Abstract: Background: Diabetes is one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) all over the world and leading cause of death, disability, and economic loss. Diabetes imposes a heavy economic burden on individuals, their families and society as a whole. The aim of this study is to estimate the economic burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Bangladesh and to find association between glycemic control and Health Related Quality of Life with cost-of-illness (COI). Methodology: This will be an analytical cross-sectional cost-of-illness study. Within a specific time period participants aged ≥18 years, registered with Bangladesh Diabetic Somiti and having type 2 diabetes for more than one year will be recruited from selected hospitals inside and outside Dhaka to cover all level of health care services. A pre-tested electronic questionnaire will be used for data collection. The questionnaire will include demographic, clinical, behavioral information of the participants and all cost related information related to diabetes management during last one year. Descriptive statistics will include mean (±SD) or median (percentile) or relative frequencies (percentage) depending on the data. Two samples independent t-test or Mann-Whitney U-test, ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test and chi-squared tests will be used for univariate analysis. The multivariable regression analysis and bootstrap method will also be employed to analyze the relationship between the total cost of care (dependent variable) and several potential explanatory variables (independent variables). Logistic regression analysis will be performed to assess the factors affecting glycemic control and health related quality of life (HRQoL). The calculated total cost-of-illness will be projected for T2DM in Bangladesh by a mathematical modelling. Result & discussion: The results of the study will be useful as background information to forecast the economic burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Bangladesh and will be beneficial to conceptualize health strategies at national level. Furthermore, recognizing the factors of cost-of-illness will help both patients and health care providers to improve the management plan and cost control and hence, to have better quality of life. Evidence about the magnitude of the burden of T2DM is important for public health policymakers who are involved in making health care priorities and allocating scarce resources to facilitate the greatest benefits for type 2 diabetic people in Bangladesh. Abstract: The health professionals require scientific knowledge to advise their patients on complementary and alternative medicines (CAM). Previously, several studies were conducted regarding the CAM perception, attitude and use on health care professionals only; in contrast, our study encompasses both students of health care professionals and other disciplines. The aim of this study was to compare the attitudes and perception about CAM practices between students of biological sciences (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Botany) and health care professionals (Pharmacy and medical students) in public and private universities located in the southeastern region in Bangladesh. The questionnaire-based study conducted on 332 systematically sampled students (four private and one public universities) located in the southeastern region in Bangladesh. The cross-sectional study was conducted from March to July, 2018. All students showed a positive attitude towards CAM use. Herbal medicine, homeopathy, nutritional supplements followed by hypnosis, massage, spiritual healing, and meditation were the most commonly known and used CAM modalities. Most of the students (40.7%) believed that the integration of CAM and conventional medicine should be essential in health care setting. The major obstacles for CAM use are patient interest (48.2%) and lack of physician interest (43.4%). In addition, 36.7% students believed that CAM practices should be included in their school’s curriculum. Moreover, 39.5% students assumed that CAM knowledge is important to their daily life. Biological sciences and healthcare professional students of Bangladesh showed positive perception on CAM uses. Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Journal 24(2): 159-167, 2021

Abstract: Background: Acute intestinal obstruction occurs when there is an interruption in the forward flow of intestinal contents. This interruption can occur at any point along the length of the gastrointestinal tract, and clinical symptoms often vary based on the level of obstruction. Objectives: To evaluate the causes of obstruction of patients who were treated conservatively for acute intestinal obstruction. Materials & Method: A cross-sectional observational study. The study was carried out in the Surgery In-patient Department of Comilla Medical College Hospital, Comilla, from 01.07.2013 to 31.12.2013. A total of 246 patients got admitted to the surgery in-patient department and diagnosed as a case of intestinal obstruction. 101 patients of both sex, aged 23-79 responded to initial conservative treatment and were recruited for the study. The remaining 145 patients underwent emergency surgery for intestinal obstruction and were excluded from the study. All data gathered from the data collection sheet was compiled manually. After compilation, these data were shifted to statistical analysis software for further analysis. Results: Out of 246 intestinal obstruction patients, we recorded 101 patients who responded to conservative management. 59 (58.4%) patients were male, and the remaining were female. Peak Incidence (45.5%) was in 51-66 years age group. 54(53.4%) patients presented with large bowel obstruction, the remaining with small bowel obstruction. Most of the patients 68 (67.3%), presented with sub-acute obstruction, followed by acute 28 (27.7%) and chronic 5 (4.9%) obstruction, respectively. 12(11.8%) patients were diagnosed with colorectal carcinoma, 5(4.9%) patients with intestinal TB, and 1(0.9%) patient with diverticulosis. 10(83.3%) of the patients with Colorectal carcinoma were in the elderly age group ( 〉 50 years) whereas two patients were below 80 years of age. The cause of obstruction could not be detected in 83 (82.2%) patients by colonoscopy. ..............
