Abstract:
According to the state of the art, it is not possible to predict the noise characteristics of an electric powertrain with satisfactory accuracy. Structural dynamic modeling and particularly damping modeling pose a challenge. This is due to the various mechanisms, some of which are nonlinear, that contribute to damping. Material damping, sound radiation, and joint damping have to be mentioned, among others. In this paper, modal damping ratios suitable for a possible EMBS are calculated. This is done by using aluminum bodies as an example and examining the contributions through material damping and sound radiation independently. Challenges of damping measurement for validation are addressed in detail. The error caused by modeling a nonproportional system by means of proportional damping is assessed using a calculated FRF. The method is applicable for orthotropic materials and can, in principle, also incorporate joint damping.
