Abstract: Dissolved oxygen (DO) is one of the main prerequisites to protect amphibian biological systems and to support powerful administration choices. This research investigated the applicability of Shannon’s entropy theory and correlation in obtaining the combination of the optimum inputs, and then the abstracted input variables were used to develop three novel intelligent hybrid models, namely, NF-GWO (neuro-fuzzy with grey wolf optimizer), NF-SC (subtractive clustering), and NF-FCM (fuzzy c-mean), for estimation of DO concentration. Seven different input combinations of water quality variables, including water temperature (TE), specific conductivity (SC), turbidity (Tu), and pH, were used to develop the prediction models at two stations in California. The performance of proposed models for DO estimation was assessed using statistical metrics and visual interpretation. The results revealed the better performance of NF-GWO for all input combinations than other models where its performance was improved by 24.2–66.2% and 14.9–31.2% in terms of CC (correlation coefficient) and WI (Willmott index) compared to standalone NF for different input combinations. Additionally, the MAE (mean absolute error) and RMSE (root mean absolute error) of the NF model were reduced using the NF-GWO model by 9.9–46.0% and 8.9–47.5%, respectively. Therefore, NF-GWO with all water quality variables as input can be considered the optimal model for predicting DO concentration of the two stations. In contrast, NF-SC performed worst for most of the input combinations. The violin plot of NF-GWO-predicted DO was found most similar to the violin plot of observed data. The dissimilarity with the observed violin was found high for the NF-FCM model. Therefore, this study promotes the hybrid intelligence models to predict DO concentration accurately and resolve complex hydro-environmental problems.

Abstract: Temperature rise is a concern for future agriculture in different regions of the globe. This study aimed to reveal the future changes and variabilities in minimum temperature (Tmin) and maximum temperature (Tmax) in the monthly, seasonal, and annual scale over Bangladesh using 40 General Circulation Models (GCMs) of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) for two radiative concentration pathways (RCPs, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). The statistical downscaling climate model (SimCLIM) was used for downscaling and to ensemble temperature projections (Tmax and Tmin) for the near (2021–2060) and far (2071–2100) periods compared to the base period (1986–2005). Multi-model ensemble (MME) exhibited increasing Tmax and Tmin for all the timescales for all future periods and RCPs. Sen’s slope (SS) analysis showed the highest increase in Tmax and Tmin in February and relatively less increase in July and August. The mean annual Tmax over Bangladesh would increase by 0.61°C and 1.75°C in the near future and 0.91°C and 3.85°C in the far future, while the mean annual Tmin would rise by 0.65°C and 1.85°C in the near future and 0.96°C and 4.07°C in the far future, for RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, respectively. The northern and northwestern parts of the country would experience the highest rise in Tmax and Tmin, which have traditionally been exposed to temperature extremes. In contrast, the southeastern coastal region would experience the least rise in temperature. A higher increase in Tmin than Tmax was detected for all timescales, signifying a future decrease in the diurnal temperature range (DTR). The highest increase in Tmax and Tmin will be in winter compared to other seasons for both the periods and RCPs. The spatial variability of Tmax and Tmin changes can be useful for the long-term planning of the country.

Abstract: Public transport usage in Malaysia is showing a downward trend. Despite major improvements implemented as well as intended for public transport, the bus user satisfaction is constantly on a decline. This study investigated qualitative differences between bus users and operators based on 11 pre-selected quality attributes for an intercity travel in Malaysia with a predominant public transport mode– the Bus. The perceptions were measured via responses on a likert scale to establish differences. Perceptual, socio-economic and trip data were collected using questionnaire from bus users and operators on a pre-selected route-Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur (JB-KL). Analyses used statistical tools particularly correlation analyses, step-wise multiple regression analyses, Mann Whitney test methods and Wilcoxon test. Quadrant analyses established relationship between relative importance and satisfaction from quality attributes. Results indicate significant correlation differences in both groups on attributes viz. ‘bus fares’ ‘travel comfort’, ‘travel convenience’, ‘ticket availability’ and the ‘facilities at the bus terminal’. Study revealed significant gaps in the understanding about the composition of bus service-quality by operators. Alternate hypothesis were rejected as bus users and operators reveal significant perception differences on quality attributes–‘bus fares’, ‘travel comfort’ and ‘bus staff behaviour’. The satisfaction levels of four extremely important quality attributes viz. ‘bus fares’, ‘travel comfort’, ‘bus staff behaviour’ and ‘bus user security’ were found low to average. Similarly major deterrents of the bus patronage were appraised. In this endeavour, the research exploited knowledge of perceptions to suggest quality attributes that are necessary to improve public transport ridership and consequently the modal share of public transport in Malaysia.

Abstract: Downscaling Global Circulation Model (GCM) output is important in order to understand the present climate as well as future climate changes at local scale. In this study, Radial basis function (RBF) neural network was used to downscale the mean monthly rainfall in an arid coastal region located in Baluchistan province of Pakistan. The RBF model was used to downscale monthly rainfall from National Center for environmental prediction (NCEP) reanalysis dataset at four observation stations in the area. The potential predictors were selected using principal component analysis of NCEP variables at grid points located around the study area. Power transformation method was used to remove the bias in the prediction. The results showed that the RBF model was able to establish a good relation between NCEP predictors and local rainfall. The power transformation method was also found to perform well to correct errors in prediction. It can be concluded that RBF and power transformation methods are reliable and effective methods for downscaling rainfall in an arid coastal region.

Abstract: Road traffic accidents are often found to follow some spatial and temporal patterns as the factors that influence road accident changes with space and time. Knowledge on spatial and temporal variability of accident can be helpful for optimizing resources in order to improve traffic security management. The objective of the present study is to assess the spatial and temporal variation in the incidence of road traffic accidents and casualties across the states of peninsular Malaysia. Recent trends in number of accidents, casualties and fatalities are also accessed using non-parametric statistical method. The results show more accidents but lower fatalities in more urbanized and developed states, and lower accident levels but more serious fatalities in less urbanized or developed states of Peninsular Malaysia. Trend analysis reveals increasing number of accidents, but decreasing number casualties in recent years in most of the states of Peninsular Malaysia. The temporal analysis shows clear seasonal pattern in accident in some states of Malaysia. Most of the accidents are found to occur in festive month of Hari Raya Puasa festival followed by the month of mid-year school holiday. It is expected that the finding of the study will help in making recommendations in order to improve road safety and reduce road traffic accident in Malaysia.

Abstract: Climate change is very likely to cause a sharp increase in temperature, which in turn is likely to affect atmospheric water storage, and thereby the magnitudes, frequencies and intensities of rainfall. The road environment, including the weather factors is one of the major causes of accident across the world. Therefore, it is very certain that climate change induced changes in weather factors will affect road safety, if proper adaptation measures are not taken. The major objective of this article is to review the existing literatures on the influence of climatic variables on road accident in order to assess the possible impacts of climate change on road safety in Malaysia. The analysis of exiting literatures reveals that most imminent and certain impacts of climate change on road safety will be due to increase of temperature and rainfall related extremes. However, the impacts may not be very high in Malaysia due to moderate changes of those extremes over a long time. Any potential risk would be possible to mitigate by educating the people on possible impacts of climatic extremes on road environment and motivating them to change their driving behaviour during extreme weather events.
