Abstract: The Social Success of a False Science : J. K. Lavater's Physiognomy. Facial features correspond to moral and intellectual values : at the end of the 18th century, Lavater reinvented the old physiognomy, endeavouring to guarantee it a new legitimacy by combining the commonsense beliefs which underlie the immediate perception of others with the most representative concepts of the scientific activity of the day. An analysis of this scientific myth in relation to its audience makes it possible to understand the reasons for the success it enjoyed with men and women who were sufficiently educated to recognize the element of science but too removed from scientific work to see the illusory aspects of a doctrine which confirmed them in their dominant place. Physiognomy sets an uncrossable limit to the questioning of social classifications - assuming, that is, that «nature» is not another word for the social order.
