    Abstract: Introduction: Due to the enhanced awareness of consumers concerning healthy foods, homemade expeller-pressed oils have become popular worldwide. However, an extended storage period may lead to oxidization of the oil and exposure to hazardous byproducts by consumers. Methods: In this study, 10 pressed oil samples prepared from common oilseeds using a small-scale expeller oil press were analyzed by OXITEST with a sample amount of 5 g of oil and an oxygen pressure of 800 kPa under accelerated conditions for shelf-life projections. The oil properties were investigated, including the recovery, smoke point, acid value, iodine value, “fatty acid composition, and contents of pigments and tocopherols”. Results: The autoxidation reaction of various expeller-pressed oils under an accelerated testing system followed zero-order Arrhenius kinetics ( R 2 & gt; 0.99). Shelf-lives of the pressed oils at 25°C were estimated by extrapolation to range 105~1,089 days. The obtained shelf-lives were significantly correlated with log induction period (IP) values ( r & gt; 0.81, p & lt; 0.05) and unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) ( r & lt; −0.69, p & lt; 0.05), but not with the iodine value, acid value, or smoke point. Scatter diagrams between shelf-lives and UFAs suggested that these pressed oils could be grouped by two linear regression curves ( r & gt; 0.98, p & lt; 0.05). The predictive equations using multiple linear regression are presented herein, with predictor variables of UFAs and an unspecified item involving potential influencing factors such as tocopherol contents ( r & gt; 0.88, p & lt; 0.05). Conclusions: Our findings first revealed that the UFA portion was partially correlated with the shelf-lives of selected expeller-pressed seed oils as estimated by the OXITEST. The derived equations can be applied for shelf-life predictions of expeller-pressed oils stored under dark ambient conditions based on the fatty acid profile.

    Abstract: Prolongation of gastrointestinal transit resulting in nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) is the most common phenomenon during the first trimester of pregnancy. Increased human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) concentration during the first trimester is the most likely cause of NVP. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hCG on gastrointestinal transit and plasma concentrations of cholecystokinin (CCK) in ovariectomized (Ovx) rats. I.p. injection of hCG was used to evaluate the dose effect of hCG on gastrointestinal transit in Ovx rats. The CCK antagonist lorglumide was used to clarify the role of CCK in regulating gastrointestinal transit. Gastrointestinal transit was assessed 15 min after intragastric gavage of a mixture of 10% charcoal and Na 2 51 CrO 4 (0.5 μCi/ml). After i.p. administration of hCG, gastric emptying was inhibited in Ovx rats, but intestinal transit was not affected. Plasma CCK concentrations were increased in a dose-dependent manner after hCG treatment, and gastric emptying showed a significant negative correlation with CCK concentrations ( P =0.01, r 2 =−0.5104). Peripheral administration (i.p.) of lorglumide, a selective CCK 1 receptor antagonist, attenuated the hCG-induced inhibition of gastric emptying in Ovx rats, whereas central administration via the i.c.v. route did not. hCG treatment of Ovx rats inhibits gastric emptying in a dose-dependent manner via a peripheral mechanism of CCK hypersecretion and activation of CCK 1 receptors.

    Abstract: We investigated the associations of insulin resistance and β-cell secretion with bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporosis using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Data on BMD assessed using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry from 5292 participants were analyzed. Insulin resistance and β-cell secretion were assessed using the Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) and β-cell function (HOMA-β), respectively. We divided the study population into four groups according to HOMA-IR ( & lt;2 vs. ≥ 2) and HOMA-β ( & lt;100 vs. ≥ 100). BMD and T score at the lumbar spine, hip joint, and femur were used for analyses. Osteoporosis was defined as a T score ≤ -2.5. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations of HOMA-IR and HOMA-β with osteoporosis, and the joint effects of HOMA-IR and HOMA-β on osteoporosis. We found a positive association between HOMA-IR and osteoporosis in participants with a HOMA-β ≥ 100 (OR 8.773, 95% CI 2.160-35.637, p=0.002 at the femoral neck). A negative association between HOMA-β and osteoporosis was noted in those with a HOMA-IR & lt;2 (OR 0.183, 95% CI 0.038-0.882, p=0.034 at the femoral neck). Compared with participants who had HOMA-IR & lt;2 and HOMA-β & lt;100, those with HOMA-IR & lt;2 and HOMA-β ≥ 100 had a lower risk of osteoporosis (OR 0.126, 95% CI 0.020-0.805, p=0.032 at the femoral neck). In conclusion, the association between HOMA-β and BMD/osteoporosis changed as HOMA-IR increased. HOMA-β was negatively associated with osteoporosis when HOMA-IR & lt;2. The association was not significant when HOMA-IR ≥ 2.

    Abstract: Introduction : Two common variants of sortilin-related receptor 1 gene ( SORL1 ), rs2298813 and rs1784933, have been associated with late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in the Han Chinese population in Taiwan. However, neuroimaging correlates of these two SORL1 variants remain unknown. We aimed to determine whether the two SORL1 polymorphisms were associated with any volumetric differences in brain regions in late-onset AD patients. Methods : We recruited 200 patients with late-onset AD from Taipei Veterans General Hospital. All patients received a structural magnetic resonance (MR) imaging brain scan and completed a battery of neurocognitive tests at enrollment. We followed up to assess changes in Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores in 155 patients (77.5%) at an interval of 2 years. Volumetric measures and cortical thickness of various brain regions were performed using FreeSurfer. Regression analysis controlled for apolipoprotein E status. Multiple comparisons were corrected for using the false discovery rate. Results : The homozygous major allele of rs2298813 was associated with larger volumes in the right putamen ( p = 0.0442) and right pallidum ( p = 0.0346). There was no link between the rs1784933 genotypes with any regional volume or thickness of the brain. In the rs2298813 homozygous major allele carriers, the right putaminal volume was associated with verbal fluency ( p = 0.008), and both the right putaminal and pallidal volumes were predictive of clinical progression at follow-up ( p = 0.020). In the minor allele carriers, neither of the nuclei was related to cognitive test performance or clinical progression. Conclusion : The major and minor alleles of rs2298813 had differential effects on the right lentiform nucleus volume and distinctively modulated the association between the regional volume and cognitive function in patients with AD.

    Abstract: Dementia is associated with many comorbidities while being related to Apolipoprotein E ( ApoE ) polymorphism. However, it is unclear how these clinical illnesses and genetic factors modify the dementia risk. Methods We enrolled 600 dementia cases and 6000 matched non-dementia controls, with identified ApoE genotype (ε4/ε4, ε4/ε3, and ε3/ε3). Eight comorbidities were selected by medical records, and counted if occurring within 3 years of enrollment. Results The dementia group had a higher ratio of carrying ε4 allele and prevalence of comorbidities than the non-dementia group. Homozygous ε4 carriers presented the broken line of dementia risk with the peak age at 65–75 years and odds ratio (OR) up to 6.6. The risk only emerged after 65 years of age in ε3/ε4 subjects with OR around 1.6–2.4 when aged & gt; 75 years. Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is the commonest comorbidity (14.6%). CVA, sleep disorder, and functional gastrointestinal disorders remained as significant risk comorbidities for dementia throughout all age groups (OR = 1.7–5.0). When functional gastrointestinal disorder and ε4 allele both occurred, the dementia risk exceeded the summation of individual risks (OR = 3.7 and 1.9 individually, OR = 6.0 for the combination). Comorbidities could also be predictors of dementia. Conclusion Combining the genetic and clinical information, we detected cognitive decline and optimize interventions early when the patients present a specific illness in a particular age and carry a specific ApoE allele. Of comorbidities, functional gastrointestinal disorder is the strongest predicting factor for dementia in ε4 allele carriers.

    Abstract: Young children are fundamental elements of societal progress. Consequently, cultivating adeptness in early childhood education and childcare talents assumes paramount significance, with educators within tertiary colleges and universities taking a pivotal role therein. Furthermore, research literacy is what educators develop through applying theoretical knowledge and is deemed an indispensable competency in effective instruction. This proficiency is manifested in formulating superlative curricula and augmenting scholastic prospects for students. Hence, the primary objective of this study is to analyze the global academic progression within the domain of early childhood education across Taiwanese tertiary institutions from 2012 to 2022. Employing the content analysis toolkit for academic research technology, the investigation discloses three focal points of research interest: children’s health, preschool curriculum design, and the professional competence of preschool educators. The inquiry discerns that personnel within Taiwan’s higher education sphere have evinced remarkable research scholarly proficiency in early childhood education. This not only bolsters Taiwan’s international scholarly standing but also emboldens nascent researchers to undertake more profound explorations within this academic arena, thereby amplifying Taiwan’s global academic influence in early childhood education.

    Abstract: Metabolic syndrome has been shown to be a risk for new onset of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes. The subclasses of metabolic syndrome and any associated adverse health outcomes remain obscure. This study aimed to explore potential subtypes of metabolic syndrome, their associations with incidental diabetes, and any Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events (MACE). Methods Data for the retrospective cohort study were extracted from the New Taipei City Elderly Health Examination Database in the years 2014 and 2016. Demographic data, status of metabolic syndrome, its components, and latent class analysis (LCA) were analyzed. All participants were aged 65 years and older, with those having a prior history of CVD, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes mellitus (DM), and currently taking medications for hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia were excluded. Results A total of 4,537 senior citizens were enrolled, with 2,207 (48.6%) of them identified as men. The prevalence of both metabolic syndrome and central obesity was increased with age. A 4-latent class model was fitted for participants diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. The central obesity (ABD)+ hyperglycemia (GLU)+ reduced HDL-C (HDL)+ high Blood Pressure (BP) group displayed the highest hazard ratio (HR) for predicting the new onset of diabetes, while the ABD+HDL+BP group showed a high risk for both CVD and MACE when compared after 2 years of follow-up. Conclusions This epidemiological analysis demonstrated that the risks of developing new-onset diabetes, CVD, and MACE varied among the different subtypes of metabolic syndrome.
