    Abstract: Alzheimer’s disease is neurodegenerative disorder due to the accumulation of amyloid- β in the brain and causes dementia with ageing. Some researches indicate that the RXR agonist, Targretin, has also been used for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease in mouse models. We investigate the potent candidates as RXR agonists from the vast repertoire of TCM compounds in TCM Database@Taiwan. The potential TCM compounds, β -lipoic acid and sulfanilic acid, had higher potent binding affinities than both 9- cis -retinoic acid and Targretin in docking simulation and have stable H-bonds with residues Arg316 and some equivalent hydrophobic contacts with residues Ala272, Gln275, Leu309, Phe313, Val342, Ile345, and Cys432 as Targretin. The carboxyl or sulfonyl hydroxide group can form a H-bond with key residue Arg316 in the docking pose, and the phenyl group next to the carboxyl or sulfonyl hydroxide group can form a π interaction with residue Phe313. Moreover, β -lipoic acid and sulfanilic acid have stable H-bonds with residue Gln275, Ser313, and residue Ala327, respectively, which may strengthen and stabilize TCM candidates inside the binding domain of RXR protein. Hence, we propose β -lipoic acid and sulfanilic acid as potential lead compounds for further study in drug development process with the RXR protein against Alzheimer’s disease.

    Abstract: Study Objectives. This study investigates the therapeutic effect of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) acupuncture for chronic insomnia. Methods. Thirty-seven adult subjects with chronic insomnia were recruited and randomly assigned to three groups, namely, Group A (6 pairs of acupoints: Ex-HN 22, HT 7, SP 6, KI 3, LR 3, and PC 6, bilaterally distributed); Group B (acupoints as for Group A other than PC 6, which was applied only on the left side [i.e., the dominant side of the PC meridian] and the addition of DU 20, which is the main tonic acupoint for integration of all the meridians); and a control group (sham LLLT). The subjects in the treatment groups (i.e., Groups A and B) received LLLT acupuncture and those in the control group received sham LLLT for 15 minutes per session twice a week for five weeks. The sleep quality of all the subjects was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and a sleep diary. In addition, the sympathetic activity before and after every treatment sessions was measured using the Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Results. All three groups showed an improved PSQI score. However, only Group A showed a significant reduction in the sleep onset latency and number of awakenings at night and a higher sleep efficiency and ESS score. Furthermore, Group B showed an increased low frequency power and normalized low frequency of the HRV signal and a lower normalized high frequency power, suggesting an increased sympathetic activity and decreased parasympathetic activity. Conclusions. For chronic insomnia insomniacs, LLLT appears to shorten the sleep latency, decrease the number of awakening events at night, and improve the sleep efficiency.

    Abstract: Network DEA models assess production systems that contain a set of network-structured subsystems. Each subsystem has input and output measures from and to the external network and has intermediate measures that link to other subsystems. Most published studies demonstrate how to employ DEA models to establish network DEA models. Neither static nor dynamic network DEA models adjust the links. This paper applies the virtual gap measurement (VGM) model to construct a mixed integer program to solve dynamic network DEA problems. The mixed integer program sets the total numbers of “as-input” and “as-output” equal to the total number of links in the objective function. To obtain the best-practice efficiency, each DMU determines a set of weights for inputs, outputs, and links. The links are played either “as-input” or “as-output.” Input and as-input measures reduce slack, whereas output and as-output measures increase slacks to attain their target on the production frontier.

    Abstract: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive technique for modulating neural plasticity and is considered to have therapeutic potential in neurological disorders. For the purpose of translational neuroscience research, a suitable animal model can be ideal for providing a stable condition for identifying mechanisms that can help to explore therapeutic strategies. Here, we developed a tDCS protocol for modulating motor excitability in anesthetized rats. To examine the responses of tDCS-elicited plasticity, the motor evoked potential (MEP) and MEP input-output (IO) curve elicited by epidural motor cortical electrical stimulus were evaluated at baseline and after 30 min of anodal tDCS or cathodal tDCS. Furthermore, a paired-pulse cortical electrical stimulus was applied to assess changes in the inhibitory network by measuring long-interval intracortical inhibition (LICI) before and after tDCS. In the results, analogous to those observed in humans, the present study demonstrates long-term potentiation- (LTP-) and long-term depression- (LTD-) like plasticity can be induced by tDCS protocol in anesthetized rats. We found that the MEPs were significantly enhanced immediately after anodal tDCS at 0.1 mA and 0.8 mA and remained enhanced for 30 min. Similarly, MEPs were suppressed immediately after cathodal tDCS at 0.8 mA and lasted for 30 min. No effect was noted on the MEP magnitude under sham tDCS stimulation. Furthermore, the IO curve slope was elevated following anodal tDCS and presented a trend toward diminished slope after cathodal tDCS. No significant differences in the LICI ratio of pre- to post-tDCS were observed. These results indicated that developed tDCS schemes can produce consistent, rapid, and controllable electrophysiological changes in corticomotor excitability in rats. This newly developed tDCS animal model could be useful to further explore mechanical insights and may serve as a translational platform bridging human and animal studies, establishing new therapeutic strategies for neurological disorders.

    Abstract: Carotid stenting is an effective treatment of choice in terms of treating ischemic stroke patients with concomitant carotid stenosis. Though computed tomography perfusion scan has been recognized as a standard tool to monitor/follow up this group of patients, not everyone could endure due to underlying medical illness. In contrast, carotid duplex is a noninvasive assessment tool and could track patient clinical condition in real time. In this study we found that “resistance index” of the carotid ultrasound could detect flow changes before and after the stenting procedure, thus having great capacity to replace the role of computed tomography perfusion exam.

    Abstract: The chaotic time series can be expanded to the multidimensional space by phase space reconstruction, in order to reconstruct the dynamic characteristics of the original system. It is difficult to obtain complete phase space for chaotic time series, as a result of the inconsistency of phase space reconstruction. This paper presents an idea of subspace approximation. The chaotic time series prediction based on the phase space reconstruction can be considered as the subspace approximation problem in different neighborhood at different time. The common static neural network approximation is suitable for a trained neighborhood, but it cannot ensure its generalization performance in other untrained neighborhood. The subspace approximation of neural network based on the nonlinear extended Kalman filtering (EKF) is a dynamic evolution approximation from one neighborhood to another. Therefore, in view of incomplete phase space, due to the chaos phase space reconstruction, we put forward subspace adaptive evolution approximation method based on nonlinear Kalman filtering. This method is verified by multiple sets of wind speed prediction experiments in Wulong city, and the results demonstrate that it possesses higher chaotic prediction accuracy.

    Abstract: Objectives. The diagnosis of leukemia relies very much on the results of bone marrow examinations, which is never generally performed in routine physical examination. In many rural areas even community hospitals and primary care clinics, the lack of hematological specialist and facility does not allow a definite diagnosis of leukemia. Thus, there will be a significant benefit if machine learning (ML) models could help early predict leukemia using preliminary blood test data in a routine physical examination in community hospitals to save time before a definite diagnosis. Methods. We collected the routine physical examination data of 1230 newly diagnosed leukemia patients and 1300 healthy people. We trained and tested 3 machine learning (ML) models including linear support vector machine (LSVM), random forest (RF), and XGboost models. We not only examined the accordance between model results and statistical analysis of the input data but also examined the consistency of model accuracy scores and relative importance order of model factors with regard to different input data sets and different model arguments to check the applicability of both the models and the input data. Results. Generally, the RF and XGboost models give more identical, consistent, and robust relative importance order of factors that is also accordant with the statistical analysis, while the LSVM gives much different and nonsense orders for different inputs. Results of the RF and XGboost models show that (1) generally, the models achieve accuracy scores above 0.9, indicating effective identification of leukemia, and (2) the top three factors that contribute most to the identification of leukemia include red blood cell (RBC), hematocrit (HCT), and white blood cell (WBC), while the other factors contribute relatively less. Conclusions. This study shows a feasible case example for early identification of leukemia using routine physical examination data with the assistance of ML models, which can be conveniently, cheaply, and widely applied in community hospitals or primary care clinics to save time before definite diagnosis; however, more studies are still needed to validate the applicability of more ML models to a larger variety of input data sets.

    Abstract: Whine noise from the electric powertrain system of electric vehicles, including electromagnetic noise and gear-meshing noise, significantly affects vehicle comfort and has been getting growing concern. In order to identify and avoid whine problems as early as possible in the powertrain development process, this paper presents a vibration and noise simulation methodology for the electric powertrain system of vehicles under speed-varying operating conditions. The electromagnetic forces on the stator teeth of the motor and the bearing forces on the gearbox for several constant-speed operating conditions are obtained first by electromagnetic field simulation and multi-body dynamic simulation, respectively. Order forces for the speed-varying operating condition are generated by interpolation between the obtained forces, before they are applied on the mechanical model whose natural modes have been calibrated in advance by tested modes. The whine noise radiated from the powertrain is then obtained based on acoustic boundary element analysis. The simulated bearing forces indicate that the overlooking of the motor torque ripple does not result in significant loss in simulation accuracy of electromagnetic noise. The simulation results and tested data show good consistency, with the relative frequency deviation of local peaks being less than 8% and the error of the average sound pressure level (SPL) being mostly below 10 dB (A).

    Abstract: An engineering change orders design using multiple variable linear programming for VLSI design is presented in this paper. This approach addresses the main issues of resource between spare cells and target cells. We adopt linear programming technique to plan and balance the spare cells and target cells to meet the new specification according to logic transformation. The proposed method solves the related problem of resource for ECO problems and provides a well solution. The scheme shows new concept to manage the spare cells to meet possible target cells for ECO research.
