by reducing the tendency of the size to stick to drying cylinders, lowering the force necessary to split the yams at the lease rods, and defoaming the formulation. Wax is often difficult and costly to remove from fabrics in finishing, however, which raises manufacturing costs and lowers fabric quality. Wax also reduces the strength of the size film, adhesion of the size to the fibers and, con sequently, the resistance to abrasion of the yam. Since sized yam must have at least a minimum level of abrasion resistance in order to be woven successfully, a higher size add-on level is necessary when wax is present in the size formulation.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to increase understanding of the experience of parenting kindergarten-aged children who are anxious. Twenty-three in-depth interviews were conducted with parents of kindergarten-aged children who expressed interest in a parent-focused early intervention program for child anxiety offered in a local elementary school. Key concerns of the parents included their children’s separation anxiety, social anxiety, and oppositional behaviour. The child’s anxiety was identified as a stressor on the child, the parent, and the family. Parents utilized a range of parenting responses although they tended to be reactive and did not have a consistent strategy for managing the anxiety. A salient parenting struggle was whether or not to push the child to face challenging situations although there were few descriptions of overprotection or overcontrol. The findings suggest greater attention be given to the strengths of parents of children who are anxious and the ways in which parents may be a positive factor in mitigating the effects of child anxiety. Implications for intervention are discussed.

Abstract: A major objective of the European Commission (EC) is to strengthen the position of intermodal transport to make it competitive with road transport. In particular, the EC would like to remove obstacles impeding the use of intermodal transport between Western Europe and Central and Eastern European countries. There is a description of work performed for the EC that examined the existing intermodal transport system, identified the major bottlenecks in the system, and identified and prioritized policies that the EC might implement for reducing the negative effects of the bottlenecks. Identification and prioritization of bottlenecks are described. Through desk research and surveys of forwarders, terminal operators, and link operators, 35 groups of bottlenecks were identified. They were prioritized with a set of 11 performance criteria determined on the basis of surveys. Also, identification and prioritization of policies are described. One or more policies were identified to help solve each of the bottlenecks. The resulting set of 70 policies was evaluated and prioritized by experts by using 6 performance criteria and 5 feasibility criteria. A final set of 7 policies for reducing the negative effects of the most important bottlenecks was recommended to the EC.
