    Abstract: Objective: To measure the effects of cerebral intermittent theta-burst stimulation with physiotherapy on lower extremity motor recovery in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury.Design: Randomized, double-blinded, sham-controlled trial.Subjects: Adults with incomplete spinal cord injury.Methods: A total of 38 patients with incomplete spinal cord injury were randomized into either an intermittent theta-burst stimulation or a sham group. Both groups participated in physiotherapy 5 times per week for 9 weeks, and cerebral intermittent theta-burst stimulation or sham intermittent theta-burst stimulation was performed daily, immediately before physiotherapy. The primary outcomes were lower extremity motor score (LEMS), root-mean square (RMS), RMS of the quadriceps femoris muscle, walking speed (WS), and stride length (SL). Secondary outcomes comprised Holden Walking Ability Scale (HWAS) and modified Barthel Index (MBI). The outcomes were assessed before the intervention and 9 weeks after the start of the intervention.Results: Nine weeks of cerebral intermittent theta-burst stimulation with physiotherapy intervention resulted in improved recovery of lower extremity motor recovery in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury. Compared with baseline, the changes in LEMS, WS, SL, RMS, HWAS, and MBI were significant in both groups after intervention. The LEMS, WS, SL, RMS, HWAS, and MBI scores were improved more in the intermittent theta-burst stimulation group than in the sham group.Conclusion: Cerebral intermittent theta-burst stimulation with physiotherapy promotes lower extremity motor recovery in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury. However, this study included a small sample size and lacked a comparison of the treatment effects of multiple stimulation modes, the further research will be required in the future. LAY ABSTRACTSpinal cord injury is a serious condition caused by spinal trauma and tumours. Improving the patient’s limb function during recovery poses an important challenge. Transcranial magnetic stimulation technology is a new treatment used to improve nervous system function, which has shown promising results in treating spinal cord injuries in recent years. However, the effect of a specific type of magnetic stimulation, cerebral intermittent theta-burst stimulation, with routine physical therapy on lower extremity motor recovery in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury has not yet been explored. The results of this study suggest that 9 weeks of brain intermittent theta-burst stimulation combined with physical therapy has a positive short-term effect on lower extremity movement and recovery of daily living ability in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury, which might provide new insight into motor rehabilitation for spinal cord injury.

    Abstract: 〈abstract〉〈p〉Effective path planning (PP) is the basis of autonomous navigation for mobile robots. Since the PP is an NP-hard problem, intelligent optimization algorithms have become a popular option to solve this problem. As a classic evolutionary algorithm, the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm has been applied to solve numerous realistic optimization problems. In this study, we propose an improved artificial bee colony algorithm (IMO-ABC) to deal with the multi-objective PP problem for a mobile robot. Path length and path safety were optimized as two objectives. Considering the complexity of the multi-objective PP problem, a well-environment model and a path encoding method are designed to make solutions feasible. In addition, a hybrid initialization strategy is applied to generate efficient feasible solutions. Subsequently, path-shortening and path-crossing operators are developed and embedded in the IMO-ABC algorithm. Meanwhile, a variable neighborhood local search strategy and a global search strategy, which could enhance exploitation and exploration, respectively, are proposed. Finally, representative maps including a real environment map are employed for simulation tests. The effectiveness of the proposed strategies is verified through numerous comparisons and statistical analyses. Simulation results show that the proposed IMO-ABC yields better solutions with respect to hypervolume and set coverage metrics for the later decision-maker.〈/p〉〈/abstract〉

    Abstract: To examine the impact of demographic, socioeconomic, and behavioral factors on the development of cardiometabolic multimorbidity and mortality in Chinese elders. Methods Data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) 2002–2018 was used in the study. Cardiometabolic multimorbidity was defined as the presence of two or more cardiometabolic disorders, such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), heart disease, or stroke. Cox regression model and multi-state Markov model were developed to evaluate the association of the study factors with the progression of cardiometabolic conditions and mortality. The outcomes included three states (first cardiometabolic disease, cardiometabolic multimorbidity, and all-cause mortality) and five possible transitions among the three states. Results Of the 13,933 eligible individuals, 7,917 (56.8%) were female, and 9,540 (68.50%) were over 80 years old. 2,766 (19.9%) participants had their first cardiometabolic disease, 975 (7.0%) participants suffered from cardiometabolic multimorbidity, and 9,365 (67.2%) participants died. The progression to cardiometabolic multimorbidity was positively associated with being female (HR = 1.42; 95%CI, 1.10 − 1.85), living in the city (HR = 1.41; 95%CI, 1.04 − 1.93), overweight (HR = 1.43; 95%CI, 1.08 − 1.90), and obesity (HR = 1.75; 95% CI, 1.03 − 2.98). A higher risk for the first cardiometabolic disease was associated with being female (HR = 1.26; 95% CI, 1.15 − 1.39), higher socioeconomic status (SES, HR = 1.17; 95%CI, 1.07 − 1.28), lack of regular physical activity (HR = 1.13; 95%CI, 1.04 − 1.23), smoking (HR = 1.20; 95%CI, 1.08 − 1.33), ≤ 5 h sleep time (HR = 1.15; 95%CI, 1.02 − 1.30), overweight (HR = 1.48; 95% CI, 1.32 − 1.66), and obesity (HR = 1.34; 95%CI, 1.06 − 1.69). It also should be noted that not in marriage, lower SES and unhealthy behavioral patterns were risk factors for mortality. Conclusion This study emphasized the importance of lifestyle and SES in tackling the development of cardiometabolic conditions among Chinese elders and provided a reference for policy-makers to develop a tailored stage-specific intervention strategy.

    Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between long-term trajectories of changes in cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) and the risk of cognitive impairment among Chinese adults over 60 years old. Methods Data were obtained from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey 2005–2018. Cognitive function was evaluated longitudinally through the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (C-MMSE), and cognitive impairment (C-MMSE ≤23) was used as the main outcome variable. The cardiovascular risk factors, including systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), pulse pressure (PP), and body mass index (BMI), were continuously measured in the follow-up duration. The patterns of trajectories of changes in CVRFs were derived from the latent growth mixture model (LGMM). The Cox regression model was used to evaluate the cognitive impairment hazard ratio (HR) across different CVRF trajectories. Results A total of 5,164 participants aged ≥60 years with normal cognitive function at baseline were included in the study. After a median follow-up of 8 years, 2,071 participants (40.1%) developed cognitive impairment (C-MMSE ≤ 23). The four-class trajectories of SBP and BMI were obtained by means of LGMM, and the trajectories of DBP, MAP, and PP were grouped into a three-class subgroup. In the final adjusted Cox model, the lowered SBP [adjusted HR (aHR): 1.59; 95% CI: 1.17–2.16], lowered PP (aHR: 2.64; 95% CI: 1.66–4.19), and progressively obese (aHR: 1.28; 95% CI: 1.02–1.62) and stable slim (aHR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.02–1.25) were associated with the higher risk of cognitive impairment. Low stable DBP (aHR: 0.80; 95% CI: 0.66–0.96) and elevated PP (aHR: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.63–0.92) decreased the risk for cognitive impairment among participants. Conclusion Lowered SBP, lowered PP, progressive obesity, and stable slim increased the risk for cognitive impairment in the Chinese elderly. Low stable DBP and elevated PP were protective against cognitive impairment, but more DBP lowering and ≥25 mmHg growth in PP contributed to a higher risk of cognitive impairment. The findings have important implications for preventing cognitive impairment in elder adults based on the long-term trajectories of changes in CVRFs.

    Abstract: In this investigation, we aimed to address the pressing challenge of treating osteosarcoma, a prevalent and difficult-to-treat form of cancer. To achieve this, we developed a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model focused on a specific class of compounds called 2-Phenyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl) thiazolidin-4-one derivatives. A set of 39 compounds was thoroughly examined, with 31 compounds assigned to the training set and 8 compounds allocated to the test set randomly. The goal was to predict the IC 50 value of these compounds accurately. To optimize the compounds and construct predictive models, we employed a heuristic method of the CODESSA program. In addition to a linear model using four carefully selected descriptors, we also developed a nonlinear model using the gene expression programming method. The heuristic method resulted in correlation coefficients ( R 2 ) of 0.603, 0.482, and 0.107 for R 2 cv and S 2 , respectively. On the other hand, the gene expression programming method achieved higher R 2 and S 2 values of 0.839 and 0.037 in the training set, and 0.760 and 0.157 in the test set, respectively. Both methods demonstrated excellent predictive performance, but the gene expression programming method exhibited greater consistency with experimental values. The successful nonlinear model generated through gene expression programming shows promising potential for designing targeted drugs to combat osteosarcoma effectively. This approach offers a valuable tool for optimizing compound selection and guiding future drug discovery efforts in the battle against osteosarcoma.

    Abstract: The present study evaluated the protection of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CCFM8661, a candidate probiotic with excellent benzopyrene (B[a]P)-binding capacity in vitro , against B[a]P-induced toxicity in the colon and brain of mice. Mice that received B[a] P alone served as the model group. Each mouse in the L. plantarum treatment groups were administered 2×10 9 colony forming unit (CFU) of L. plantarum strains once daily, followed by an oral dose of B[a]P at 50 mg/kg body weight. Behavior, biochemical indicators in the colon and brain tissue, and the gut microbiota composition and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels in the gut were investigated. Compared to the treatment in the model group, CCFM8661 treatment effectively reduced oxidative stress in the brain, improved behavioral performance, increased intestinal barrier integrity, and alleviated histopathological changes in mice. Moreover, CCFM8661 increased the gut microbiota diversity and abundance of Ruminococcus and Lachnospiraceae and reduced the abundance of pro-inflammatory Turicibacter spp. Additionally, the production of SCFAs was significantly increased by L. plantarum CCFM8661. Our results suggest that CCFM8661 is effective against acute B[a]P-induced toxicity in mice and that it can be considered as an effective and easy dietary intervention against B[a] P toxicity.

    Abstract: Understanding the occurrence and severity of child injuries is the cornerstone of preventing child injuries. Currently, there is no standardized child injury surveillance dataset in China. Methods Multistage consultation by a panel of Chinese experts in child injury to determine items to include in the core dataset (CDS) was performed. The experts participated in two rounds of the modified Delphi method comprising a consultation questionnaire investigation (Round 1) and a face-to-face panel discussion (Round 2). Final consensus was established based on the opinions of the experts regarding the modified CDS information collection items. Enthusiasm and authority exhibited by the experts were evaluated by the response rate and using the expert authority coefficient, respectively. Results The expert panel included 16 experts in Round 1 and 15 experts in Round 2. The experts during both rounds had a high degree of authority, with an average authority coefficient of 0.86. The enthusiasm of the experts was 94.12%, and the proportion of suggestions reached 81.25% in Round 1 of the modified Delphi method. The draft CDS evaluated in Round 1 included 24 items, and expert panelists could submit recommendations to add items. Based on findings in Round 1, four additional items, including nationality, residence, type of family residence, and primary caregiver were added to the draft of the CDS for Round 2. After Round 2, consensus was reached on 32 items arranged into four domains—general demographic information, injury characteristics, clinical diagnosis and treatment, and injury outcome—to include in the final CDS. Conclusion The development of a child injury surveillance CDS could contribute to standardized data collection, collation, and analysis. The CDS developed here could be used to identify actionable characteristics of child injury to assist health policymakers in designing evidence-based injury prevention interventions.

    Abstract: 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2-AP) is the key compound of rice aroma. However, the responses of 2-AP biosynthesis in fragrant rice under different soil moisture and the corresponding mechanism are little known. The present study evaluated the effects of different soil moisture on 2-AP biosynthesis through a pot experiment. Four soil moisture contents, that is, 50% (SM50), 40% (SM40), 30% (SM30), and 20% (SM20), were adopted, and SM50 treatment was taken as control. The pots were weighed and watered to maintain the corresponding soil moisture content. The results showed no significant difference in growth parameters (plant height, stem diameter, and plant dry weight) among all treatments. Compared with SM50, SM40, SM30, and SM20 treatments significantly ( p & lt;0.05) increased 2-AP content by 32.81, 23.18, and 53.12%, respectively. Between 20 to 90% higher proline content was observed in SM40, SM30, and SM20 treatments than in SM50. Enzymes including proline dehydrogenase, ornithine transaminase, and 1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase exhibited lower activities with soil moisture declined. Higher diamine oxidase activity was observed in SM40, SM30, and SM20 treatments compared with SM50, and real-time PCR analyses showed that transcript level of DAO1 was greatly increased under low soil moisture treatments, especially in SM20 treatment. Transcript levels of PRODH , DAO2 , DAO4 , DAO5 , OAT , P5CS1 , and P5CS2 decreased or maintained in SM40, SM30, and SM20 treatments compared with SM50. We deduced that low soil moisture content enhanced 2-AP biosynthesis mainly by upregulating the expression of DAO1 to promote the conversion from putrescine to 2-AP.
