Kurzfassung: OBJECTIVE: Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infectious disease caused by microorganisms belonging to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBK) group. This disease is treated and controlled with antituberculosis drugs; but sometimes it may not respond to medications. Investigation of drug resistance in tuberculosis, forms the basis of tuberculosis control and treatment programs.MATERIAL AND METHODS: In our study, it was aimed to investigate the susceptibility of MTBK isolate, isolated in our laboratory to primary antituberculosis drugs and to determine their resistance patterns. Between 2011 and 2019, 8804 clinical samples sent to the microbiology laboratory with the suspicion of tuberculosis were evaluated in our clinic.RESULTS: Tuberculosis culture was positive in 126 of the samples included in the study. Anti-tuberculosis susceptibility test was applied to 126 samples (1.4%). 28 (22.3%) isolates were found to be resistant to at least one of the tested antituberculosis drugs tested. Multidrug resistance was found at the rate of 2.38%.CONCLUSIONS: In order to prevent the development of resistance in the treatment of tuberculosis and to provide a healthy treatment, culture and antibiotic sensitivity tests should be performed for each patient and data should be obtained.

Kurzfassung: OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the, knowledge level of medical faculty students about the branch of chest diseases, the factors affecting their speciality preferences, and the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on their speciality preferences.MATERIAL AND METHODS: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out with the participation of 327 students studying at Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University Faculty of Medicine. The students completed a 21-item online questionnaire to provide demographic data, level of knowledge about pulmonology, speciality preferences, and to determine the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the speciality preference.RESULTS: A total of 327 students, 187 (57.2%) female and 140 (42.8%) male, were included in the study. Among the participants, the number of those who knew the diseases in the field of interest of pulmonology was 273 (88.9%). On the subject of interventional procedures for chest diseases, 113 (54.0%) of the participants had correct information. The specialities most requested by the students after graduating from the medical faculty, were internal diseases by 26 (7.9%), ophthalmology by 24 (7.33%) and gynaecology and obstetrics by 24 (7.33%), respectively. The most important factor affecting the speciality preference was reported to be a lower risk of malpractice compared to other speciality by 81 (24.7%). A total of 101 (31.4%) students reported that the pandemic period would affect their speciality preference.CONCLUSIONS: Medical faculty students had sufficient knowledge about the specialist branch of chest diseases. The most important factor affecting the speciality preference of the medical faculty students was the interest in the field of specialization, risk of malpractice. financial satisfaction, less communication with patients and their relatives, academic career opportunity, professional satisfaction. The COVID-19 pandemic may have a negative effect on the speciality preferences of the medical faculty students.

Kurzfassung: Conventional transbronchial needle aspiration (cTBNA) biopsy is a diagnostic minimally invasive technique applied using fibreoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) in the evaluation of mediastinal/hilar lymph nodes. With the development of endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) devices, transbronchial aspiration needles have been revised for use according to the EBUS guidelines. The main aim of this research was to evaluate the diagnostic success of transbronchial aspiration needles that was produced for EBUS when it was applied with FOB instead of conventional TBNA. A retrospective examination was made with the data of 35 patients applied with FOB TBNA, using needles specifically designed for EBUS and 36 patients with conventional TBNA (cTBNA group), for lung cancer staging or the diagnosis of mediastinal lymphadenopathy between November 2018 and November 2019. Seventy-two and sixty procedures performed on 71 patients were included in the study. Diagnostic efficiency for TBNA and cTBNA groups were 91.4% and 83.3%, respectively. Conventional TBNA is still acceptable when the low cost and ease of application are taken into consideration. In conclusion, improvement of current conventional TBNA needles similar to EBUS-TBNA needles for more efficient aspiration capacity could be the first stepto increasing the TBNA diagnostic yield. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to confirm our results.

Kurzfassung: COVID-19 is an infectious disease that is transmitted by the respiratory tract and was first identified in the Wuhan province of China. The causative agent of the disease is SARS-CoV-2. There is little known about this disease and its agent, which affected the whole world in a short time and became a pandemic. Molecular interactions between COVID-19 and chronic respiratory diseases are unknown. In this study, we examined the patients admitted to our outpatient clinic with the diagnosis of Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) exacerbation. We investigated how much of the exacerbations during the pandemic period are caused by the COVID-19 virus and whether there have been any changes in the treatment of and approaches to exacerbations stemming from COVID-19. COVID-19 was detected in 135 of the patients. Clinically, fever, myalgia, and headache findings were significantly more common in patients with a positive COVID-19 PCR CoV 2 test in patients who were diagnosed with an attack of Asthma or exacerbation of COPD (p 〈 0.001). The number of hospitalizations, the need for intensive care, the need for ventilation support, and the number of mortality were high in asthma and COPD patients with positiveSARS- CoV-2 tests (p 〈 0.05 ). Based on the results of our study, patients with COPD and asthma exacerbations due to COVID-19 should be evaluated from a wider perspective. As is known, chronic diseases are poor prognostic factors for COVID-19, but asthma and COPD chronic disease are prominent among them. If there is a need for different approaches for the treatment of these patients, these approaches should be determined urgently.

Kurzfassung: Introduction: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a disease characterized by recurrent complete (apnea) or partial (hypopnea) upper respiratory tract obstructions episodes during sleep and often a decrease in blood oxygen saturation. The knowledge and attitude of physicians about OSA is very important as it influences the level of clinical suspicion of OSA which can lead to diagnose. Therefore, aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of and attitude to OSA of physicians. Material and Method: This descriptive, cross-sectional survey study included 105 physicians in a university hospital. Participants completed the Obstructive Sleep Apnea Knowledge and Attitudes (OSAKA) questionnaire through the face-to-face interview method. Results:The study respondents comprised 55 (52.8%) males and 50 (47.6%) females with a mean age of 34.4±7.3 years (range, 23-59 years). The years of experience was mean 10.45±7.37 years (range, 1–35 years). The knowledge level of physicians was mean score of 11.56±2.70 (64.1%). Attitude section, the mean score was 16.34±2.47 from a possible maximum of 25. A positive correlation was determined between the knowledge and the attitude scores of the physicians (r: 0.467 p
