    Abstract: This study is a preliminary analysis of the causes of upwarping of reinforced concrete slabs of a twin-block slab track, specifically on the subgrade–bridge transition section. The analysis considers the structural features and force characteristics of slab track on the basis of site investigations and numerical simulation, and a corresponding repair method is proposed. It is determined that the temperature and temperature gradient of the slab, the connection status between the slab and the hydraulically bonded layer (HBL), and the position of the terminal spine are the main factors that lead to the upwarping of the slab. Model tests on the force transmission parameters between slab and HBL are carried out to measure the adhesive strength of the cohesive contact and the friction coefficient for the frictional contact. The adhesive strength is found to range from 0.803 to 1.57 MPa. The actual friction coefficient with large dispersion varies significantly from 1.5 to 3.0 because of the influence of the strength of the material and the friction roughness. The analysis output shows that the upwarping of the slab decreases with the reduction of temperature and temperature gradient of the slab, but the upwarping increases with the decrease in adhesive strength and friction coefficient. Increasing the number of terminal spines with 4-m spacing, which is optimized after the spacing effect, contributes to the reduction of the slab upwarping. A reasonable layout scheme for anchor pins can significantly improve the integrity and stability of track structure affected by slab upwarping. From the output of the analysis, a repair method that involves setting additional anchor pins between the slab and HBL is thus recommended.

    Abstract: To solve bottlenecks and capacity shortages in railway corridors, it is necessary to consider passengers’ temporal-spatial preferences in conjunction with train dispatching decisions at the line planning stage. A design of the departure and stop plans which is based on the passengers’ preferences would guarantee a high quality of service. This paper presents a line planning optimization model for high-speed railway (HSR) operations that addresses both the operating costs of lines and passengers’ preferences through a bi-level integer programming (IP) problem. Using actual travel data from the Shenzhen–Changsha HSR in China, we investigate passengers’ travel behavior during different time periods and between several origin and destination (OD) pairs to characterize their spatial-temporal preferences. An IP model is then developed that maximizes the degree of passenger departure time satisfaction (DTS) at the higher level and the operating costs of lines at the lower level. Due to the complexity of the problem, a methodology is proposed to find a conflict-free solution for the proposed model to find train frequencies in each block and their stop plans at each station between the upper- and lower-level models. It is shown that a given passenger trip demand between an origin and a destination could become more flexible by analyzing its time characteristics and the DTS. Finally, a case study is presented to show the effectiveness of the model and the solution approach.

    Abstract: A new traffic organization method has been proposed to address the issue of traffic congestion caused by oversaturation through traffic during peak hours at signalized intersections. This method involves the installation of approximately centrosymmetric short straight lanes (CSSLs) to facilitate the passage of through vehicles, aiming to improve the traffic efficiency at signalized intersections. Firstly, two types of intersection designs with CSSLs were investigated, along with their operational principles. Secondly, a capacity model for the CSSL was established, taking into account the probability theory and mutual blockage considerations, as well as a delay model based on vehicle accumulation under oversaturated conditions. Finally, the intersection of Nanxu Road and Huangshan South Road in Zhenjiang City was chosen as an example. A simulation scheme was designed using VISSIM software to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method by implementing CSSLs before and after the intersection. The simulation results indicate that this method effectively increases the capacity of the oversaturated intersection approaches at the intersection and reduces the average delay. Under different lengths of short through lanes and utilization rates, the capacity of the eastbound short through lane and its adjacent lane increased by 20.7%, and the average delay decreased by 14.2% in all cases. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to examine the impact of short through lane capacity and the number of short through lanes on intersection capacity under different traffic volume levels. This analysis provides further insights into the influence of the CSSL on intersection capacity.
