Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiological characteristics, associated risk factors, and prognostic value of glioma-related epilepsy in patients with diffuse high-grade gliomas (DHGGs) that were diagnosed after the 2016 updated WHO classification was released. METHODS Data from 449 patients with DHGGs were retrospectively collected. Definitive diagnosis was reaffirmed according to the 2016 WHO classification. Seizure outcome was assessed using the Engel classification at 12 months after surgery. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify risk factors associated with preoperative and postoperative glioma-related epilepsy. Lastly, the prognostic value of glioma-related epilepsy was evaluated by Kaplan-Meier and Cox analysis. RESULTS The incidence of glioma-related epilepsy decreased gradually as the malignancy of the tumor increased. Age 〈 45 years (OR 2.601, p 〈 0.001), normal neurological function (OR 3.024, p 〈 0.001), and lower WHO grade (OR 2.028, p = 0.010) were independently associated with preoperative glioma-related epilepsy, while preoperative glioma-related epilepsy (OR 7.554, p 〈 0.001), temporal lobe involvement (OR 1.954, p = 0.033), non–gross-total resection (OR 2.286, p = 0.012), and lower WHO grade (OR 2.130, p = 0.021) were identified as independent predictors of poor seizure outcome. Furthermore, postoperative glioma-related epilepsy, rather than preoperative glioma-related epilepsy, was demonstrated as an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (OR 0.610, p = 0.010). CONCLUSIONS The updated WHO classification seems conducive to reveal the distribution of glioma-related epilepsy in DHGG patients. For DHGG patients with high-risk predictors of poor seizure control, timely antiepileptic interventions could be beneficial. Moreover, glioma-related epilepsy (especially postoperative glioma-related epilepsy) is associated with favorable overall survival.

Abstract: Background: Glioma-related epilepsy (GRE) is the most common presenting sign of patients with diffuse glioma. According to clinical experience, new-onset postoperative seizures can be observed even in patients without preoperative GRE. The current study mainly aimed to explore the risk factors of new-onset postoperative seizures in those patients. In addition, the prognostic value of new-onset postoperative seizures was also discussed. Methods: Data of 313 patients without GRE were retrospectively reviewed. Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test were first performed to compare categorical variables between patients with new-onset postoperative seizures and those without. Subsequently, binary logistic regression analysis was conduct to further assess risk factors of new-onset postoperative seizures. Kaplan-Meier and Cox analysis were used to investigate the prognostic value of new-onset postoperative seizures for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Results: Patients with low-grade tumors ( p = 0.006), isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) mutation ( p = 0.040) or low Ki-67 expression ( p = 0.005) showed a higher incidence of new-onset postoperative seizures. IDH1 mutation was identified as the only independent predictor for new-onset postoperative seizures (OR, 2.075; 95% CI, 1.051–4.098; p = 0.035). Additionally, new-onset postoperative seizure occurrence was demonstrated as an independent predicter of prolonged OS (OR, 0.574; 95% CI, 0.335–0.983; p = 0.043), while younger age, gross total resection, low-grade and IDH1 mutation were independently correlated with prolonged OS and PFS. Conclusions: IDH1 mutation is an independent predictor for new-onset postoperative seizures in patients without preoperative GRE. Moreover, new-onset postoperative seizures can independently predict prolonged OS in those patients. The results of the current study can contribute to improving the individualized management of diffuse glioma.

Abstract: To have a comprehensive understanding of epidemiology and antifungal susceptibilities in pathogenic yeasts, the China Antifungal Resistance Surveillance Trial (CARST-fungi) study was conducted. All yeast isolates were identified by ribosomal DNA sequencing. Antifungal susceptibilities were performed using CLSI M27-A4 broth microdilution method. Sequence and expression level of resistant-related genes in resistant/non-wide-type (NWT) Candida isolates were analyzed. Totally 269 nonduplicate yeast isolates from 261 patients were collected. About half of the yeast isolates (127, 47.2%) were recovered from blood, followed by ascetic fluid (46, 17.1%). C. albicans remained the most prevalent (120, 44.6%), followed by C. parapsilosis complex (50, 18.6%), C. tropicalis (40, 14.9%), and C. glabrata (36, 13.4%). Fourteen (11.7%) C. albicans isolates and 1 (2.0%) C. parapsilosis isolate were resistant/NWT to triazoles. Only 42.5% (17/40) C. tropicalis were susceptible/WT to all the triazoles, with 19 (47.5%) isolates NWT to posaconazole and 8 (20%) cross-resistant to triazoles. Among C. glabrata , 20 (55.6%) and 8 (22.2%) isolates were resistant/NWT to voriconazole and posaconazole, respectively, and 4 (10.3%) isolates were cross-resistant to triazoles. Isavuconazole was the most active triazole against common Candida isolates. Except for 2 isolates of C. glabrata cross-resistant to echinocandins which were also NWT to POS and defined as multidrug-resistant, echinocandins exhibit good activity against common Candida species. All isolates were WT to AMB. For less common species, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa exhibited high MICs to echinocandins and FLC, and 1 isolate of Trichosporon asahii showed high MICs to all the antifungals except AMB. Among triazole-resistant Candida isolates, ERG11 mutations were detected in 10/14 C. albicans and 6/23 C. tropicalis , while 21/23 C. tropicalis showed MDR1 overexpression. Overexpression of CDR1 , CDR2 , and SNQ2 exhibited in 14, 13, and 8 of 25 triazole-resistant C. glabrata isolates, with 5 isolates harboring PDR1 mutations and 2 echinocandins-resistant isolates harboring S663P mutation in FKS2 . Overall, the CARST-fungi study demonstrated that although C. albicans remain the most predominant species, non- C. albicans species accounted for a high proportion. Triazole-resistance is notable among C. tropicalis and C. glabrata . Multidrug-resistant isolates of C. glabrata and less common yeast have been emerging.

Abstract: There is still controversy surrounding the precise characterization of prediabetic population. We aim to identify and examine factors of demographic, behavioral, clinical, and biochemical characteristics, and obesity indicators (anthropometric characteristics and anthropometric prediction equation) for prediabetes according to different definition criteria of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in the Chinese population. Methods A longitudinal study consisted of baseline survey and two follow-ups was conducted, and a pooled data were analyzed. Prediabetes was defined as either impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), or elevated glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) according to the ADA criteria. Robust generalized estimating equation models were used. Results A total of 5,713 (58.42%) observations were prediabetes (IGT, 38.07%; IGT, 26.51%; elevated HbA1c, 23.45%); 9.66% prediabetes fulfilled all the three ADA criteria. Among demographic characteristics, higher age was more evident in elevated HbA1c [adjusted OR (aOR)=2.85]. Female individuals were less likely to have IFG (aOR=0.70) and more likely to suffer from IGT than male individuals (aOR=1.41). Several inconsistency correlations of biochemical characteristics and obesity indicators were detected by prediabetes criteria. Body adiposity estimator exhibited strong association with prediabetes (D10: aOR=4.05). For IFG and elevated HbA1c, the odds of predicted lean body mass exceed other indicators (D10: aOR=3.34; aOR=3.64). For IGT, predicted percent fat presented the highest odds (D10: aOR=6.58). Conclusion Some correlated factors of prediabetes under different criteria differed, and obesity indicators were easily measured for target identification. Our findings could be used for targeted intervention to optimize preventions to mitigate the obviously increased prevalence of diabetes.

Abstract: Herein, we describe a novel bunyavirus, oriental wenrivirus 1 (OWV1), discovered in moribund oriental shrimp ( Penaeus chinensis ) collected from a farm in China in 2016. Like most bunyaviruses, OWV1 particles were enveloped, spherical- to ovoid-shaped, and 80–115 nm in diameter. However, its genome was found to comprise four segments of (-)ssRNA. These included an L RNA segment (6,317 nt) encoding an RNA-directed RNA polymerase (RdRp) of 2,052 aa, an M RNA segment (2,978 nt) encoding a glycoprotein precursor (GPC) of 922 aa, an S1 RNA segment (1,164 nt) encoding a nucleocapsid (N) protein of 243 aa, and an S2 RNA segment (1,382 nt) encoding a putative non-structural (NSs2) protein of 401 aa. All the four OWV1 RNA segments have complementary terminal decanucleotides (5′-ACACAAAGAC and 3′-UGUGUUUCUG) identical to the genomic RNA segments of uukuviruses and similar to those of phleboviruses and tenuiviruses in the Phenuiviridae . Phylogenetic analyses revealed that the RdRp, GPC, and N proteins of OWV1 were closely related to Wēnzhōu shrimp virus 1 (WzSV-1) and Mourilyan virus (MoV) that infect black tiger shrimp ( P. monodon ). Phylogenetic analyses also suggested that OWV1 could be classified into a second, yet to be established, species of the Wenrivirus genus in the Phenuiviridae . These wenriviruses also clustered with Wenling crustacean virus 7 from shrimps and bunya-like brown spot virus from white-clawed crayfish. Of note there were no homologs of the NSs2 of OWV1 and MoV/WzSV-1 in GenBank, and whether other crustacean phenuiviruses also possess a similar S2 RNA segment warrants further investigation. In addition, we established a TaqMan probe-based reverse-transcription quantitative PCR method for detection of OWV1, and it was detected as 1.17 × 10 2 —1.90 × 10 7 copies/ng-RNA in gills of 23 out of 32 P. chinensis samples without an obvious gross sign. However, the discovery of OWV1 highlights the expanding genomic diversity of bunyaviruses.

Abstract: This study aimed to assess the relationship between the dietary intake of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and its subtypes (C4:0, C6:0, C8:0, C10:0, C12:0, C14:0, C16:0, and C18:0) and hypertension. Design, participants, and methods Adults aged 20 years and older based used the U.S. Health and Nutrition Survey (1999–2018) were used as participants. Two averages of 24 h dietary recall data were obtained for weight-adjusted continuous cross-sectional analysis. Two 24-h recall interview data means were obtained for weight-adjusted continuous cross-sectional analysis. A logistic regression model was used to estimate the weighted odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) for hypertension. Results The study included 7,222 respondents over 20 years of age with a hypertension prevalence of 23.2% and a significant difference in the dietary intake of carbohydrates among patients with hypertension. Dietary intake of nutrients was more in men than in women with hypertension. After adjusting for confounders, adjusting for nutrients, and reducing covariance among nutrients, the OR (95% CI) for women’s dietary intake of SFAs, C14:0, C16:0, C18:0 fourth quartile, and C14:0 third quartile were 0.57 (0.34, 0.95), 0.57 (0.34, 0.95), 0.57 (0.34, 0.95), 0.57 (0.34, 0.95), and 0.57 (0.34, 0.95), respectively, which may be a risk factor for hypertension. In older (≥65, years) respondents, the OR (95% CI) for dietary intake of SFAs, C4:0, C14:0, C16:0 fourth quartile, and C12:0 third quartile were 0.42 (0.21, 0.86), 0.46 (0.22, 0.95), 0.39 (0.18, 0.85), 0.38 (0.17, 0.84), and 0.45 (0.20, 0.99), respectively, which may be a protective factor for hypertension. Conclusion The study was based on the American Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and a strong correlation was found between dietary intake of SFAs, C14:0, C16:0, and C18:0 and hypertension in women (dietary intake of SFAs, C4:0, C12:0, C14:0, and C16:0) and middle-aged and older adults (dietary intake of SFAs, C4:0, C12:0, C14:0, and C16:0). In addition, dietary nutrient intake should be carefully selected for the rational prevention of hypertension.

Abstract: The sloping silty sediments in estuarine deltas are frequently affected by extreme storms, and they are prone to liquefaction instability. The unstable liquefied sediments of the slopes can subsequently form a sediment gravity flow (SGF), which can seriously endanger offshore engineering facilities. To better understand the characteristics and mechanism of wave-induced liquefied sediment gravity flow (WILSGF), a flume experiment was conducted to reproduce the formation, movement, and deposition processes of the WILSGF and analyze their controlling factors using natural silty sediment samples collected from the Yellow River Delta in China. The results show that the mass of the WILSGF comes from the sediment in the liquefied layer, and the movement of the WILSGF in these experiments was significantly affected by the wave orbital velocity and the relative outflow position. At the initial stage of the formation of the WILSGF, the phase and amplitude of the WILSGF were the same as those of waves, and the maximum velocity of the WILSGF reached 2.39 cm/s. The velocity of the WILSGF decreased continuously with the downward evolution of the liquefaction interface. When the liquefaction depth reached its maximum value, there was no WILSGF. We also found that the median particle size of the WILSGF was greater than that of the original seabed due to wave-induced seabed coarsening and the intrusion of ambient water. This study has guiding significance for in-depth understanding and prediction of the geological hazards caused by WILSGF.

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI), which has been used to diagnose diabetic retinopathy (DR), may impact future medical and ophthalmic practices. Therefore, this study explored AI’s general applications and research frontiers in the detection and gradation of DR. Methods Citation data were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection database (WoSCC) to assess the application of AI in diagnosing DR in the literature published from January 1, 2012, to June 30, 2022. These data were processed by CiteSpace 6.1.R3 software. Results Overall, 858 publications from 77 countries and regions were examined, with the United States considered the leading country in this domain. The largest cluster labeled “automated detection” was employed in the generating stage from 2007 to 2014. The burst keywords from 2020 to 2022 were artificial intelligence and transfer learning. Conclusion Initial research focused on the study of intelligent algorithms used to localize or recognize lesions on fundus images to assist in diagnosing DR. Presently, the focus of research has changed from upgrading the accuracy and efficiency of DR lesion detection and classification to research on DR diagnostic systems. However, further studies on DR and computer engineering are required.

Abstract: As an essential step towards computer creativity, automatic poetry generation has gained increasing attention these years. Though recent neural models make prominent progress in some criteria of poetry quality, generated poems still suffer from the problem of poor diversity. Related literature researches show that different factors, such as life experience, historical background, etc., would influence composition styles of poets, which considerably contributes to the high diversity of human-authored poetry. Inspired by this, we propose MixPoet, a novel model that absorbs multiple factors to create various styles and promote diversity. Based on a semi-supervised variational autoencoder, our model disentangles the latent space into some subspaces, with each conditioned on one influence factor by adversarial training. In this way, the model learns a controllable latent variable to capture and mix generalized factor-related properties. Different factor mixtures lead to diverse styles and hence further differentiate generated poems from each other. Experiment results on Chinese poetry demonstrate that MixPoet improves both diversity and quality against three state-of-the-art models.
