Abstract: Acupuncture is an effective adjunctive therapy for chronic stable angina pectoris (CSAP), while the underlying mechanism is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the central pathophysiology of CSAP and explore the mechanism of different acupoint prescriptions for CSAP from the perspective of brain-heart interaction. Methods Thirty-seven CSAP patients and sixty-five healthy subjects (HS) were enrolled, and thirty CSAP patients were divided into two acupoint prescriptions groups (Group A: acupoints on the meridian directly related to the Heart ; Group B: acupoints on the meridian indirectly related to the Heart ). The Magnetic Resonance Imaging data and clinical data were collected at baseline and after treatment. The comparisons of brain spontaneous activity patterns were performed between CSAP patients and HS, as well as between baseline and after treatment in CSAP patients. Then, the changes in resting-state functional connectivity before and after treatment were compared between the two acupoint prescriptions. Results Chronic stable angina pectoris patients manifested higher spontaneous activity on the bilateral calcarine, left middle occipital gyrus, right superior temporal gyrus, and right postcentral gyrus. After acupuncture treatment, the spontaneous activity of the left calcarine, left cuneus, and right orbitofrontal gyrus was decreased. The left calcarine was identified as region-of-interest for functional connectivity analysis. Compared with group B, CSAP patients in group A had significantly increased functional connectivity between left calcarine and the left inferior temporal gyrus/cerebellum crus 1, left hippocampus, left thalamus, and left middle cingulate cortex after treatment. Thresholds for all comparisons were p & lt; 0.05, Gaussian Random Field corrected. Conclusion Regulating the aberrant spontaneous activity of the calcarine might be an underlying mechanism of acupuncture for CSAP. The multi-threaded modulation of functional connectivity between calcarine and multiple pain-related brain regions might be a potential mechanism for better efficacy of acupuncture at points on the meridian directly related to the Heart .

Abstract: Depression is a complex and biologically heterogeneous disorder. Recent studies have shown that central nervous system (CNS) inflammation plays a key role in the development of depression. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced depression-like model in mice is commonly used to studying the mechanisms of inflammation-associated depression and the therapeutic effects of drugs. Numerous LPS-induced depression-like models in mice exist and differ widely in animal characteristics and methodological parameters. Here, we systematically reviewed studies on PubMed from January 2017 to July 2022 and performed cardinal of 170 studies and meta-analyses of 61 studies to support finding suitable animal models for future experimental studies on inflammation-associated depression. Mouse strains, LPS administration, and behavioral outcomes of these models have been assessed. In the meta-analysis, forced swimming test (FST) was used to evaluate the effect size of different mouse strains and LPS doses. The results revealed large effect sizes in ICR and Swiss mice, but less heterogeneity in C57BL/6 mice. For LPS intraperitoneal dose, the difference did not affect behavioral outcomes in C57BL/6 mice. However, in ICR mice, the most significant effect on behavioral outcomes was observed after the injection of 0.5 mg/kg LPS. Our results suggests that mice strains and LPS administration play a key role in the evaluation of behavioral outcomes in such models.

Abstract: The dynamic gesture trajectory recognition results are low accurate and poor real-time due to the problems of occlusion, complex background and fast gesture movement. In this paper, we take advantage of the advantages of machine vision to extract the video keyframes by the three-frame differential method and use the annotation software to produce the dataset. The you only look once 4 (YOLOv4) algorithm is improved to reduce the redundancy of the network structure and enhance the applicability of the feature map for hand gesture recognition. Combined with the Deep-sort real-time tracking feature, the hand motion trajectory is obtained by introducing the epiphenomenal features to effectively avoid the situation that the object is not tracked when it is obscured. To avoid the problem of gradient disappearance during deep network training, the DenseNet-BC-169 network is used to balance the recognition rate and training time for gesture trajectory classification. Compared with FLIXT, the winner of the dynamic gesture recognition challenge, the final results showed a 6.13% improvement in accuracy and video processing with the IsoGD dataset reached 31fps, validating the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract: When we discuss the legacies of Napoleon, it is inevitable to disregard his contribution to global jurisprudence: the French Civil Code of 1804. As Emperor, Napoleon proposed to enhance his military achievements with a comprehensive codification. Although he was not the precedent in doing so, it was him who created the paradigm of all codes that we now consider “modern.” For decades, historians investigating the course of Napoleon’s codification have developed a plausible explanation of its unparalleled significance in the world; that is, it extensively embodies the ideas of the radical French Revolution, which undermined feudal regimes and shaped modern society. However, this argument reflects a common tendency of glossing the Code by adding personal interpretations through modern lenses; it is neither objective nor inaccurate. The first part of this study is largely based on James Gordley’s essay (1994) on the myths of Napoleon’s codification. We will see that ideas expressed in the Code were not as novel to people in the nineteenth century as principles of the Revolution were, because many concepts were proposed by early French writers and framers of Roman law. In the second part of the study, we will investigate the relation between codification and the modern world. We will use Latin America as an instance to illustrate the limitations of the Code due to its relative antiquity. When we combine the conclusions of the two parts, it is plain that the legacy of Napoleon’s Code is often overemphasized in the modern world.

Abstract: Background: The abnormalities in brain function and structure of patients with functional constipation (FC) have been identified using multiple neuroimaging studies and have confirmed the abnormal processing of visceral sensation at the level of the central nervous system (CNS) as an important reason for FC. As an important basis for central information transfer, the role of the white matter (WM) networks in the pathophysiology of FC has not been investigated. This study aimed to explore the topological organization of WM networks in patients with FC and its correlation with clinical variables. Methods and Analysis: In this study, 70 patients with FC and 45 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects (HS) were recruited. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data and clinical variables were acquired from each participant. WM networks were constructed using the deterministic fiber tracking approach, and the global and nodal properties of the WM networks were compared using graph theory analysis between patients with FC and HS. The relationship between the representative nodal characteristics–nodal betweenness and clinical parameters was assessed using partial correlation analysis. Results: Patients with FC showed increased nodal characteristics in the left superior frontal gyrus (orbital part), right middle frontal gyrus (orbital part), and right anterior cingulate and paracingulate ( P & lt; 0.05, corrected for false discovery rate) and decreased nodal characteristics in the left caudate and left thalamus ( P & lt; 0.05, corrected for false discovery rate) compared with HS. The duration of FC was negatively correlated with the nodal betweenness of the left thalamus ( r = −0.354, P = 0.04, corrected for false discovery rate). Conclusion: The results indicated the alternations in WM networks of patients with FC and suggested the abnormal visceral sensation processing in the CNS from the perspective of large-scale brain WM network.
