    Abstract: We investigated the “BURP” maneuver’s effect on the association between difficult laryngoscopy and difficult intubation, and predictors of a difficult airway. Methods Adult patients who underwent general anesthesia and tracheal intubation from September 2016 to May 2018 were included. The “BURP” maneuver was performed when glottic exposure was classified as Cormack–Lehane grade 3 or 4, suggesting difficult laryngoscopy. The thyromental distance, modified Mallampati score, and interincisor distance were assessed before anesthesia. Results Among this study’s 2028 patients, the “BURP” maneuver decreased difficult laryngoscopies from 428 (21.1%) to 124 (6.1%) cases and increased the difficult intubation to difficult laryngoscopy ratio from 53/428 (12.4%) to 52/124 (41.9%). For laryngoscopies classified as difficult without the “BURP” maneuver, the area under the curve (AUC) of the thyromental distance, modified Mallampati score, and interincisor distance was 0.60, 0.57, and 0.66, respectively. In difficult laryngoscopies using the “BURP” maneuver, the AUC of the thyromental distance, modified Mallampati score, and interincisor distance was 0.71, 0.67, and 0.76, respectively. Conclusions The “BURP” maneuver improves the laryngoscopic view and assists in difficult laryngoscopies. Compared with difficult laryngoscopies without the “BURP” maneuver, those with the “BURP” maneuver are more closely associated with difficult intubations and are more predictable.     Abstract: Cartilage damage is frequent in various joint diseases, mainly manifested by the loss of type II collagen and the degradation of proteoglycans. Diclofenac sodium is a commonly used drug for the treatment of joint diseases, but simple administration is often affected by drug clearance and rapid metabolism. Intra-articular drug delivery is an effective method for local enrichment of high concentration of drugs. However, due to the short half-life of diclofenac sodium, prolonging the stability and duration of the drug can alleviate the disadvantages of direct intra-articular application. Nanospheres for delivering drugs to treat joint diseases could be a remedy for cartilage damage. In addition, excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by macrophages activated in damaged cartilage would aggravate cartilage damage. Therefore, this study intends to use poly lactic-co-glycolic acid nanospheres to load and deliver diclofenac sodium to inhibit chondrocyte death while regulating the generation of ROS, thereby promoting the treatment of cartilage damage.

    Abstract: Limited research has explored the potential explanatory mechanisms for the link between abusive leadership and non-negative employee-based behaviors in the effectiveness of organizational management. Based on affective response theory to construct a theoretical model, this study enhances the mapping of how employee-perceived abusive leadership triggers employee affective responses and influences their political behaviors to facilitate task-related goals. It also investigates how the moderating effects of employee-perceived leader's narcissistic personality interact with the variables of the main effects. This study was implemented in Taiwan's financial and insurance institutions. Using a sampling framework via a market survey agency, participants completed three online surveys within a 3-week period. 350 employed participants registered for the study. Based on the findings, we suggest that managers in a hierarchical organization may be able to intentionally vary their leadership style to arouse employees' negative emotions without hindering, and perhaps even improving, employees' motivation to achieve their task aims. When leaders demonstrate their self-confidence in the workplace, employees perceive less anxiety at work and less need to adopt workplace political behaviors to solve work troubles. This research suggests managers should recognize employee-perceived abusive leadership as an influential factor that contributes to illuminating the processes underlying workplace perception-to-behavior and leader–member interactive links, as well as the boundary conditions of mediating and moderating these processes.

    Abstract: To evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of three-dimensional (3D)-printed individualised guiding templates in total hip arthroplasty (THA) for the treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Methods: 12 hips in 12 patients with Crowe type IV DDH were treated with THA. A 3D digital model of the pelvis and lower limbs was reconstructed using the computed tomography data of the patients. Preoperative surgical simulations were performed to determine the most suitable surgical planning, including femoral osteotomy and prosthesis placement. Based on the ideal surgical planning, individualised guiding templates were designed by software, manufactured using a 3D printer, and used in acetabulum reconstruction and femoral osteotomy during surgery. Results: 12 patients were followed up for an average of 72.42 months (range 38–135 months). During surgery, the guiding template for each case was matched to the bony markers of the acetabulum and proximal femur. Preoperative and follow-up Harris Hip Scores were 34.2 ± 3.7 and 85.2 ± 4.2; leg-length discrepancy, 51.5 ± 6.5 mm and 10.2 ± 1.5 mm; and visual analogue scale scores, 6.2 ± 0.8 and 1.3 ± 0.3, respectively, with statistical difference. Shortened deformity and claudication of the affected limb were obviously improved after surgery. However, 1 patient had artificial hip dislocation 2 weeks after surgery, and another patient had sciatic nerve traction injury, both of whom recovered after physical treatment. Conclusions: Preoperative surgical simulation and 3D-printed individualised guiding templates can fulfil surgeon-specific requirements for the treatment of Crowe type IV DDH. Accurate THA can be achieved using 3D-printed individualised templates, which provide a new personalised surgical plan for the precise positioning and orientation of acetabular reconstruction and femoral osteotomy.

    Abstract: Autonomic dysfunction, cognitive impairment, and psychological distress are associated with poorer prognosis in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback (BF) improves autonomic dysfunction, cognitive impairment, and psychological distress in other patient populations, but its effect in patients with AIS is still unclear. Objective: This study investigated the effects of an HRVBF intervention on autonomic function, cognitive impairment, and psychological distress in patients with AIS. Method: In this randomized, controlled, single-blind trial, patients with AIS were randomly assigned to the experimental or control group. The experimental group received four HRVBF training sessions. The control group received usual care. Repeated measures of HRV, mini-mental status examination (MMSE), and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scales (HADS) were collected prior to and at 1 and 3 months postintervention. Results: A total of 35 patients completed the study (19 experimental, 16 control). HRV and HADS significantly improved in the experimental group ( p 〈 .001) but not in the control group. Likewise, only the experimental group showed significant improvements in HRV, MMSE, and HADS over time ( p 〈 .05). Conclusion: HRVBF is a promising intervention for improving autonomic function, cognitive impairment, and psychological distress in patients with AIS. More studies of HRVBF interventions are needed to further optimize the effects of HRVBF on autonomic, cognitive, and psychological function in patients with AIS.

    Abstract: The coordination polymer {[Zn 3 (HhmIDC) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ]·2H 2] O} n [H 4 hmIDC = 2-(hydroxymethyl)-1 H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid] has been synthesised and structurally characterised. In the polymer, there are two crystallographically distinct Zn(II) ions that adopt different coordination environments. The polymer exhibits good fluorescence properties in the solid state at room temperature and its thermogravimetric properties are also described.

    Abstract: The study aimed to analyze the psychometric properties of a newly developed Chinese screening tool, the Chinese Version of the Speech Disorders in Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire (SDPD-C). The SDPD-C contains a 24-item questionnaire with four assessment domains. Overall, 93 patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (PD) (age 70.1 ± 8.9 years) and 76 healthy older adults (age 67.2 ± 8.1 years) participated in the psychometric analysis study. The internal consistency of the SDPD-C was .91 (four dimensions: .69–.85), and test-retest reliability was .91 (four dimensions: .85–.88). The SDPD-C was highly correlated with the Voice Handicap Index-10 and Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale II 2.1 (r = .83 and .78, respectively). The SDPD-C scores also differed significantly between stages 1 and 4 of the Hoehn and Yahr Scale ( p 〈 .05). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was .955 (95% confidence interval, .927–.983; asymptotic significance p 〈 .001), and the optimal cut-off score of this study was 36, with a sensitivity of .849 and specificity of .947. The results indicate that SDPD-C showed good reliability, validity, accuracy, and discrimination. It can be used as a screening tool for speech disorders in patients with PD.

    Abstract: To evaluate the effects of porous gradient composites with hydroxyapatite/zirconia and autologous iliac in repair of lumbar vertebra body defects in dogs. Methods (1) New porous gradient hydroxyapatite/zirconia composites were prepared using foam immersion, gradient compound and high temperature sintering; (2) A total of 18 adult beagle dogs, aged five to eight months and weighted 10–13 kg, were randomly assigned into two subgroups, which were implanted with new porous gradient hydroxyapatite/zirconia composites (subgroup A in 12) or autologous iliac bone (subgroup B in 6); (3) The post-operative data were analyzed and compared between the subgroups to repair the vertebral body defect by roentgenoscopy, morphology and biomechanics. Results The porosity of new porous gradient hydroxyapatite/zirconia composites is at 25 poles per inch, and the size of pores is at between 150 and 300 µm. The post-operative roentgenoscopy displayed that new-bone formation is increased gradually, and the interface between composites and host-bone becomes became blur, and the new-bone around the composites were integrated into host-bone at 24 weeks postoperatively in subgroup A. As to subgroup B, the resorption and restructure were found at six weeks after the surgery, and the graft-bone and host-bone have been integrated completely without obvious boundary at 24 weeks postoperatively. Histomorphologic study showed that the amount of bone within pores of the porous gradient hydroxyapatite/zirconia composites increased continuously with a prolonged implantation time, and that partial composites were degradated and replaced by new-bone trabeculae. There was no significant difference between subgroups ( P  〉  0.05) in the ultimate compressive strengths. Conclusion New porous gradient hydroxyapatite/zirconia composites can promote the repair of bony defect, and induce bone tissue to ingrow into the pores, which may be applied widely to the treatment of bony defect in the future.

    Abstract: Mushrooms are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat a variety of diseases. Grifola frondosa (GF) is an edible mushroom indigenous to many Asian countries with a large fruiting body characterized by overlapping caps. In particular, GF is known for its anti-tumor activity, which has been targeted by scientific and clinical research. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the cold-water extract of GF (GFW) and its active fraction (GFW-GF) on autophagy and apoptosis, and the underlying mechanisms in vitro and in vivo. Our results revealed that GFW and GFW-GF inhibited phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) and stimulated c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) pathways, thereby inducing autophagy. We also demonstrated that GFW and GFW-GF inhibited proliferation, induced cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis in Hep3B hepatoma cells. GFW and GFW-GF markedly arrested cells in S phase and promoted cleavage of caspase-3 and -9. In addition, GFW and GFW-GF decreased the expression levels of the anti-apoptotic proteins protein kinase B and extracellular signal-regulated kinase. We also found that GFW significantly inhibited tumor growth in nude mice implanted with Hep3B cells. Our work demonstrates that GF and its active fraction inhibit hepatoma growth by inducing autophagy and apoptosis.
