Abstract: This study compared three techniques for scoring a biographical information blank (horizontal per cent method, vertical percent method, and rare re sponse weighting) against various criteria for field sales representatives. The comparisons were cross- validated over five consecutive time periods. The re sults showed that the rare weighting technique sig nificantly predicted criterion group membership better than chance. Neither the horizontal nor ver tical percent methods predicted criterion group membership better than chance. Based on predic tive efficiency, the rare weighting technique was found to be superior to the other two techniques.

Abstract: α-Lipoic acid (LA) has been shown to offer protection against ischemia–reperfusion injury (IRI) in multiple organ systems. N-[(R)-1,2-dithiolane-3-pentanoyl]-L-glutamyl-L-alanine (CMX-2043), a novel analogue of LA, was studied as part of a preclinical development program intended to identify safe and efficacious drug candidates for prevention or reduction in myocardial IRI. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of CMX-2043 in an animal model of myocardial IRI and to establish effective dosing conditions. CMX-2043 or placebo was administered at different doses, routes, and times in male Sprague-Dawley rats subjected to 30-minute left coronary artery ligation. Fluorescent microsphere injection defined the area at risk (AR). Animals were euthanized 24 hours after reperfusion, and the hearts were excised, sectioned, and stained with triphenyltetrazolium. Cytoprotective effectiveness was determined by comparing the unstained myocardial infarction zone (MI) to the ischemic AR. The reduction in the MI–AR ratio was used as the primary measure of drug efficacy relative to placebo injections. Treatment with CMX-2043 reduced myocardial IRI as measured by the MI–AR ratio and the incidence of arrhythmia. The compound was effective when administered by injection, both before and during the ischemic injury and at reperfusion. The most efficacious dose was that administered 15 minutes prior to the ischemic event and resulted in a 36% ( P 〈 .001) reduction in MI–AR ratio compared to vehicle control.

Abstract: Job evaluation instruments have recently been the subject of a number of critical reviews. In these reviews, job evaluation methods have been criticized for sex bias in the selection and weighting of factors. The present work investigated whether males and females differed in their ratings of importance on ten job evaluation factors and whether different weighting techniques would result in different wage structures. The results indicated that rater gender explained little of the variation in the ratings of the job evaluation factors.

Abstract: To bridge the gap between computerized testing and information-processing-based measurement, a battery of computerized information-processing-based ability and preference measures was developed. The information-processing and preference measures and a battery of paper-and-pencil tests were administered to 64 college students. Although the internal-consistency reliabilities of the computerized information-processing measures were adequate, test-retest reliabilities were lower than desirable for ability measures. The computerized information-processing measures possessed moderate convergent validity but had low correlations with traditional paper-and-pencil measures. Of the computerized preference measures, the most promising results were obtained with the Stimulus Pace measure. A major problem with the use of the computerized information-processing measures in applied settings would be administration time, as the battery took approximately 4 hours. In addition, problems with the stability of results over time and substantial practice effects suggest that even longer testing sessions would be required to obtain reliable measures. Although information-processing measures of short-term memory have, at best, low correlations with traditional intelligence tests, their ability to predict real-world tasks has yet to be sufficiently researched.

Abstract: A new method for determining individual differ ences in information processing was developed and illustrated. The measure, Visual Selective Attention, was constructed according to the parameters and specifications of a standardized measure of auditory selective attention. Emphasis was placed upon es tablishing the relationship of this new measure with traditional measures of information processing (i.e., perceptual style and selective attention). The results provided initial evidence for the reliability and val idity of the new measure. Applications for Visual Selective Attention and interpretation of the find ings are discussed in view of the current state of the information-processing literature. Implications for additional research focus upon the practical appli cations of the new measure.

Abstract: Correction of correlation coefficients that have ari sen from range restricted populations is commonly suggested and practiced in research on testing and measurement. Until recently, that research has oper ated under two important limitations. First, the major ity of the research has dealt with range restriction on one variable only, and second, the correction formulas have assumed that the variance of the variable(s) in the unrestricted population was known. This article presents a method for estimating such corrections from the data in the restricted sample and applies the method to a recently developed approximation for re striction on both X and Y. The procedure is evaluated and found to produce sufficiently accurate results to be useful in many practical range restriction settings.

Abstract: Recently developed procedures correct range restricted correlations with information obtained solely from the restricted samples. However, these procedures can be used only when the type of range restriction that has occurred is known. A sample-based classification procedure was developed in an attempt to address this limitation. This new procedure was found to be relatively accurate and powerful in determining the appropriate range restriction correction.

Abstract: An extension has been made of past research on the theory of "psychological perspective" (Ostrom and Upshaw, 1968) that emphasizes the concept of rating scale calibration in attitude measurement. Perspective theory may hold implications for attitude surveys in that differences in attitude across groups or individuals may be diluted, exaggerated, or real depending on differences in perspective when completing self-ratings of attitude on a graphic scale. A second implication, however, is that scales may become recalibrated transiently, as in the classic contrast effect. A conservative test of this second implication of the model was provided to investigate whether the use of simple graphic rating scales in attitude measurement may be complicated by this type of transient scale shift. Hypothesized initial shifts and their temporal decay were investigated. However, the data did not support the short term recalibration effect. Overall, the data supplemented past research that supports the use of graphic rating scales as valid and reliable measures of attitude. It is also suggested that in some situations, a single graphic rating may be effectively substituted for longer and more sophisticated scaling techniques.

Abstract: The study was designed to test the construct validity of extraversion-introversion and to explore the nature of the concept as measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI). The psychometric properties of the MBTI have been inadequately studied, whereas those of the EPI have been investigated extensively. Responses of 840 subjects to the two measures were submitted in toto to factor analysis. Of the seven factors retained, three measures of extraversion appeared: Factor 2 (a sociability component), Factor 4 (an impulsivity/non-planning component), and Factor 7 (a liveliness/risk-taking/jocularity component). Findings supported the view of extraversion-introversion as a complex construct (Eysenck and Eysenck, 1977; Guilford, 1977; Howarth, 1976). The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator-Extraversion Introversion (MBTI-EI) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator-Judging Perceiving (MBTI-JP), scales were found, surprisingly, to be factorially valid measures of impulsivity/non-planning. Implications and suggested research are discussed.

Abstract: Regression analysis has played an important role in social science research and litigation involving sex discrimination in pay. Seberhagen is typical of those researchers who have conducted a regression analysis and reached a conclusion that there was discrimination against females in pay. He concluded that 70% of the male-female pay differential was due to sex discrimination. An analysis of his regression procedures, identification of variables, definition of discrimination, and a micro analysis of individual cases indicated that little confidence could be placed in Seberhagen's conclusion of discrimination in compensation.
