Kurzfassung: Relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) obtained from dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) MRI is adversely impacted by contrast agent leakage in brain tumors. Using simulations, we previously demonstrated that multi-echo DSC-MRI protocols provide improvements in contrast agent dosing, pulse sequence flexibility, and rCBV accuracy. The purpose of this study is to assess the in-vivo performance of dual-echo acquisitions in patients with brain tumors (n = 59). To verify pulse sequence flexibility, four single-dose dual-echo acquisitions were tested with variations in contrast agent dose, flip angle, and repetition time, and the resulting dual-echo rCBV was compared to standard single-echo rCBV obtained with preload (double-dose). Dual-echo rCBV was comparable to standard double-dose single-echo protocols (mean (standard deviation) tumor rCBV 2.17 (1.28) vs. 2.06 (1.20), respectively). High rCBV similarity was observed (CCC = 0.96), which was maintained across both flip angle (CCC = 0.98) and repetition time (CCC = 0.96) permutations, demonstrating that dual-echo acquisitions provide flexibility in acquisition parameters. Furthermore, a single dual-echo acquisition was shown to enable quantification of both perfusion and permeability metrics. In conclusion, single-dose dual-echo acquisitions provide similar rCBV to standard double-dose single-echo acquisitions, suggesting contrast agent dose can be reduced while providing significant pulse sequence flexibility and complementary tumor perfusion and permeability metrics.

Kurzfassung: The productivity and survival of honey bee ( Apis mellifera) colonies depend on queen bee health. Colony-level neonicotinoid exposure has negative effects on reproductive fitness of honey bee queens. However, it is unclear if the observed effects are a direct outcome of neonicotinoid toxicity or result from suboptimal care of developing queens by exposed workers. The aim of this study was to evaluate larval survival, reproductive fitness, and histopathology of honey bee queens exposed to incremental doses (0, 5, 50 ng) of the neonicotinoid thiamethoxam (THI) applied directly to individual late larvae (7 days post-oviposition) of queens. The 5 ng dose represents a calculated high environmental level of exposure for honey bee queen larvae. Morphometric evaluation revealed that the total area of mandibular gland epithelium in queens exposed to 5 and 50 ng THI was reduced by 14% ( P = .12) and 25% ( P = .001), respectively. Decreased mandibular gland size may alter pheromone production, which could in part explain previously observed negative effects of THI on the reproductive fitness of queens. We also found that late larval exposure to THI reduced larval and pupal survival and decreased sperm viability in mated queens. These changes may interfere with queen development and reproductive longevity.

Kurzfassung: HIV-negative patients have substantial mortality from Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP). We lack predictors of HIV-negative PJP-associated mortality. Objective: We aim to characterize the role of prior corticosteroid exposure in PJP-related mortality. Methods: We queried a global research network to identify adult HIV-negative patients with PJP with or without corticosteroid exposure in the preceding year before diagnosis ( n = 8,021). We performed a propensity score-matched analysis to adjust baseline patient characteristics and analyzed outcomes. We follow-up the results with a multicenter ten years retrospective case-control cohort of HIV-negative patients tested for PJP by PCP Direct Fluorescent Antigen. We used a Cox proportional hazards model for survival analysis. Results: 1822 HIV-negative propensity-scored matched patients with prior corticosteroid exposure had significantly increased 10 weeks (16% versus 9%, p  〈  0.0001) and one-year mortality after PJP diagnosis (23% versus 14%, p  〈  0.0001). (1→3)-β-D-glucan (197.6 ± 155.8 versus 63 ± 0 pg/ml, p = 0.014), ferritin levels (1227 ± 2486 versus 768 ± 1060 mcg/l, p = 0.047), lymphopenia (1.5 ± 1.5 versus 2.0 ± 1.6 10 3 cells/µl, p  〈  0.0001) and hypoxia (SatO 2 : 86.7% versus 91.6%, p  〈  0.0001) were higher or worse in those with prior steroid use. Patients who died were more likely to have previously received dexamethasone (35% versus 16%, p  〈  0.001) or prednisone (49% versus 29%, p  〈  0.001). Adjusted Cox proportional-hazard model validation showed an independently increased mortality at 10 weeks (HR: 3.7, CI: 1.5–9.2, p = 0.004) and 1 year (HR: 4.5, CI: 2.0–10.4, p  〈  0.0001) among HIV-negative patients with previous corticosteroid exposure. Conclusion: Preceding corticosteroids in HIV-negative patients with PJP are associated with higher mortality. A higher fungal burden may influence corticosteroid-mediated mortality. Assessment of PJP prophylaxis must become a standard clinical best practice when instituting corticosteroid therapy courses.

Kurzfassung: Observational data on self-injurious behavior spanning 34 mo. is presented to illustrate the importance of a longitudinal analysis across multiple treatments. Five interventions were implemented to increase a subject's positive interactions and decelerate incidents of self-injurious behavior. Although data indicate a continual, steady decrease in the targeted self-injurious behavior, conclusions based on shorter segments of time, as are often reported, would possibly result in different interpretations. The importance of longitudinal analysis of low frequency, high intensity behaviors is discussed in relation to the impact that short-term data analysis can have upon decision-making and treatment.

Kurzfassung: The shortage of competent, caring professionals who see themselves as urban educators has long been recognized as a problem that teacher preparation programs need to address. The authors argue that situating an entire elementary teacher education program in an urban school setting and engaging candidates in ongoing conversations about difficult social issues can make a difference in how graduates see themselves and how they judge their ability to succeed as the next generation of urban teachers.

Kurzfassung: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of mexiletine in the symptomatic treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). METHODS: In this prospective, double-blind study, 29 patients were randomized to receive mexiletine 600 mg/d or matching placebo for 3 weeks. A four-item symptom score (FIS), which rated pain, dysesthesias, paresthesias, and nightly exacerbations of symptoms, and a 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS), which rated pain intensity, were completed by patients before and after treatment. At the end of treatment independent patient and investigator global assessments were made. Patients reported adverse effects after 1 and 3 weeks of treatment. RESULTS: Treatment groups were similar at baseline. The difference between the median changes in FIS scores (mexiletine = 5.5, placebo = 2) was not statistically significant. Overall symptom response was similar in both treatment groups as demonstrated by both global assessments (p = 0.19). The mean change in VAS score from baseline to posttreatment was determined for both groups and the difference between these mean scores was 16.5 mm (95% CI, −7.1 to 40.2 mm) (p = 0.16). Inadequate statistical power (1 — β = 0.40) may have resulted from small sample size, small magnitude of effect, or variability in the measured effect. Adverse effects were more common in the mexiletine group, though not statistically significant. One patient receiving mexiletine was hospitalized for palpitations. CONCLUSIONS: Because of conflicting reports of mexiletine's efficacy in the treatment of symptomatic DPN, this drug should be reserved for patients unresponsive or intolerant to standard therapy, without evidence of heart disease, and with sensations of burning, heat, formication, or stabbing pain.

Kurzfassung: We report the development of the Assessment of Individual Motives—Questionnaire (AIM-Q), a new instrument based on an evolutionary psychology theory of human motivation. It provides multitrait—multimethod (MTMM) assessment of individual differences on 15 motive scales. A total heterogeneous sample of N = 1,251 participated in eight studies that evaluated the homogeneity, internal consistency, test—retest reliability, and MTMM convergent and discriminant validities of the AIM-Q's three methods. These studies generally support the overall strategy of assessing individual differences in multiple evolutionary-based motives with multiple methods. Additional validity studies are underway and, when validated further, the AIM-Q may offer a promising option for evolutionary psychologists and behavioral geneticists wanting to incorporate individual differences into their research but have had to use existing self-report measures of personality, which were not designed for such a purpose. It may also offer clinical and counseling psychologists an additional approach to personality measures for the prediction of behavior.

Kurzfassung: Data collected from a national survey of economic development professionals are used in this study to examine the perceived role of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design–certified and Energy Star–certified buildings in the business recruitment process. A series of ordinal logistic regression models are estimated to examine economic developers’ attitudes toward these buildings after controlling for their personal characteristics and the characteristics of the communities where they work. The results suggest less favorable perceptions about this form of sustainable real estate development in smaller communities and those with weaker economic fundamentals. Furthermore, women employed in economic development are found to have more favorable attitudes toward these buildings than their male counterparts. Increasing support for sustainable real estate development among economic developers working in local government may therefore require a combination of thoughtful policy making, executive education, and greater gender diversity in the profession.

Kurzfassung: Survey data and a series of ordinal logistic regression models are used in this study to determine if individuals employed in different economic development capacities exhibit perceptual congruence or perceptual dissonance about public-private real estate partnerships in ways that are consistent with growth machine theory. The results offer some evidence that this is the case by showing that economic development practitioners employed by local governments view the potential advantages and disadvantages of these partnerships in much the same way as hypothesized members of pro-growth coalitions, while having significantly different views than their peers employed by higher levels of government. At the same time, the perceptual congruence observed between economic development practitioners employed by local governments and representatives of socially oriented nonprofit organizations raises interesting questions about the role members of the latter group play in growth machine politics in an era where federal support for community development and affordable housing programming continues to dwindle.
