Abstract: The association between arterial stiffness and left ventricular (LV) diastolic function has been demonstrated in several studies, but the samples size in those studies was small. This study aims to verify this issue in a large number of study subjects. Methods A total of 7,013 consecutive participants (mean age 60.6 years and 43.3% female) who underwent both baPWV and transthoracic echocardiography were retrospectively analyzed. Subjects with significant cardiac structural abnormalities were excluded. Results There were significant correlations of baPWV with septal e′ velocity ( r = – 0.408; P & lt; 0.001), septal E/e′ ( r = 0.349; P & lt; 0.001), left atrial volume index (LAVI) ( r = 0.122; P & lt; 0.001) and maximal velocity of tricuspid valve regurgitation (TR Vmax) ( r = 0.322; P & lt; 0.001). The baPWV values increased proportionally with an increase in the number of LV diastolic indices meeting LV diastolic dysfunction criteria ( P -for-trend & lt; 0.001). In multivariable analyses with adjustment for confounding effects of various clinical covariates, higher baPWV was independently associated with septal e′ & lt; 7 (odds ratio [OR], 1.30; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.20–1.60; P & lt; 0.001), septal E/e′ ≥ 15 (OR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.21–1.78; P & lt; 0.001), and TR Vmax & gt; 2.8 m/s (OR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.23–2.09; P & lt; 0.001) but not with LAVI ≥ 34 mL/m 2 (OR, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.76–1.03; P = 0.123). Conclusions Increased arterial stiffness, as measured by baPWV, was associated with abnormal diastolic function parameters in a large number of study participants, providing strong evidence to the existing data about ventricular-vascular coupling.

Abstract: Coronary artery calcium (CAC), which can be measured in various types of computed tomography (CT) examinations, is a hallmark of coronary artery atherosclerosis. However, despite the clinical value of CAC scores in predicting cardiovascular events, routine measurement of CAC scores is limited due to high cost, radiation exposure, and lack of widespread availability. It would be of great clinical significance if CAC could be predicted by electrocardiograms (ECGs), which are cost-effective and routinely performed during various medical checkups. We aimed to develop binary classification artificial intelligence (AI) models that predict CAC using only ECGs as input. Moreover, we aimed to address the generalizability of our model in different environments by externally validating our model on a dataset from a different institution. Among adult patients, standard 12-lead ECGs were extracted if measured within 60 days before or after the CAC scores, and labeled with the corresponding CAC scores. We constructed deep convolutional neural network models based on residual networks using only the raw waveforms of the ECGs as input, predicting CAC at different levels, namely CAC score ≥100, ≥400 and ≥1,000. Our AI models performed well in predicting CAC in the training and internal validation dataset [area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUROC) 0.753 ± 0.009, 0.802 ± 0.027, and 0.835 ± 0.024 for the CAC score ≥100, ≥400, and ≥1,000 model, respectively]. Our models also performed well in the external validation dataset (AUROC 0.718, 0.777 and 0.803 for the CAC score ≥100, ≥400, and ≥1,000 model, respectively), indicating that our model can generalize well to different but plausibly related populations. Model performance in ter ms of AUROC increased in the order of CAC score ≥100, ≥400, and ≥1,000 model, indicating that higher CAC scores might be associated with more prominent structural changes of the heart detected by the model. With our AI models, a substantial proportion of previously unrecognized CAC can be afforded with a risk stratification of CAC, enabling initiation of prophylactic therapy, and reducing the adverse consequences related to ischemic heart disease.

Abstract: This paper presents findings of a study on geogrid reinforced flexible pavement in a low volume road through a three-dimensional finite element analysis. A mechanistic model was developed for geogrid reinforced flexible pavement. To analyze the behavior of pavement foundation, stress-dependent resilient modulus models were employed in both base and subgrade layers. The model also incorporated previous research findings to enhance the reliability of the analysis. During the analysis, comparisons were made to contrast the responses of low volume flexible pavement with and without geogrid. The results show geogrid reinforcement reduces critical pavement responses under traffic loading, such as vertical surface deflection, tensile strain in asphalt concrete, and compressive strain in subgrade. The study found up to 18% reduction of vertical strain at the top of subgrade and 68% reduction of tensile strain at the bottom of asphalt concrete. Also, geogrid provides confining stresses in the adjacent aggregate layer, which leads to surrounding layers becoming stiffer. Based on the results of this study, the placement of geogrid reinforcement on top of weak subgrade was found particularly effective compared to that on strong subgrade.

Abstract: Water contaminants such as endocrine inhibitors, pharmaceuticals, and chlorine treatment by-products are only recently being identified as significant hazards to human health. Since current chlorine treatment does not address many of these compounds and conventional ozone processing is not seen as an economic alternative, water adjacent plasma treatment has been investigated as a more efficient and effective decontamination method. This work investigates the use of a surface dielectric barrier discharge electrode as a reduced discharge voltage portable plasma water treatment method. The gas passes through holes in the electrodes, normal to the discharge surface, so that the entire cross-sectional area of the feed gas is exposed to plasma, prior to passing through a hydrophobic filter and bubbling into the water. The decontamination effectiveness is quantified by measuring the degradation of methylene blue with absorption spectroscopy. Studies of the different processing parameters (treatment time, solution volume, initial concentration, electrode-filter distance, and gas flow rate) clarify the potential range of performance for this plasma treatment configuration. The setup has a yield energy of 0.45 g/kW·h at 25 ml of 1 mg/100 ml methylene blue treated over 5 minutes for a 92% degradation. The degradation rate is dependent upon the volume ratio of air to methylene blue solution, suggesting a first order chemical reaction process. The reaction rate is increased by increasing the quantity of either reactant. There is no change in the degradation between when the plasma is 1 mm or 1 cm from the water surface.

Abstract: This paper describes numerical analyses on low volume roads (LVRs) using a nonlinear three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM). Various pavement scenarios are analyzed to investigate the effects of pavement layer thicknesses, traffic loads, and material properties on pavement responses, such as surface deflection and subgrade strain. Each scenario incorporates a different combination of wheel/axle configurations and pavement geomaterial properties to analyze the nonlinear behavior of thinly surfaced asphalt pavement. In this numerical study, nonlinear stress-dependent models are employed in the base and subgrade layers to properly characterize pavement geomaterial behavior. Finite element analysis results are then described in terms of the effects of the asphalt pavement thickness, wheel/axle configurations, and geomaterial properties on critical pavement responses. Conclusions are drawn by the comparison of the nonlinear pavement responses in the base and subgrade in association with the effects of multiple wheel/axle load interactions.
