Abstract: 〈 p class="abstract" 〉 〈 strong 〉 Background: 〈 /strong 〉 Chronic tonsillitis is a disease of childhood with a peak incidence at 5-6 years of age and the commonest organism being Group A beta hemolytic streptococcus (GABHS). Accurate diagnosis of streptococcal infection is essential to limit transmission, reduce the complications and period of communicability. To study the association between blood groups and culture findings of throat swab in chronic tonsillitis among pediatric age group is the aim of our study. 〈 /p 〉 〈 p class="abstract" 〉 〈 strong 〉 Methods: 〈 /strong 〉 60 pediatric patients of clinically diagnosed chronic tonsillitis of both genders who attended outpatient department of otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery VIMS, Ballari, Karnataka, India were included in this study on simple random basis. Throat swabs obtained from them were subjected for culture test along with blood grouping and Rh typing.   〈 /p 〉 〈 p class="abstract" 〉 〈 strong 〉 Results: 〈 /strong 〉 In our study, among 60 patients, who presented with recurrent episodes of throat pain for duration of & lt;1 year were 31 (51.7%), of 1-3 years were 15 (25%) and of & gt;3 years were 14 (23.3%). 42 patients (70%) had grade 3 tonsillar enlargement, 14 (23.3%) had grade 2 and 4 (6.7%) had grade 4 tonsillar enlargement. 22 were of B positive blood group (36.7%), 19 of O positive (31.7%), 12 of A positive (20%) and 7 patients of AB positive blood group (11.7%). 〈 /p 〉 〈 p 〉 〈 strong 〉 Conclusions: 〈 /strong 〉 Statistically significant association is found among school going age group of both genders infected by the 〈 em 〉 Streptococcal 〈 /em 〉 species (p & lt;0.05). Patients of O positive blood group were infected more followed by B positive blood group.  〈 /p 〉

Abstract: 〈 p 〉 〈 strong 〉 Background: 〈 /strong 〉 Alterations in human voice occur frequently and patients usually complain of hoarseness of voice. Laryngeal paralysis is an important differential diagnosis in patients complaining change of voice. Because of simplicity and ease, maximum phonation time (MPT) and S/Z ratio have become the most frequently used clinical tools to assess phonatory mechanics. Published research studying analysis of MPT and S/Z ratio in patients with vocal cord paralysis (VCP) is scanty. Hence this study was taken up to study MPT and S/Z ratios in patients with laryngeal paralysis. 〈 strong 〉 〈 /strong 〉 〈 /p 〉 〈 p 〉 〈 strong 〉 Methods: 〈 /strong 〉 62 patients with VCP were included in our study. Complete history was taken and examination was done in all patients. VCP was confirmed by indirect laryngoscopic examination. The MPT and S/Z ratios were evaluated in a quiet room. Data was analyzed using IBM SPSS Version 22. 〈 strong 〉 〈 /strong 〉 〈 /p 〉 〈 p 〉 〈 strong 〉 Results: 〈 /strong 〉 Mean MPT in males with VCP was 6.71±0.54 and in females it was 6.80±2. Mean S/Z ratio in males was 1.69±0.54, in females 1.59±0.35. The difference between laterality of VCP and MPT was statistically highly significant and the difference between laterality of VCP and S/Z ratio was also statistically highly significant. Our study shows no statistically significant difference in MPT and S/Z ratio with respect to age and gender. There was a significant negative correlation between MPT and S/Z ratio. 〈 strong 〉 〈 /strong 〉 〈 /p 〉 〈 p 〉 〈 strong 〉 Conclusions: 〈 /strong 〉 Irrespective of age and gender MPT and S/Z ratio are simple and effective objective clinical tests to diagnose paralytic laryngeal pathologies. As laryngeal pathology heals on treatment MPT and S/Z ratio are expected to normalize indicating therapeutic progress. 〈 strong 〉 〈 /strong 〉 〈 /p 〉

Abstract: 〈 p class="abstract" 〉 〈 strong 〉 Background: 〈 /strong 〉 To compare the histopathological findings between upper and lower poles of tonsil in pediatric age group keeping in view the local and distant effects of chronic tonsillitis. 〈 /p 〉 〈 p class="abstract" 〉 〈 strong 〉 Methods: 〈 /strong 〉 Three relevant parameters, grade of inflammation (GOI), activity of inflammation and hyperplasia were histopathologically examined in the tonsils of n=60 pediatric patients with chronic tonsillitis who underwent tonsillectomy in Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, VIMS, Ballari, Karnataka, India. These parameters were analyzed and were subjected for statistical analysis.   〈 /p 〉 〈 p class="abstract" 〉 〈 strong 〉 Results: 〈 /strong 〉 In our study, among 60 patients, n=32 (54.2%) were female and n=28 (45.8%) were male. Those aging 5-10 years were n=34 (57.6%) and 11-15 years were n=26 (42.4%). The tonsillar enlargement of grade 3 were present in n=46 patients (77.7%), n= 12 patients (20%) had grade 2 and n=2 patients (1.3%) had grade 4. 〈 /p 〉 〈 p class="abstract" 〉 〈 strong 〉 Conclusions: 〈 /strong 〉 The GOI and hyperplasia parameters in our study have highly significant association statistically (p & lt;0.01) in histopathology of upper poles when compared with lower poles both sides. Further, the activity of inflammation when analyzed was more in upper pole when compared with lower poles both sides, However this parameter in left side upper and lower poles of tonsil was not statistically significant . Among the 60 cases studied, in all the cases, the GOI was of high grade and activity of inflammation and hyperplasia was low grade. Chronic tonsillitis and histopathology of chronically infected tonsils becomes an important step in the management of the disease. 〈 /p 〉
