    Abstract: In this study, the electrical resistance of the whole body and histological changes of skeletal muscle were investigated in rats according to the increase in radiation dose. A total of 15 male Sprague–Dawley rats (5-weeks-old) were randomly divided into 5 groups (each, n = 3). Each group received 1 Gy, 5 Gy, 10 Gy and 20 Gy systemic exposure, and the non-irradiated group was used as a control for morphological comparison. After attaching an electrode clip to the forelimb of the rat, an AC frequency was applied before and 4 days after irradiation using an impedance/gain-phase analyzer, and the measurement system was automatically controlled with LabVIEW. Comparing to before irradiation after 4 days, the difference in the average impedance values at 1 Gy, 5 Gy, 10 Gy, and 20 Gy was 1188±989 ohm, 3076±2251 ohm, 7650±6836 ohm, and 10478±6250 ohm, respectively. By comparing the normal group and the experimental group, muscle fiber atrophy and collagen fibers around blood vessels were observed (p  〈  0.05, control group vs 5 Gy or more high-dose group). These results confirmed the previously reported morphological changes of skeletal muscle and our hypothesis that whole-body impedance measurement enables to reflect tissue changes after irradiation.

    Abstract: This study analyzes the response of increasing radiation dose to the pork tenderloin tissue. Considering its significant cell structure, pork tenderloin tissue samples are selected for the experimental objects to measure their electrical impedance characteristics. This study proposes and investigates an effective approach to characterize the variation of the internal change of the components of pork tenderloin tissues caused by radiation. Changes in the pork tenderloin tissues are that the gap of the myotome is more far apart with increase of radiation dose because of the destroyed Myofibrils under the damage. With the increase of radiation dose, the impedance value of the pork tenderloin tissue decreases. Each of mean differences in the impedance values before and after irradiation dose under 1 Gy, 2 Gy and 4 Gy show 0.55±0.03, 1.09±0.14 and 1.97±0.14, respectively. However, the mean difference substantially increases to 13.08±0.16 at irradiation dose of 10 Gy. Thus, the cell membrane shows the most severe rupture at a radiation dose of 10 Gy. Changes in the microstructure of the irradiated pork tenderloin tissue samples are also checked and validated by a transmission electron microscope.

    Abstract: Introduction: Typhoid incidence in children is higher in urban areas than in rural areas of Bangladesh. This study examined whether healthy urban children harboured higher levels of Salmonella genes than healthy rural children. Methodology: Stool samples from 140 children were studied: 70 from rural areas and 70 from urban metropolitan areas. Results: The stool samples of urban children contained more Salmonella genes (median 4, IQR 3-4) than those of rural children (median 3, IQR 3-4). This suggests that urban Bangladeshi children have more Salmonella genes in their guts than rural children. Especially, in those under 12 months of age, the Salmonella gene prevalence in urban children was unique. They had more Salmonella genes (median 4, IQR 4-5) than rural children in the same age group (median 3, IQR 2.5-4). We also found more Salmonella genes in urban children who drank tap water (median 4, IQR 3-5) than in rural children whose water source was tube well water (median 3, IQR 2-4) and boiled pond water (median 3, IQR 3-3.5). However, there was no significant difference of Salmonella genes between urban children who drank tap-water and children whose water source was a tube well (median 4, IQR 3-4). Conclusions: These data suggest that the urban environment, including the drinking water supply system, increases the likelihood of healthy children in urban areas harbouring more potentially pathogenic Salmonella organisms in their gut than found in rural healthy children.

    Abstract: We compared the ischemic core and hypoperfused tissue volumes estimated by RAPID and JLK-CTP, a newly developed automated computed tomography perfusion (CTP) analysis package. We also assessed agreement between ischemic core volumes by two software packages against early follow-up infarct volumes on diffusion-weighted images (DWI). Methods This retrospective study analyzed 327 patients admitted to a single stroke center in Korea from January 2021 to May 2023, who underwent CTP scans within 24 h of onset. The concordance correlation coefficient ( ρ ) and Bland–Altman plots were utilized to compare the volumes of ischemic core and hypoperfused tissue volumes between the software packages. Agreement with early (within 3 h from CTP) follow-up infarct volumes on diffusion-weighted imaging ( n = 217) was also evaluated. Results The mean age was 70.7 ± 13.0 and 137 (41.9%) were female. Ischemic core volumes by JLK-CTP and RAPID at the threshold of relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF) & lt; 30% showed excellent agreement ( ρ = 0.958 [95% CI, 0.949 to 0.966]). Excellent agreement was also observed for time to a maximum of the residue function ( T max ) & gt; 6 s between JLK-CTP and RAPID ( ρ = 0.835 [95% CI, 0.806 to 0.863]). Although early follow-up infarct volume showed substantial agreement in both packages (JLK-CTP, ρ = 0.751 and RAPID, ρ = 0.632), ischemic core volumes at the threshold of rCBF & lt;30% tended to overestimate ischemic core volumes. Conclusion JLK-CTP and RAPID demonstrated remarkable concordance in estimating the volumes of the ischemic core and hypoperfused area based on CTP within 24 h from onset.

    Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To invastgate feasibility of low-dose contrast agent in cerebral computed tomography angiography (CTA) to alleviate side effects. METHOD: Siemens’ Somatom Definition AS+CT scanner, Heine’s blood pressure monitor G7-M237 (BP cuff) and Ultravist contrast agent (370 mg Iodine/ml) are used. CTA is acquired using following scan parameters including slice thickness of 1mm, image acquisition parameters of 128×0.6 mm, pitch size of 0.8 mm, 175 effective mAs, 120 kVp tube voltage, scan delay time of 3 seconds, and the scan time of 4 seconds. This study is conducted by securing the IV route in the left antecubital vein before injection of contrast agent, wrapping BP cuff around the branchial artery of the opposite right arm after setting the pressure to 200 mmHg. Then, the injection rate of the contrast agent is fixed at 4.5 cc/sec and contrast agent was injected in three different amounts (70, 80, and 100 cc). Bp cuff is released from this moment when HU value reachs 100. RESULT: In this study, the mean HU values measured from common carotid artery are 412.45±5.89 when injecting 80cc contrast agent and using BP cuff and 399.64±5.51 when injecting 100 cc contrast agenet and not using BP cuff, respectively. In middle cerebral artery M1, the mean HU values are 325.23±38.29 when injecting 80cc contrast agent and using BP cuff and 325.00±30.63 when injecting 100cc contrast agent blood and not using pressure cuff, respectively. Difference of mean HU values is not statistically significant (p  〉  0.05) with and without using BP cuff. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that reducing amount of contrast agent is possible when the right brachial artery is compressed using BP cuff. Study results indicate that reducing 20% injection of contrast agent in CT cerebrovascular angiography can still yield comparable imaging results with conventional contrast angent usage, which implies that less side effects are expected with a contrast agent injection. Thus, this study can serve as a reference for potential reducing side effect during CT cerebrovascular angiography.

    Abstract: The authors sought to evaluate the usefulness of indocyanine green (ICG) angiography and Doppler sonography for monitoring the vertebral artery (VA) during craniovertebral junction (CVJ) surgery and compare the incidence of VA injury (VAI) between the groups with and without the monitoring of VA using ICG angiography and Doppler sonography. METHODS In total, 344 consecutive patients enrolled who underwent CVJ surgery. Surgery was performed without intraoperative VA monitoring tools in 262 cases (control group) and with VA monitoring tools in 82 cases (monitoring group). The authors compared the incidence of VAI between groups. The procedure times of ICG angiography, change of VA flow velocity measured by Doppler sonography, and complication were investigated. RESULTS There were 4 VAI cases in the control group, and the incidence of VAI was 1.5%. Meanwhile, there were no VAI cases in the monitoring group. The procedure time of ICG angiography was less than 5 minutes (mean [± SD] 4.6 ± 2.1 minutes) and VA flow velocity was 11.2 ± 4.5 cm/sec. There were several cases in which the surgical method had to be changed depending on the VA monitoring. The combined use of ICG angiography and Doppler sonography was useful not only to monitor VA patency but also to assess the quality of blood flow during CVJ surgery, especially in the high-risk group of patients. CONCLUSIONS The combined use of ICG angiography and Doppler sonography enables real-time intraoperative monitoring of the VA by detecting blood flow and flow velocity. As the arteries get closer, they provide auditory and visual feedback to the surgeon. This real-time image guidance could be a useful tool, especially for high-risk patients and inexperienced surgeons, to avoid iatrogenic VAI during any CVJ surgery.

    Abstract: OBJECTIVE: In this study, we present an appropriate angle of incidence to reduce the distortions in images of L4 and L5 during a general anteroposterior radiograph examination. METHOD: We selected 170 patients who had normal radiological findings among those who underwent anteroposterior and lateral examination for lumbar vertebrae. An optimum angle of incidence wa suggested through the statistical analysis by measuring the lumbar lordosis angle and the intervertebral disc angle in these 170 patients. RESULT: We suggested the incident angle (10.28°) of L4 and the incident angle (23.49°) of L5. We compared the distorted area ratios when the incident angle was 0°, 10°, and 23.5° using the ATOM® phantom. The ratio for the L4 decreased from 14.90% to 12.11% and that of the L5 decreased from 15.25% to 13.72% after applying the angle of incidence. We determined the incident angle (9.34°) of L4 and (21.26°) of L5 below 30° of LLA. Thus, we determined the incident angle (11.21°) of L4 and (25.73°) of L5 above 30° of LLA. CONCLUSION: When you apply the optimum angle of incidence, the distortion of image was minimized and an image between the joints adjacent to the anteroposterior vertebral image with an accurate structure was obtained. As a result, we were able to improve the quality of the image and enhance diagnostic information.

    Abstract: Water electrolysis is one of the attractive technologies for producing clean and sustainable hydrogen fuels with high purity. Among the various kinds of water electrolysis systems, anion exchange membrane water electrolysis has received much attention by combining the advantages of alkaline water electrolysis and proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. However, the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction, which is based on multiple and complex reaction mechanisms, is regarded as a major obstacle for the development of high-efficiency water electrolysis. Therefore, the development of high-performance oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts is a prerequisite for the commercialization and wide application of water electrolysis systems. This mini review highlights the current progress of representative oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts that are based on a perovskite structure in alkaline media. We first summarize the research status of various kinds of perovskite-based oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts, reaction mechanisms and activity descriptors. Finally, the challenges facing the development of perovskite-based oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts and a perspective on their future are discussed.
