Abstract: This study focuses on the risk of pollen allergy due to paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera L.), an Asian invasive plant species now common in large parts of the world. Pollen plays a key role in the pathogenesis of respiratory allergic diseases, particularly rhinitis and asthma, and Islamabad, a major metropolitan city, is severely affected by allergy owing to B. papyrifera pollen. Due to its seasonality and other relationships with climatic variables, we used remote sensing to monitor the trend of pollen count. We also mapped the localisation of patients affected by pollen allergy using geographic information systems. The maximum likelihood algorithm was applied to SPOT-5 satellite imagery for land use/land cover classification. Temporal analysis of remotely sensed data revealed an increasing trend of paper mulberry density towards the southern and south-western part of Islamabad. Although not evident during rainfall, a clear positive correlation was found between patient count and pollen count. Field survey data and hotspot spatial analysis of allergy patients revealed that residents of Shakerperiyan and Lok Virsa areas (Sectors H-8, I-8, I-9, G-8, G-7 and G-6 in Islamabad) had more pronounced symptoms compared to residents of other sectors. The methodology adopted used in this study can be used to map the distribution of similar invasive species in other parts of the country.

Abstract: The aim of this research work was to measure the concentration of essential trace elements, including serum copper, iron and zinc in children suffering from anemia, and also to investigate the effect of heavy metal like lead on causing anemia. The study has been performed on school going children living in Hyderabad, which is a mini industrialized city. The study was carried out in anemic children studying in different schools of Hyderabad having different age groups. 10 ml venous blood samples were obtained after an informed consent form was signed. The samples were used to analyzed the trace elements (Fe,Cu, Zn) and toxic metal Lead (Pb). Trace elements include zinc and copper were found elevated in anemic children than healthy one, Copper is involved in many vital mechanisms in the body, energy production, connective tissue formation, and Fe metabolism, whereas copper found low with relation to the iron in anemic children because copper helps in the absorption of iron. Zinc is an essential micronutrient demanded by living being because of its significant position in-cooperation with structural constituent of proteins and as a cofactor in enzyme catalysis, there is difference between zinc and iron, they have been found to inhibit each other’s absorption due to their competitive absorption pathways. Increased zinc levels found in children with low iron content, whereas control group have normal results of these elements which may be due to their dietary management. The results revealed the environmental pollution and the associated health risks on exposure to lead. Pb concentrations whereas the current research stated a considerable relationship of mild and severe anemia with 10-42.2μg/dl Pb concentrations, the variation in results may be due to a small sample size in the current study, Drinking water from corrosion of plumbing systems through the use of lead sellers and other lead containing materials in connecting household plumbing to public water supplies. Ground and surface water are also contaminated by lead consuming industry and agricultural activities. The concentrations of Pb greater than or equal to (≥)10 μg/dl in children related with an increased threat of mild and severe anemia, diminishing iron absorption . High Lead levels were related with lower concentrations of iron, ferritin and copper, in this study it was found that high levels of lead were found mostly in boys. Lead levels have also found in control group which was below 5 ug/dl, according to WHO ≥ 10 ug/dl is considered as high.

Abstract: The campylobacter genus of bacteria is important in public health as it comprises many species causing diarrhea in humans. Poultry and their products are recognized as vital causes of campylobacteriosis in humans. For bacterial food-borne diseases, Campylobacter is considered as the leading cause. Higher prevalence has been reported in developed countries. Our study was a cross-sectional study directed to determine the prevalence of Campylobacter species in retail broiler meat in the Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, from January to June 2018. A total of 200 poultry meat samples were collected from four different areas of district Bannu Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan that includes Lakki gate, Tanchi bazar, Bannu Township and Mangal milla. Mueller-Hinton medium was used for disc diffusion method to determine antibiotic resistance of Campylobacter species. Amongst 200 broiler meat samples, 60 (30%) samples were found positive for Campylobacter species. The highest prevalence was observed in samples from Bannu Township (50%) while lowest prevalence (12%) was observed in samples from Mangal milla broiler meat samples. Amongst different types of meat samples, highest prevalence was found in thigh meat (46%), while lowest prevalence was observed in cloacal swab (20%). Highest resistance was observed against Amoxicillin (AMX) 80% while the resistance observed against other antibiotics were Ampicillin (AMP) 70%, Tetracycline (TET) 65%, Sulphamethoxazole + Trimethoprim (SXT) 60%, Chloramphenicol (CHL) 56.66%, Clarithromycin (CLR) 50%, Streptomycin (STR) 40%, Gentamycin (GEN) 36.66%, Ofloxacin (OFX) 20%, Ciprofloxacin (CIP) 15%, Levofloxacin (LEV) 15% and Azithromycin (AZM) 10%. The lowest resistance was observed against Ceftriaxone (CRO) 5%. Our Study concludes that Campylobacter species is prevalent highly in district Bannu, and it might be a hazard to public health.

Abstract: Background: Nutritional anaemia is the most common nutritional problem worldwide. Underweight and anaemia are associated and together constitute a serious problem in developing countries like India. Aim & Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of anaemia among medical students and determine its association with their body mass index (BMI). Material & Methods: Hemoglobin estimation was done in 140 MBBS students and anaemia status was determined by WHO criteria for anaemia. BMI was calculated and interpreted using cutoffs for Asian Indian population. Statistical analysis was done by Chi-square distribution and Binary logistic regression. Results: Overall prevalence of anaemia in students was 55.7% and 78.6% females compared to only 32.9% males were anaemic (p 〈 0.001). Gender was associated with both the severity of anaemia (p=0.028) and BMI (p=0.036). Prevalence of anaemia was significantly (p=0.007) higher in underweight students (88.9%) compared to normal (54.2%) and overweight/obese (46%) students. However, no association was found between BMI and severity of anaemia (p=0.985). Conclusion: Anaemia is significantly associated with nutritional status. Prevalence of anaemia is higher in underweight students compared to normal and overweight/obese students and management of both undernutrition and anaemia is critical for optimal results.

Abstract: Background: Distal radius fracture is one of the most common injuries presented to emergency department and can be presented in any age group. In young patients the most common cause is Road Traffic Accident (RTA), while old patient history of fall is the most common cause. Different surgical options are available to treat this injury. This study aims to compare the outcome of volar buttress plate vs across wrist external fixator for Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen (AO) type C2/C3 fracture of the distal radius. Methods: A retrospective comparative study between July 2020 to June 2021 at Ghurki Trust Teaching Hospital was done and a total of 50 patients who underwent surgical intervention for AO C2/C3 fracture of the distal Radius, were included. The follow-up period was 12 weeks. QuickDASH score was used to find out patient’s functional outcomes. Functional outcome was analyzed between the two groups using Mann-Whitney U test, using SPSS version 21. Result: There was no significant statistical difference between the functional outcome of patients with distal radius fracture treated with across wrist external fixator vs volar buttress plate, in term of QuickDASH score. Furthermore, age and gender also were having no effect on functional outcome in our population. Conclusion: Across wrist external fixator is a reasonable option for AO C2/C3 type fractures of the distal radius with comparable results with volar buttress plate. It is the procedure of choice in high volume tertiary care hospitals like Gurki Trust Teaching hospital as it saves time, have similar functional outcome score, no need to re-open for removal of implant, less chances of tendon rupture as compared to volar buttress plate for distal radius fracture.

Abstract: Objective: Hearing disorders are very common these days due to increasing noise pollution. Iris color is due to that melanin pigment. As in Pakistan, people having dark eye colors are common. Melanin is involved in the hearing because cochlear melanocytes are involved in generating endo cochlear potential that helps in hearing. Hence eye color may be associated with hearing loss due to melanin pigment. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Department of Physiology, Sahiwal Medical College, Sahiwal. Period: 11 June to 16 July 2022. Material & Methods: Convenient sampling technique was used. Patients with hearing disorders at OPD of Sahiwal teaching hospital were included in our research. Results: During the study period, 86 patients visited the STH as cases valid for this study. Majority of the patients (93.02%) had a darker iris and only a small number of them (4.65%) had a fair iris color. The middle ear disorders were the most common in the patients prevailing in 47.67% of the patients flowed by outer ear issues in 45.35% patients and the inner ear issues were less prevalent fount in only 6.98% patients. In 39.53% patients have issues in there both ears simultaneously. Though the statistical significance was not found between iris color and hearing disorder (p=0.904), yet it (iris color) was statistically significant with the age groups of the study population (p=0.004). Conclusion: There is no association between Iris color and hearing disorders.

Abstract: Ficus palmata (F. palmata) is a medicinally very rich plant that is used as a folk medicine to treat many diseases. This study investigated the anticancer effect of 70% ethanolic leaves extract of F. palmata alone and its combinational study with photosense-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) and doxorubicin hydrochloride (Dox-HCl) on rhabdomyosarcoma (RD) cells. The inhibitory dose (IC 50 ) was calculated from dose response analysis of 24 h post exposure of F. palmata (400, 200, 100, 50, 25, 12.5 µ g ml −1 ), Dox-HCl (4, 3, 2, 1 µ M), and photosense (80, 40, 20, 10, 5 µ M, 10 J cm −2 ) mediated PDT. These IC 50 doses were further used to assess the anticancer effect of F. palmata in combination with photosense-mediated PDT and Dox-HCl. The in vitro findings showed that the 70% ethanolic F. palmata leaves extract has anticancer potential, and has the ability to enhance the anticancer effect in combination with other therapies. Moreover, the neoadjuvent combination of F. palmata with PDT and chemotherapy has a synergistic effect. This study provides evidence that F. palmate leaves extract possesses promising anticancer activity, and more research is needed to isolate the specific bioactive compound for cancer treatment.

Abstract: Phytocompounds play a key role in prevention and treatment of cancers. The secondary metabolites are being studied due to their anticancer and antioxidant properties leading to the finding of new therapeutic agents. Like many medicinal plants, Ficus racemosa (FR) is rich in polyphenols and can be used in cancer treatment. The side effects of existing therapeutic modalities at high doses may be reduced in combination. In this study the anticancer and anti-migration potentials of FR were evaluated, along with its combinational study at low therapeutic dosage with doxorubicin-HCl (Dox-HCl), dacarbazine (DTIC) and photodynamic therapy (PDT). The effects of FR leaves extract on the rhabdomyosarcoma (RD) cells morphology, cell viability, and cell migration ability were investigated by light microscopy, MTT assay, and wound healing cell migration assay respectively. The effect of various FR concentrations on RD cells indicated the potential anticancer effect in a dose dependent manner. The results of low dose di-combinations (FR-chemo, FR-PDT) and tri-combinations (FR-chemo-PDT) were synergistic. The % cell viability was reduced to 29% for FR-Dox-HCl-PDT and 44% for FR-DTIC-PDT combinations. A pronounced cytotoxic effect and cell migration was observed in tri-combination therapy as compared to di- and mono-therapy. This study concluded that FR leaves extract has anticancer effects and gives synergy with chemo and PDT combinations.
