    Abstract: Background: Previous studies in humans have confirmed dysregulations of circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) in patients with various cardiovascular diseases. However, studies on circulating miRNAs in dogs with various heart diseases are limited in number. This study aimed to identify significantly dysregulated circulating miRNAs and characterize them as novel biomarkers in dogs with heart diseases. Materials and Methods: Circulating levels of 11 miRNAs were investigated in serum samples of 82 dogs (72 with heart diseases and 10 healthy dogs) using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The results were correlated to clinical data including echocardiographic results and N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels. Results: Upregulation of cfa-miR-130b was observed in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve degeneration (MMVD) stage B, patent ductus arteriosus, and pulmonic stenosis. In dogs with MMVD stage B, cfa-miR-130b was upregulated and correlated with clinical indices. In receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, cfa-miR-130b accurately distinguished dogs with diseases from healthy dogs. We also observed that cfa-miR-375 and cfa-let-7b were upregulated in dogs with concentric cardiac hypertrophy. The cfa-miR-375 was correlated with concentric hypertrophy indices and was an accurate indicator of concentric hypertrophy in ROC analysis. Conclusions: The miRNAs identified in this study may be used as novel biomarkers and possible candidates for therapeutic targets in various canine heart diseases.

    Abstract: A 9-year-old intact female Maltese dog was admitted for further evaluation of previously diagnosed patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). The dog showed severe coughing and exercise intolerance. On physical examination, a grade VI/VI continuous heart murmur was auscultated. Thoracic radiography demonstrated cardiomegaly, pulmonary overcirculation, and moderate bronchointerstitial pattern. Echocardiography revealed severe dilation of the left ventricle and atrium, decreased left ventricular contractility, and left-to-right PDA. On electrocardiography (ECG), R amplitude was increased. Computed tomographic angiography revealed type IIA PDA. The serum N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentration was & gt;10,000 pmol/L. Transarterial occlusion was performed and the Amplatz® Canine Duct Occluder was successfully deployed. On echocardiography 48 h after the procedure, aortic regurgitation (AR) and residual ductal flow were noted. Long-term follow-up on clinical signs, physical examination, radiography, echocardiography, ECG, and serum NT-proBNP were evaluated until 30 months after correction of PDA. The clinical indices of physical examination, thoracic radiography, echocardiography, ECG, and serum NT-proBNP concentration were improved, although the postocclusion AR and residual ductal flow persisted. The dog followed up without clinical signs for 41 months following the correction. To our knowledge, this is the first case report to demonstrate quite a long time of follow-up (41 months) in an older dog with transarterial occlusion of PDA with postocclusion AR and residual flow.

    Abstract: A 7-year-old castrated male Poodle dog presented with chronic progressive lymphocytosis. Hematologic and peripheral blood smear findings included remarkable lymphocytosis with well-differentiated small lymphocytes. Cytology of bone marrow aspirate showed hypercellular integrity with infiltration of small mature lymphocytes, accounting for 45% of all nucleated cells. Flow cytometry of blood and marrow samples revealed neoplastic lymphocytes predominantly expressing the CD21 molecule. B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) was diagnosed on an immunophenotypic analysis. Administrations of prednisolone and chlorambucil were initiated and the response was unremarkable. Therefore, additional treatment with imatinib was provided, which resolved the hematologic abnormalities associated with CLL. Flow cytometry after ~1 year of treatment showed normalization of the count of lymphocytes positive for CD21 and resolved hematologic lymphocytosis. The dog was followed-up for 2 years, and there were no severe adverse effects. This case indicates that imatinib may be a good option as an adjunctive therapy with prednisolone and chlorambucil treatment for CLL in dogs without treatment response.

    Abstract: A ceramic interconnector of a solid oxide cell (SOC) should require high phase stability and conductivity in a redox environment. Due to these limitations, only a few materials were found to meet the usage requirement as SOC interconnector. Under various synthetic conditions, La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Fe 1-x Sc x O 3-δ (LSFSc) was synthesized for the purpose of introducing a redox stable and electrically conductive ceramic interconnector. The crystalline phases of LSFSc are stable when the solution pH is low (pH=2), and the calcination temperature is sufficiently high (T=1200ºC). From the XPS analysis, it is accepted that incorporation of Sc in the B site of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 FeScO 3-δ lattice further stabilizes its structural stability under reducing conditions. When the Sc concentration exceeds 10 mol%, phase stability of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Fe 1-x Sc x O 3-δ was obtained. Figure 1 shows the ASR variations of ceramic interconnectors based on LaFeO 3 doped at A-site with Sr and B-site with Sc in various redox environments. The electrical conductivity of La 0.8 Sr 0.2 FeO 3-δ is remarkably low at both oxidation and reduction atmospheres due to the high area specific resistance. However, the ASR of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 FeO 3-δ is less than half of La 0.8 Sr 0.2 FeO 3-δ when exposed to air at one side and is exposed to H 2 on the opposite side. This is one of the main reasons why we selected the composition as the basic crystal structure. However, La 0.6 Sr 0.4 FeO 3-δ shows big augment due to the decomposition at reduction atmosphere. Moreover, the instability against high relative humidity (RH) is the main downside of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 FeO 3-δ . For these reasons, it is difficult to employ La 0.6 Sr 0.4 FeO 3-δ as an interconnector material. Among the proposed materials, La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Fe 0.9 Sc 0.1 O 3-δ exhibited the most desirable performances at the various gas conditions for 1000 h. Therefore, La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Fe 0.9 Sc 0.1 O 3-δ is considered to be the most stable composition for redox stable and electrically conductive ceramic interconnectors for solid oxide cells. Figure 1.     Abstract: The effects of a Cu-based additive and nano-Gd-doped ceria (GDC) sol on the sintering temperature for the construction of solid oxide cells (SOCs) were investigated. A GDC buffer layer with 0.25–2 mol% CuO as a sintering aid was prepared by reacting GDC powder and a CuN 2 O 6 solution, followed by heating at 600 °C. The sintering of the CuO-added GDC powder was optimized by investigating linear shrinkage, microstructure, grain size, ionic conductivity, and activation energy at temperatures ranging from 1000 to 1400 °C. The sintering temperature of the CuO–GDC buffer layer was decreased from 1400 °C to 1000 °C by adding the CuO sintering aid at levels exceeding 0.5 mol%. The ionic conductivity of the CuO–GDC electrolyte was maximized at 0.5 mol% CuO. However, the addition of CuO did not significantly affect the activation energy of the GDC buffer layer. Buffer layers with CuO-added GDC or nano-GDC sol-infiltrated GDC were fabricated and tested in co-sintering (1050 °C, air) with La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LSCF). In addition, SOC tests were performed using button cells and flat tubular type five-cell stacks. The button cell exhibited the maximum power density of 0.89 W cm −2 in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) mode. The stack operated more than 1,000 h in solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) mode.

    Abstract: Mass production of hydrogen by water electrolysis has attracted great attention because it is sustainable without emitting CO 2 and there is no problem of resource depletion when combined with renewable energy technologies such as solar and wind power. In particular, solid oxide cells can provide high conversion efficiency assisted by thermodynamically advantageous water splitting at high operating temperatures typically over 700 o C. In this work, as can be seen in Figure below, we fabricated 1kW class stacks consisting of 30 flat-tubular solid oxide cells with an active area of 100cm 2 for mass production of hydrogen. The performance and durability of the stacks are investigated while operating in both electrolysis cell (EC) and fuel cell (FC) modes. The effect of the operating conditions, e.g. temperature, mass flow rate, steam-to-hydrogen ratio, etc., will be mainly discussed. Figure 1
