Abstract: Microplastics ( 〈 5mm) are one emerging pollutant in the environment. These are the threats and challenges facing the global environment, economy, and society, especially in hotspot regions such as Asia. This paper presents the microplastic characteristics found in the surface sediment of the main Red River estuary (the Ba Lat) during four separate monitoring runs in 2020. The microplastic amount in the sediment samples varied from 800 items per kg of dried weight (dw) to 3,817 items.kg-1 dw, averaging 2,188 ± 1,499 items.kg-1 dw. Fiber and fragment microplastics were discovered to be primary shapes, of which fibers dominated (94%). Microplastic fiber sizes were found mainly in the 〈 500 µm (69%) range. The most primarily observed colors of microplastics were blue (36%), white (21%), and red (11%). There were five recognized polymer types (polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyurethane (PU), polyamide (PA), and polystyrene (PS)) in the sediment samples, with PE and PP predominating. Seasonal fluctuations in microplastic concentrations at the Ba Lat site, a significant aquaculture zone, may indicate the contribution of multiple sources. Our research demonstrated the necessity of microplastic observation in organisms, particularly in the aquaculture zones in Vietnam. Our findings further underline the importance of managing and minimizing the amount of plastic garbage that enters the ecosystem.

Abstract: Microplastics (MPs), referring to plastic items ranging from 1 to 5000 µm long, are polluting the terrestrial and aquatic environments and are becoming a threat to the health of ecosystems, biota, and humans. Rivers are major carriers of these materials from the terrestrial environment to the oceans. In the present study, the occurrence of MPs in a peri-urban river was investigated. The Day river system is a good example of a peri-urban river strongly influenced by human activities in the whole basin. Water samples were collected from the downstream of the Day river, including Cau Que, Cau Do, and Do Thong, in the rainy and dry seasons using a plankton sampling net for identifying microplastic concentration, size, shape, color, and polymer composition. Microplastic abundance in the surface water ranged from 269,693±60,624 to 863,005±131,925 items/m3. The microplastic concentration in the rainy season was higher than that in the dry season. MPs abundance was increased at a site near urban areas with high human activity. The microplastic shape was collected in different seasons did not change significantly, with microplastic fibers as the major items, accounting for above 92% of the total items. Many fibers microplastics collected in this study were in small sizes of 300-1000 µm and 1000-2000 µm, occupying 78.5-85.7% of the total microplastic items. Purple was the most common color of microplastics. Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) were major polymer types of the selected items in the surface water samples downstream of the Day River.

Abstract: In this research, rice husk-derived biochar (BC) was evaluated to determine the suitable conditions for the methylene blue (MB) solution adsorption. The characterization of BC was identified by the methods of FT-IR, Raman, and point of zero charges (PZC). The adsorption studies were carried out with BC at different activation conditions (raw BC, HNO3 25% for 4 hours, NaOH 25% for 4 hours, H2O at 90°C for 2 hours and 4 hours, HNO3 25% at 90°C for 2 hours and 4 hours). The activated material then went through an adsorption assessment. Activated BC with NaOH 25% showed its preeminence compared to the other six conditions when reaching the maximum efficiency after the first hour of adsorption. The investigation revealed that the adsorption capacity of the material depends on the activation methods, including pH, activation agent, temperature, and time. The adsorption of BC was consistent with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, with high correlation coefficients (R2: 0.9838 and 0.9975, respectively). Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of rice husk is feasible for the removal of MB from aqueous solutions.

Abstract: Plastic materials are defined as including the whole of organic polymers owning plasticity. Their production increases rapidly due to their superior properties and applications in our life. Currently, the annual production of plastic is estimated at nearly 400 million tons. About 10% of the plastic produced is discharged into the seas and oceans. Microplastics (MP, less than 5 mm in size) are non-biodegradable and persistent in the environment and have the ability to accumulate in various environmental components, organisms and other human beings through the food chain. Therefore, assessing microplastic pollution becomes essential for the marine and ocean environment. This study aims to evaluate microplastic pollution in Nam Dinh seawater. Water samples were taken in summer 2020 and spring 2021 in Giao Thuy district, Nam Dinh province. Samples were treated with 30% H2O2 solution to remove organic matters and then microplastic buoyantly separated using saturated NaCl solution. MP was identified through observation under a stereo microscope (Olympus SZX2-TR300) and its nature was determined through infrared spectroscopy (µFTIR). Results show that a large level of pollution (average 6 to 8 particles/m3 and 10–14 million particles/km2) is associated with the predominant of colored fibers among MP characteristics. Most of the microplastics identified are Polypropylene in nature. Next, more research needs to be invested in this pollution problem, such as expanding the scope and research object.

Abstract: Aquaculture in the coastal zone has contributed significantly to economic development in Giao Thuy district, Nam Dinh province. Therefore, water quality for aquaculture plays a vital role in sustainable aquaculture production. In this paper, iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) concentrations in aquaculture coastal water of Giao Thuy district were analyzed during the rainy season (September 2017, August 2018) and dry season at low tide. The results showed that Fe concentration varied from 0.09 mg/L (at VT5) to 2.42 mg/L (at VT4), averaging 1.12 ± 0.71 mg/L, which exceeded the critical value of the national technical regulation on marine water quality in Vietnam for coastal aquaculture water (QCVN 10:2015/BTNMT) from 1.5 times (at VT4) to 3.0 times (at VT1). Mn concentrations ranged from 0.02 mg/L (at VT9) to 0.10 mg/L (at VT1), averaging 0.05 ± 0.02 mg/L, which was lower than the critical value in the QCVN 10:2015/BTNMT. The results showed that no apparent seasonal variation was observed for both Fe and Mn concentrations. In the dry season, the Fe and Mn concentrations averaged 1.10 mg/L and 0.05 mg/L respectively, whereas they were 1.15 mg/L and 0.05 mg/L in the rainy season. The monitoring results showed that Fe was polluted in the study area and may affect aquaculture productivity. Therefore, helpful measures should be taken to minimize Fe pollution to protect water quality and develop sustainable aquaculture in Giao Thuy district, Nam Dinh province.

Abstract: This study represents the application of the Water Quality Indices (WQI) and GIS techniques to grading water pollution and the factors that influenced the groundwater quality of the Holocene (qh) and Pleistocene (qp) aquifers in the coastal zone of Ninh Thuan province. 100 underground water samples were collected from residential water well of qh aquifer (53 samples) and qp aquifer (47 samples). Water quality indices using in the study incorporated total dissolved solids (TDS), chloride (Cl-), flouride (F-), nitrite (NO2-), nitrate (NO3-), iron (Fe3+), manganese (Mn2+). Calculated WQI grading scale for the groundwater quality of the 100 water samples ranged from very good to inedible for drinking purpose. The result shown the water sample graded as “excellent water quality” accounted the most (23,3% and 14,9% for the qh and qp aquifer, respectively), the followings were “good water quality” grade ranked the second (9,4% and 8,5%); “poor water quality” grade (43,4% and 30,04%); “very poor water quality” grade (1,89% and 10,64%); and “inedible” grade (16,98% and 31,9%). Water samples graded as “very poor” and “inedible” were mostly distributed on the southeast of Ninh Hai district and Tri Hai commune (Ninh Hai district), Xuan Hai and Cong Hai communes (Thuan Bac district), Phuoc Thuan (Ninh Phuoc district) of the qh aquifer, and to the south of study area of the qp aquifer because of the exceptionally high TDS. Other samples which were low on TDS but graded “bad” due to surprisingly high concentrations of other ions (Cl-, NO3-, NO2-). The result provided concreted information on the polluted agents in groundwater and a valuable tool to support authorities in management and zoning groundwater quality of the study area.

Abstract: Lakes in Hanoi play an important role in local human life. However, along with the economic and social development, some urban lakes have been polluted, especially organic pollution. This paper presents the monthly survey results for organic pollution assessment of ten selected lakes in Ha Noi city: the Ho Tay, Truc Bach, Thien Quang, Ba Mau, Bay Mau, Hoan Kiem, Ngoc Khanh, Giang Vo, Thanh Cong and Thu Le lakes during the period from March 2014 to February 2015. The survey results showed that the Ba Mau lake was organic polluted at level IV whereas other lakes were contaminated by organic matters at level III. Organic pollution may come from both autochthonous and allochthonous sources. Compared with the results of previous studies, the water quality of 10 lakes in the period from March 2014 to February 2015 has been improved thank for the recent application of some positive solutions for lake environmental protection.

Abstract: Currently, plastic and microplastic pollution have become a common problem in many countries around the world, especially in developing countries, including Vietnam. Salt is the main ingredient in most of the spices used, but microplastic contamination has also been reported in seasalt samples in Vietnam. This paper presents the observation results of microplastic concentrations in some spice-salt samples that were purchased in the market in Hanoi, Viet Nam. The analysis results showed that the microplastic concentrations in the spice-salt samples varied in a wide range, from 320 to 1880 items/kg spice-salt. Microplastic fibers accounted for the majority (99%), whereas fragment forms accounted for a negligible proportion (1%). Microplastics were observed with a wide variety of colors, of which blue, red, and black were predominant. The results contribute to assessing the level of microplastic contamination in spice-salts in Hanoi city, Vietnam in order to give warnings and propose solutions to prevent and minimize microplastic contamination in spice-salt, for protecting the health of human consumers.
