    Abstract: The segmentation of cloud and snow in satellite images is a key step for subsequent image analysis, interpretation, and other applications. In this paper, a cloud and snow segmentation method based on a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) with enhanced encoder–decoder architecture—ED-CNN—is proposed. In this method, the atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) module is used to enhance the encoder, while the decoder is enhanced with the fusion of features from different stages of the encoder, which improves the segmentation accuracy. Comparative experiments show that the proposed method is superior to DeepLabV3+ with Xception and ResNet50. Additionally, a rough-labeled dataset containing 23,520 images and fine-labeled data consisting of 310 images from the TH-1 satellite are created, where we studied the relationship between the quality and quantity of labels and the performance of cloud and snow segmentation. Through experiments on the same network with different datasets, we found that the cloud and snow segmentation performance is related more closely to the quantity of labels rather than their quality. Namely, under the same labeling consumption, using rough-labeled images only performs better than rough-labeled images plus 10% fine-labeled images.

    Abstract: The natural ecological lands, such as forest land, grassland, wetland, etc., constitute the most important factor for maintaining and preserving the earth’s ecosystem, which must be well concerned in the regional function-oriented planning for the sustainability of human economic development. We analyzed and evaluated the change of natural ecological land in the function-oriented planning regions where we applied the major function-oriented zones introduced as a new concept in China. Using the land-use data from 2009 to 2018 that were produced by the National Land Use Survey, we re-classified natural ecological land types into the forest, grassland, wetland, and bare land, and then addressed the changes of natural ecological land types from 2009 to 2018 in the major function-oriented zones. As a result, the area of natural ecological lands generally tended to decrease from 2009 to 2018, while the decreasing trend of natural ecological land areas was controlled after 2015 with the implementation of governmental policies for environment protection and eco-logical projects. Especially, the decrease of forest land area significantly tended to be zero in 2018 in optimal development zones. The decreased areas of natural ecological lands were mostly converted from artificial land from 2008 to 2019. On the other side, the forest lands mostly changed from cropland and grassland in key development zones, agricultural production zones, and key ecological function zones, due to the fact that grassland conversed in afforestation during this period. The evaluation of natural ecological land changes, which could be implemented by using the annual updates of national land-use data in China, is significant to support the government’s spatial regulation design, to reshape the planned regions, and make policies for environmental restoration and protection management.

    Abstract: The relationship between urban human dynamics and land use types has always been an important issue in the study of urban problems in China. This paper used location data from Sina Location Microblog (commonly known as Weibo) users to study the human dynamics of the spatial-temporal characteristics of gender differences in Beijing’s Olympic Village in June 2014. We applied mathematical statistics and Local Moran’s I to analyze the spatial-temporal distribution of Sina Microblog users in 100 m × 100 m grids and land use patterns. The female users outnumbered male users, and the sex ratio ( S R varied under different land use types at different times. Female users outnumbered male users regarding residential land and public green land, but male users outnumbered female users regarding workplace, especially on weekends, as the S R on weekends ( S R was 120.5) was greater than that on weekdays ( S R was 118.8). After a Local Moran’s I analysis, we found that High–High grids are primarily distributed across education and scientific research land and residential land; these grids and their surrounding grids have more female users than male users. Low–Low grids are mainly distributed across sports centers and workplaces on weekdays; these grids and their surrounding grids have fewer female users than male users. The average number of users on Saturday was the highest value and, on weekends, the number of female and male users both increased in commercial land, but male users were more active than female users ( S R was 110).

    Abstract: Despite increases in the spatial resolution of satellite imagery prompting interest in object-based image analysis, few studies have used object-based methods for monitoring changes in coral reefs. This study proposes a high accuracy object-based change detection (OBCD) method intended for coral reef environment, which uses QuickBird and WorldView-2 images. The proposed methodological framework includes image fusion, multi-temporal image segmentation, image differencing, random forests models, and object-area-based accuracy assessment. For validation, we applied the method to images of four coral reef study sites in the South China Sea. We compared the proposed OBCD method with a conventional pixel-based change detection (PBCD) method by implementing both methods under the same conditions. The average overall accuracy of OBCD exceeded 90%, which was approximately 20% higher than PBCD. The OBCD method was free from salt-and-pepper effects and was less prone to images misregistration in terms of change detection accuracy and mapping results. The object-area-based accuracy assessment reached a higher overall accuracy and per-class accuracy than the object-number-based and pixel-number-based accuracy assessment.

    Abstract: Semantic segmentation on high-resolution aerial images plays a significant role in many remote sensing applications. Although the Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) has shown great performance in this task, it still faces the following two challenges: intra-class heterogeneity and inter-class homogeneity. To overcome these two problems, a novel dual-path DCNN, which contains a spatial path and an edge path, is proposed for high-resolution aerial image segmentation. The spatial path, which combines the multi-level and global context features to encode the local and global information, is used to address the intra-class heterogeneity challenge. For inter-class homogeneity problem, a Holistically-nested Edge Detection (HED)-like edge path is employed to detect the semantic boundaries for the guidance of feature learning. Furthermore, we improve the computational efficiency of the network by employing the backbone of MobileNetV2. We enhance the performance of MobileNetV2 with two modifications: (1) replacing the standard convolution in the last four Bottleneck Residual Blocks (BRBs) with atrous convolution; and (2) removing the convolution stride of 2 in the first layer of BRBs 4 and 6. Experimental results on the ISPRS Vaihingen and Potsdam 2D labeling dataset show that the proposed DCNN achieved real-time inference speed on a single GPU card with better performance, compared with the state-of-the-art baselines.

    Abstract: Most of the existing staged evacuation algorithms only consider the impact of crowd density on evacuation partition, but do not take into account the influence of the spatial distribution of occupants and the capacity of exits on the total evacuation time (TET). Therefore, a novel indoor emergency evacuation algorithm based on time equalization is proposed in this paper. All factors affecting TET such as the position and size of each group and the capacity of exits are fully considered in the proposed algorithm, which are uniformly converted into the occupancy time of each exit. An improved Dijkstra algorithm is used to generate evacuation zones according to the proximity relationship and the occupancy time of different exits. The strategy of waiting at the starting point is adopted to ensure that all evacuees are free from congestion during the escape process. In addition, the method of group merging is proposed to further increase the balance among all zones during the partitioning process. The objectives of the proposed algorithm include minimizing the TET of all evacuees, the path length of each escape group, avoiding congestion during the escape process. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm effectively reduces TET and the path length of groups compared with existing algorithms, which improves the efficiency of evacuation and utilization of all exits and can be applied to the various distribution and density of evacuees.
