Abstract: Connarus fulvus Planch is populary utilized in the State of Goiás because it is said to be "good for the heart". This paper studied the pharmacological activities of the crude ethanolic extract (EE) of the powdered bark and of the hirosoluble fraction (HF) of the benzine/water partition. The EE and HF produced in rats andmices a decrease in locomotion, certain drowsiness, respiratory problems, insensitivity to pain and weakness of the posterior limbs. These effects were proportional to the administered doses. The DL50 in mice were 210+/-22 and 310+/-52mg/kg, i.p. for the EE and HF, respectively. The HF potenciated barbiturate - induced sleeping-time, reaction time to heat in the hot-plate and, in 80% of the cases, it antagonized the convulsive actions of PENTYLENETETRAZOL but not of STRYCHNINE. It protected the mice, in all of the cases, against the lethal action of PANCURONIUM and potenciated the action of SUCCINYLCHOLINE. in isolated tissues the HF potenciated, in 20% of the cases, contrations of the diaphragm in response to electrical stimulus of the phrenic nerve of the rats and reversed the neuromuscular blonde produced by d-TUBOCURARINE. In rat and guinea pig atriums electrically stimulated neither the chronotropism nor inotropism were altered. The injection of EE nor HF in rats under anesthetics produced hypotension (5 to mg/kg) while higher doses were lethal. The data obtained from studies didn't confirm direct action on the heart. The plant thus presented depressive action in the CNS, analgesic and anticonvulsive action while, it also annuled the effect of CURARE.

Abstract: Εdaphic-nutritional factors influencing aerial and root growth in stands of Eucalyptus deglupta on soils of different texture were investigated. These stands were 3 years old and 3 x 3 m In area. Physical and chemical analyses of soil properties, (porosity, texture, moisture retention, pH, exchangeable bases, organic carbon and total. N content)were. made. Foliar analysis was also conducted. E. drglupta is sensitive to Edaphic conditions, showing total height increment, on more, clayey soil 5 times greater than on sandy soils. Root dry weight was greater in the 0-20 cm horizon of the sandy soil while others soils showed no difference between the horizons studied. Correlation coefficients between aerial and root growth and some soil characteristics (exchangeable bases, organic matter and Alexch aresignificant. Good correlation between height, growth and root was observed in the clayey soil. Foliar contents of Ν, P, Κ and B were low when compared with others species.

Abstract: The goal of this study is to document the occurrence of the genus Ugni Turcz. in Brazil, where it is rare and poorly known. Ugni comprises four species, but only U. myricoides (Kunth) O. Berg occurs in Brazil, in high-elevation areas on Roraima Mountain (State of Roraima) and in the Serra of Neblina (State of Amazonas). This species is only known in the Amazonian herbaria by just one collection. Ugni is easily confused with Myrtus L. due the morphological resemblance between them, but Ugni are shrubs or small trees. Its leaves are small, usually less than 2 cm long, and coriaceous, and have revolute margins and inconspicuous secondary veins; its flowers are solitary and usually have five, sometimes four, white petals with a reddish central spot and usually three, sometimes two, locules per ovary, each with four to 23 ovules; and its fruits have 15 to 20 seeds with C-shaped embryos.

Abstract: Edaphic-nutritional factors influencing aerial and root growth of stands of Carapa guianensis on soils of different textureswere investigated. These stands were 3 years old and 3x3 m in area. Physical and chemical analyses of soil properties (porosity, textuxe, moisture retention, pH, exchangeable cations, organic carbon and total N-content) were made, Foliar nutrient contents werealso analyzed. Height, increment of C. gaianensis was higher in clayey soil than in the others soils analyzed. Correlation coefficients between aerial and toot growth and some soil characteristics (exchangeable bases, organic matter and Al content)were significant. Root dry weightwas considerably higher in the clayey soil. The relation between aerial and radicular growth was greater in sandy soil, showing disproportion of the root systems in relation to the aerial biomass. High foliar, contents of Ca and B, as well aslow Mn content, suggest specific nutritional char acteristics of this species.
