    Abstract: With the growing popularity of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the world and the increasing awareness of intellectual property protection, the number of TCM patent application is growing year by year. TCM patents contain rich medical, legal, and economic information. Effective text mining of TCM patents is of great theoretical and practical significance (e.g., the R & D of new medicines, patent infringement litigation, and patent acquisition). Named entity recognition (NER) is a fundamental task in natural language processing and a crucial step before indepth analysis of TCM patent. In this paper, a method combining Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory neural network with Conditional Random Field (BiLSTM-CRF) is proposed to automatically recognize entities of interest (i.e., herb names, disease names, symptoms, and therapeutic effects) from the abstract texts of TCM patents. By virtue of the capabilities of deep learning methods, the semantic information in the context can be learned without feature engineering. Experiments show that the BiLSTM-CRF-based method provides superior performance in comparison with various baseline methods.

    Abstract: Dental mesenchymal stem cells (DMSCs) are crucial in tooth development and periodontal health, and their multipotential differentiation and self-renewal ability play a critical role in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Methylation modifications could promote the appropriate biological behavior by postsynthetic modification of DNA or protein and make the organism adapt to developmental and environmental prompts by regulating gene expression without changing the DNA sequence. Methylation modifications involved in DMSC fate include DNA methylation, RNA methylation, and histone modifications, which have been proven to exert a significant effect on the regulation of the fate of DMSCs, such as proliferation, self-renewal, and differentiation potential. Understanding the regulation of methylation modifications on the behavior and the immunoinflammatory responses involved in DMSCs contributes to further study of the mechanism of methylation on tissue regeneration and inflammation. In this review, we briefly summarize the key functions of histone methylation, RNA methylation, and DNA methylation in the differentiation potential and self-renewal of DMSCs as well as the opportunities and challenges for their application in tissue regeneration and disease therapy.

    Abstract: Objective . To compare the clinical efficacy and complications which obtained foraminoplasty at the tip or base of the superior articular process (SAP) for the patients with lateral recess stenosis treated by percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD). Methods . Between January 2015 and January 2016, 156 patients of lumbar disc herniation accompanying with lateral recess stenosis were treated with PELD in five tertiary hospitals and fulfilled the 2-year follow-up. Among them, 78 patients obtained a foraminoplasty at the tip of SAP (group A), and foraminoplasty at the base of SAP was performed in the other 78 cases (group B). Clinical efficacy was evaluated using the visual analog scale (VAS) score for back and leg pain, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) score. The intervals of follow-up were scheduled at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years after surgery. Results . Mean operative duration is shorter in group B (55 versus 61 min, P = 0.047). Only one case belonged to group A could not tolerate the neural irritation and required conversion to an open procedure. During the surgery, no dura tears, cauda equina syndrome, or infections were observed. 5 patients experienced transient dysesthesia located at the exiting nerve in group A, while no cases complained dysesthesia in group B. 2 cases who suffered temporary motor weakness all belonged to group A. A total of 5 cases obtained a revision surgery after recurrence in the follow-up, in which 3 patients belonged to group A. Compared to the preoperative data, significant improvements in VAS scores of low back pain and sciatica, ODI, and SF-36 PCS and MC were observed in the follow-up, respectively (P 〈 0.05, respectively). However, no statistical difference was observed at all time-points after surgery between these two groups (P 〉 0.05, respectively). Conclusions . For the patients of LDH accompanying with lateral recess stenosis, compared with the routine foraminoplasty at the tip of SAP, our modified foraminoplastic technique does not only change place of foraminoplasty to the base of SAP but also simplified puncture process in transforaminal PELD. Although there was no significant difference in symptom relief, the modified foraminoplasty showed the advantages in decreasing the incidence of postoperative neural dysfunction and reducing operation time.

    Abstract: Discontinuity investigation and characterization onsite is a labor-dependent work because current techniques cannot precisely handle multiple discontinuity identifications automatically under different work conditions. This paper proposes the multi-CrackNet which enables us to identify and segment linear discontinuities (joints and cracks) for random types of rock surface. A modified feature extraction network called the multiscale feature fusion pyramid network (MFFPN) has been developed based on FPN to capture and fuse more sensitive texture features of cracks across different types of background. With the help of a new training scheme by setting up 3 stages of training to simulate the human-based learning process, the established model can learn more features steadily and robustly from well-labelled databases. Additionally, a hybrid pixel-level quantification method is proposed to automatically compute the length, width, and inclination of cracks. Results show that the proposed method can achieve a detection accuracy of 87.1% for 1 to 9 sets of cracks on the rock surface across different types of rock. Case studies in Anshan West are provided to verify the reliability and accuracy of our method in macrolinear discontinuity identification and quantification, which sees great potentials in site investigation by saving a large amount of labor force.

    Abstract: Plastic products are wildly used in human life. Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) is an essential additive in plastic manufacturing and is used as plasticizer for many products including plastic food packaging. DEHP is a teratogenic compound and can cause potent reproductive toxicity. DEHP can also cause liver damage, peroxisome proliferation, and carcinogenesis. DEHP is also strongly associated with peptic ulcers and gastric cancer; however, the underlying effect and mechanism of DEHP on the gastrointestinal tract are not entirely clear. The oral infection route of H. pylori parallels the major ingestion route of DEHP into the human body. Therefore, we wanted to study the effect of DEHP and H. pylori exposure on the human gastric epithelial cell line, AGS (gastric adenocarcinoma). The viability of the AGS cell line was significantly lower in 80  μ M-DEHP and H. pylori (MOI = 100 : 1) coexposure than DEHP or H. pylori alone. DEHP and H. pylori coexposure also induced caspase-3 activation, and increased Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and DNA fragmentation in AGS cells. These results indicate that DEHP can enhance H. pylori cytotoxicity and induce gastric epithelial cell apoptosis. Therefore, it is possible that DEHP and H. pylori coexposure might enhance the disruption of the gastric mucosa integrity and potentially promote the pathogenesis of gastric carcinogenesis.

    Abstract: Aim. To evaluate the urinary continence (UC), erectile function, and cancer control obtained following robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) and laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) for intermediate- and high-risk localized prostate cancer (PCa). Materials and Methods. 232 patients bearing intermediate- and high-risk localized PCa were enrolled in this study. Perioperative, functional, and oncological outcomes were analyzed after applying the propensity score matched method. Results. Within the matched cohort, the RARP group was corrected with a significantly shorter mean operative time than the LRP group ( p   〈  0.001). Patients in the RARP arm were also at a lower risk of ≤ Grade II complications than those in the LRP group ( p  = 0.036). Meanwhile, the proportions of transfusion and ≥ Grade II complications in the RARP group were similar to those in the LRP group ( p  = 0.192 and p  = 1.000, respectively). No significant differences regarding the rates of pT3 disease and positive surgical margin existed between the two groups. RARP versus LRP tended to a significantly higher percentage of UC recovery within the follow-up period. Significant differences were also found between the RARP and LRP arms in terms of erectile function at postoperative 6 months and the last follow-up ( p  = 0.013 and p  = 0.009, respectively). Statistical comparability in biochemical recurrence-free survival was observed between the two groups ( p  = 0.228). Conclusions. For the surgical management of intermediate- and high-risk localized PCa, RARP tended to a lower risk of ≤ Grade II complications and superior functional preservation without cancer control being compromised than LRP.

    Abstract: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production is involved in the mechanism of action of a number of drugs, but the biological effects of ROS remain to be clarified. Furthermore, ferroptosis involves iron-dependent ROS production that may be derived from ferritinophagy; however, the association between ferroptosis and ferritinophagy has not been fully established. The present study demonstrated that dithiocarbamate derivatives (iron chelators) exhibited antineoplastic properties involving ferritinophagy induction, but whether the underlying mechanisms involved ferroptosis was unknown. To gain insight into the underlying mechanism, a dithiocarbamate derivative, 2-pyridylhydrazone dithiocarbamate s-acetic acid (PdtaA), was prepared. An MTT assay demonstrated that PdtaA inhibited proliferation involving ROS production ( I C 50 = 23.0 ± 1.5  μM for HepG2 cells). A preliminary mechanistic study revealed that PdtaA induced both apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. Notably, PdtaA also induced ferroptosis via downregulation of GPx4 and xCT, which was first reported for a dithiocarbamate derivative. Moreover, these cellular events were associated with ROS production. To explore the origin of ROS, expression of the ferritinophagy-related genes, ferritin, and nuclear receptor coactivator (NCOA4) were measured. Immunofluorescence and western blotting analysis indicated that PdtaA-induced ferritinophagy may contribute to ROS production. To investigate the role of ferritinophagy, autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenin or genetic knockdown of NCOA4 was employed to inhibit ferritinophagy, which significantly neutralized the action of PdtaA in both apoptosis and ferroptosis. Taken together, PdtaA-induced cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and ferroptosis were associated with ferritinophagy.

    Abstract: The forming of micro or mesocracks on rock surfaces is a symptom and precursor of the degradation of deep surrounding rocks under excavation. However, the direct detection or observation of these tiny developed cracks is not practical due to the limitation of current instruments which can only capture and recognize macrocracks. Therefore, many indirect detection ways are proposed to acquire some precautional signals and hereby forestall damage and failure of surrounding rocks. Infrared radiation (IRR) monitoring is one of the frequently used technologies. Current thermography derived from IRR can capture all temperature changes including the surrounding environment; this may influence the on-site judgement due to uncertainty or blur of generated temperature images. This paper proposes the “pseudothermography” under the true triaxial compressive test by combining the infrared radiation data and the heat diffusion theory. Our method evenly selects 25 small regions on the observed rock surface and uses the data obtained from these regions to derive the global temperature field which contains no uncertainty. By comparing our method with the real temperature field, the deduced diffusion model proposed in this paper can relatively reflect the real crack initiation under increasing loading. The experiment result proves that the attempt for the application of heat diffusion law is feasible to indirectly reflect the formation of micro and mesocracks and, ultimately, foresee the failure of the surrounding rock.
