Abstract: Background: Only little evidence is available on disorientation, one of the most challenging symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of disorientation in older age in association with the level of cognitive status, personal characteristics, and life events. Methods: Three longitudinal population-based cohort studies on cognitive health of elderly adults were harmonized (LEILA 75 + , AgeCoDe/AgeQualiDe, AgeMooDe). Participants who completed a baseline and at least one follow-up assessment of cognitive functioning and who did not have stroke, Parkinson’s disease, atherosclerosis, kidney disease, and/or alcoholism were included in the analysis (n = 2135, 72.6% female, mean age 80.2 years). Data was collected in standardized interviews and questionnaires with the participant, a proxy informant, and the participant’s general practitioner. Results: Making three errors in the MMSE other than in the questions on orientation (MMSEwo) came with a probability of 7.8% for disorientation, making ten errors with a probability of 88.9%. A lower MMSEwo score (HR 0.75, CI 95 0.71–0.79, p  〈  0.001), older age (HR 1.11, CI 95 1.08–1.14, p  〈  0.001), and living in a nursing home (HR 1.64, CI 95 1.02–2.64, p = 0.042) were associated with incident disorientation. Impairments in walking (OR 2.41, CI 95 1.16–4.99, p = 0.018) were associated with a greater probability for prevalent disorientation. None of the life events were significant. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that disorientation is primarily associated with cognitive status. Regular walking activities might possibly reduce the risk for disorientation but further research is necessary.

Abstract: Aluminium alloy AA6016 was accumulative roll bonded up to eight cycles in order to produce an ultrafine-grained microstructure. The formability of these sheets was investigated by means of bending tests. Furthermore the influence of a local laser heat treatment at the bending edge is observed. The strength of the UFG samples is increased by a factor of around two compared to the conventionally grained T4 condition which also results in up to 50 % higher punch forces needed for bending of ARB processed samples. An anisotropic bending behaviour is observed. By applying a tailored laser heat treatment along the bending edge prior to the bending tests a local recrystallization and recovery at the deformation zone of the samples is achieved. Thus, ductility is increased locally whereby bending to an angle of 80° is possible with lower forming forces compared to the non-heat treated specimens. The results are compared to previous studies on mechanical properties and formability investigations of ARB processed AA6016.

Abstract: The forming limit diagram (FLD) is at the moment the most important method for the prediction of failure within sheet metal forming operations. Key idea is the detection of the onset of necking in dependency of different sample geometry. Whereas the standardized evaluation methods provides very robust and reliable results for conventional materials like deep drawing steels, the determined forming limits for modern light materials are often too conservative due to the different failure behavior. Therefore, within this contribution a new and innovative approach for the identification of the onset of necking will be presented. By using a pattern recognition-based approach in combination with an optical strain measurement system the complete strain history during the test can be evaluated. The principal procedure as well as the first promising results are presented and discussed.

Abstract: In 2017, ScanPyramids project (www.scanpyramids.org) published a paper in Nature (Morishima et al., 2017) revealing the discovery of a big void (ScanPyramids Big Void BV) observed with nuclear emulsion films (Muography), it has a cross-section similar to that of the Grand Gallery and a minimum length of 30 meters situated above the Grand Gallery. In addition, a geometrically non-identified void in the Northern Face of the Pyramid (ScanPyramids Northern Face Corridor SP-NFC) was detected as well in 2017 followed by further detailed and focused muography measurements up to 2022 (Morishima and Procureur et al., 2023). ScanPyramids SP-NFC corridor has been investigated in more detail with a wider set of non-destructive techniques. The result of GPR, Ultrasonic and image fusion detected precisely the location and shape of ScanPyramids SP-NFC (Elkarmoty and Rupfle et al.,2023). In this paper, we present overview on the application of Muography, Ground Penetrating Radar, Ultrasonic Tomography, and Electrical Resistivity Tomography on the Chevron of the Great Pyramid where ScanPyramids SPNFC is located behind. The objective of the NDT measurements is to detect the geometry, location, orientation, and extension of ScanPyramids SP-NFC with more than one NDT method. The paper addresses the validity and limitations of each method used providing the limitations of each technique in this particular case study.

Abstract: Since there is a lack of longitudinal studies in this area, our aim was to identify the determinants of persistent frequent attendance in primary care among the oldest old in Germany. Methods Longitudinal data (follow-up wave 7–9) were taken from the multicenter prospective cohort “Study on needs, health service use, costs, and health-related quality of life in a large sample of oldest-old primary care patients (85+)” (AgeQualiDe), covering primary care patients ≥ 85 years (FU7 n = 741, mean age 88.9 years (SD 2.9; 85–100)). Persistent frequent attenders of general practitioner (GP) services (the patients in the top decile of the number of GP consultations in two or more consecutive waves) were our main outcome of interest. Logistic random-effects models were used. Results Our analysis included 1,891 observations (766 individuals). Across three waves, we identified 56 persistent frequent attenders. Results of random-effects logistic regressions showed that the odds of being persistent frequent attender were higher for widowed individuals (OR = 4.57; 95% CI [1.07–19.45]). Moreover, a one-point increase in the frailty score and having one more chronic condition increased the odds of being a persistent frequent attender by 68% (OR =1.68; 95% CI [1.05–2.69] ) and 23% (OR=1.23, 95% CI [1.05–1.44]), respectively. Conclusion Our study stressed the longitudinal association between frailty and widowhood as well as chronic diseases and persistent frequent attendance among the oldest old in Germany.
