Abstract: Nepal universities are in a delicate transition now. The enrolment of students is not encouraging; rather it is declining over the years particularly in public universities. Consequently, the outflow of Nepalese students has got momentum over two decades; and nearly a half-million Nepalese students are currently enrolled in foreign universities. The quality education in Nepalese universities is crucial for the return as well as the significant inflow of Nepalese students in the universities of their homeland. However, higher education requires a sustainability plan particularly for the resource generation and promotion of scientific research/publications. Long-term vision, mission, and strategic measures are particularly lacking in Nepal universities. This requires setting objectives and attainable milestones along with specific strategic measures and financial planning that are missing now. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, it proposes a monitoring framework in the form of a regression model to use as a tool and observe the improvement in higher education in the country. Secondly, it has proposed a typical Sustainability Plan considered appropriate to Nepal; however, it might be equally replicable to other universities of the developing world. Moreover, it has also suggested measures to make such a plan a success.

Abstract: Slightly more than one third of the global meat consumed comes from chickens. Various studies have been carried out on the use of bee pollen or probiotics in broiler feed; however, very limited studies have been carried out about their combined effect on broiler production. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of feeding by pollen and probiotics on broiler chicken Cobb 500. The effect of different concentrations of commercial bee pollen and probiotics was evaluated on growth performance, organs, and thigh meat pH of 45 days old chickens. The rate of body weight gain on day 21, 33, and 39 were significantly different among treatment and control groups and on day 33 d, all the experimental groups showed significant increase in weight gain as compared to control. T3 treatment had highest weight gain (380 g) on day 45. Some of the organs such as lung, digestive system, and intestine length were also significantly affected by the application of bee pollen and probiotics. The broilers fed with bee pollen and probiotics were found to have increased but more stable pH of thigh meat as compared to that of control at 24 hours of low temperature (-20°C) storage. At 24 h, T2 treatment showed highest pH value(6.52) for thigh meat Results of the present study indicated that the meat quality of broiler could be improved with the use of bee pollen and probiotics as they could increase and keep the pH stable during storage.

Abstract: The real benefits of integrating different economic areas and regions into one common economic, monetary, and sometimes also fiscal area are among the most important issues to be resolved because the win-win situation for all participants should prevail unless the Member States or local authorities lose their interest in further participation. In this study, we compare the speed and the real benefits of economic integration between the three groups of Member States that emerged following the last big EU enlargement. The first group is composed of the so-called old EU Member States. The second group represents the countries that achieved full membership in 2004 (the so-called new Member States), and in the third group, there are the countries that are now in the negotiation process for EU membership. We then draw from the experience of these new Member States to derive implications for a possible new round of EU enlargement. The conclusion of this paper is therefore supposed to be some kind of direction for the new candidate countries. The results offer an answer to the question of what degree of convergence the new EU10 Member States reached within certain macroeconomic fundamentals during the period of their accession negotiations. Keywords: • economic convergence • EU integration • transition economies • integration • EU accession • economic trends

Abstract: Value Added Tax (VAT) has become an integral part of domestic tax reforms in many developing countries. Taking the case of Nepal, VAT associates a number of refunds to different private sector activities for promoting investment in higher growth and export potential sectors. Total refund, more specifically, export refund has a significant positive impact on the level of GDP. Furthermore, non-agricultural GDP has strong positive influence to VAT C-efficiency ratio. Likewise, higher the VAT gap, lower is the C-efficiency ratio. If C-efficiency is improved coupled with higher compliance, the capability of the government is strengthened in domestic revenue generation.

Abstract: Background: When the Nepal Medical Council Act was enacted in 1964 it was accepted that it would be responsible for the regulation of Medical Education in Nepal. Subsequently followed the establishments of medical colleges of which Kathmandu Medical College is one.Present Status: Kathmandu Medical College started the MBBS program back in 1997 and has since then developed over the years. The development of medical education at Kathmandu Medical College ensued subsequently with the formation of Medical Education Unit Teacher Training Cell on June 2001. First batch of teacher’s training was held on February 2003 and since then the Medical Education Department has remained active. It was in the year 2014 that Medical Education Department was strengthened further and different committees and sub-committees were formed to develop the standard of medical education to new heights. Conclusion: The medical education has developed over the years as has been recorded in this paper. There are shortcomings to be corrected. For medical education to develop further, specific steps need to be carried out in future years to meet the challenges of international accreditation.

Abstract: Introduction: Self-medication signifies using drugs that have not been prescribed, recommended or controlled by a licensed health professional. At present self medication is reportedly a global issue and the practice is predominant in developing and under-developed countries. The main aim of this study is to try and uncover the attitude and practice of students in a medical school located inside Kathmandu valley towards prescription and self-medication Methods: A total of 104 students currently studying in one of the medical schools located inside Kathmandu Valley was provided a informed implied and verbal consent to participate in the study. All students were given a pre-validated, semi-structured questionnaire inside a lecture hall in their free hours between lectures. The data was analyzed and chi square test was done (p value 〈 0.05) to see the association between medical students and their mind-set towards self medication. Results: Among the total respondents, 80.8% thought that self medication was a part of self-care and 89.4% planned to continue self medication, 47.1% of them reported that they would advise their friends to stop practicing self medication, 70% reported having a registered medical practitioner with permission to prescribe medicines within 5-9 minutes walking distance from their abode, whereas around 1% reported that they self medicated so that they would not disturb the practioners. From the total, 6.7% presented with some side effects and had to visit the hospital Conclusions: High incidence of self medication among undergraduate medical students might be able to sense false entitlement of almost being a doctor with authority to prescribe soon.

Abstract: Over the past few years, the topic of marijuana is featured in the media. Students have an ambiguous information on the medical benefits and the torment of marijuana use. Students under minimum supervision from their guardians are among high risk groups of its abuse. The abuse of marijuana among students is associated with the cognitive impairment, adverse academic performance and the low-level satisfaction of life. Aims: To find out the prevalence of marijuana abuse among college students staying away from their parents. Place and Duration of Study:  Sample: 10 colleges from 5 wards of BBMP between February 2014 to February 2015. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional survey (n=250). Qualitative (interview) and quantitative (structured questionnaire) were used to collect the data about the current use of marijuana, smoking habit, perceived effect and source of supply among Nepalese students studying in Bangalore. The Current user is defined according to the CDC guideline (An adult who has smoked 100 times in his lifetime and who currently smokes marijuana. Findings: The current prevalence of marijuana abuse among male Nepalese students in Bangalore is 36%. At least one-time usage of marijuana is 51%. Among current users, 38% are using marijuana daily. Similarly, 37% of the participants reported that local friends are the source of supply for them and 32% reported that they get marijuana from college friends. Among current users, about 58% of the users said that they don’t want to quit using marijuana. Conclusion: It is evident from the study that marijuana use is widespread amongst Nepalese students in Bangalore. The parents whose children are away from home town should maintain a very close relationship with them, their academic supervisors, and their friends. A significant number of current users (41%) wish to quit the addiction of marijuana use, this demand an immediate need for the mental health counselor in the colleges in Bangalore.

Abstract: Many economic reforms in developing economies are, in fact, price deregulation in the product markets and trade liberalisation, concerning whether the growth of exports accelerates. This paper, however, attempts to offer a new flavour in the policy reforms using fixed price model to study the growth impact of different sectoral investments and transfers to households. We used Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) multipliers to analyse the flow structure and distributional effects of sectoral investments and transfers in a typical developing economy. Using the case of Nepal we simulate the effects of additional demand creations to sectors and transfer earning growth to households and measure their effects and conclude that in the given flow structure, the additional sector demand and transfer growth in the economy benefit the middle income groups more; whereas the benefit to the poorest is only modest. We examine the effects of potential pro-poor economic restructuring measures especially with regard to the improvements of efficiency parameters and redirection of factor endowments. Consequently, poor households transfer towards those activities which have higher multiplier effects of additional demand and transfer earning. Furthermore, redirection of factor endowments requires undergoing with the skill upgrade of poor labour to be conducive with higher economic growth.
