    Abstract: Portraying functional urban areas provides useful insights for understanding complex urban systems and formulating rational urban plans. Mobile phone user trajectory data are often used to infer the individual activity patterns of people and for functional area identification, but they are difficult to obtain because of personal privacy issues and have the drawback of a sparse spatial and temporal distribution. Deep learning models have been widely utilized in functional area recognition but are limited by the difficulty of acquiring training samples with large data volumes. This paper aims to achieve a fast and automatic identification of large-scale urban functional areas without prior knowledge. This paper uses Nanjing city as a test area, and a self-organizing map (SOM) neural network model based on an improved dynamic time warping (Ndim-DTW) distance is used to automatically identify the function of each building using mobile phone aggregated data containing work and residence attributes. The results show that the recognition accuracy reaches 88.7%, which is 12.4% higher than that of the K-medoids method based on the DTW distance using a single attribute and 7.8% higher than that of the K-medoids method based on the Ndim-DTW distance with multiple attributes, confirming the effectiveness of the multi-attribute mobile phone aggregated data and the SOM model based on the Ndim-DTW distance. Furthermore, at the traffic analysis zone (TAZ) level, this paper detects that Nanjing has seven functional area hotspots with a high degree of mixing. The results can provide a data basis for urban studies on, for example, the urban spatial structure, the separation of occupations and residences, and environmental suitability evaluation.

    Abstract: As a representative indicator for the level and sustainability of urban development, urban vitality has been widely used to assess the quality of urban development. However, urban vitality is too blurry to be accurately quantified and is often limited to a particular type of expression of vitality. Current regression models often fail to accurately express the spatial heterogeneity of vibrancy and drivers. Therefore, this paper took Nanjing as the study area and quantified the social, cultural, and economic vitality indicators based on mobile phone data, POI data, and night-light remote sensing data. We also mapped the spatial distribution of comprehensive urban vitality using an improved entropy method and analyzed the spatial heterogeneity of urban vitality and its influencing factors using a plot boundary-based neural network weighted regression (PBNNWR). The results show: (1) The comprehensive vitality in Nanjing is distributed in a “three-center” pattern with one large and two small centers; (2) PBNNWR can be used to investigate the local regression relationships among the driving factors and urban vitality, and the fitting accuracy (95.6%) of comprehensive vitality in weekdays is higher than that of ordinary least squares regression (OLS) (65.9%), geographically weighted regression (GWR) (89.9%), and geographic neural network weighted regression (GNNWR) (89.5%) models; (3) House price, functional diversity, building density, metro station accessibility, and residential facility density are factors that significantly affect urban vitality. The study’s findings can provide theoretical guidance for optimizing the urban spatial layout, resource allocation, and targeted planning strategies for areas with different vitality values.

    Abstract: It has long been acknowledged that crimes of the same type tend to be committed at the same location or proximity in a short period. However, the investigation of whether this phenomenon exists across crime types remains limited. The spatial-temporal clustered patterns for two types of crimes in public areas (pocket-picking and vehicle/motor vehicle theft) are separately examined. Compared with existing research, this study contributes to current research from three aspects: (1) The repeat and near-repeat phenomenon exists in two types of crimes in a large Chinese city. (2) A significant spatial-temporal interaction between pocket-picking and vehicle/motor vehicle theft exists within a range of 100 m. Some cross-crime type interactions seem to have a stronger ability of prediction than does single-crime type interaction. (3) A risk-avoiding activity is identified after spatial-temporal hotspots of another crime type. The spatial extent with increased risk is limited to a certain distance from the previous hotspots. The experimental results are analyzed and interpreted with current criminology theories.

    Abstract: Mobility and spatial interaction data have become increasingly available due to the widespread adoption of location-aware technologies. Examples of mobile data include human daily activities, vehicle trajectories, and animal movements. In this study we focus on a special type of mobility data, i.e., origin–destination (OD) pairs, and propose a new adapted chord diagram plot to reveal the urban human travel spatial-temporal characteristics and patterns of a seven-day taxi trajectory data set collected in Beijing; this large scale data set includes approximately 88.5 million trips of anonymous customers. The spatial distribution patterns of the pick-up points (PUPs) and the drop-off points (DOPs) on weekdays and weekends are analyzed first. The maximum of the morning and the evening peaks are at 8:00–10:00 and 17:00–19:00. The morning peaks of taxis are delayed by 0.5–1 h compared with the commuting morning peaks. Second, travel demand, intensity, time, and distance on weekdays and weekends are analyzed to explore human mobility. The travel demand and high-intensity travel of residents in Beijing is mainly concentrated within the 6th Ring Road. The residents who travel long distances ( 〉 10 km) and for a long time ( 〉 60 min) mainly from outside the 6th Ring Road and the surrounding new towns of Beijing. The circular structure of the travel distance distribution also confirms the single-center urban structure of Beijing. Finally, a new adapted chord diagram plot is proposed to achieve the spatial-temporal scale visualization of taxi trajectory origin–destination (OD) flows. The method can characterize the volume, direction, and properties of OD flows in multiple spatial-temporal scales; it is implemented using a circular visualization package in R (circlize). Through the visualization experiment of taxi GPS trajectory data in Beijing, the results show that the proposed visualization technology is able to characterize the spatial-temporal patterns of trajectory OD flows in multiple spatial-temporal scales. These results are expected to enhance current urban mobility research and suggest some interesting avenues for future research.

    Abstract: Effective predictive policing can guide police patrols and deter crime. Hourly crime prediction is expected to save police time. The selection of spatial resolution is important due to its strong relationship with the accuracy of crime prediction. In this paper, we propose an adaptive spatial resolution method to select the best spatial resolution for hourly crime prediction. The ST-ResNet model is applied to predict crime risk, with historical crime data and weather data as predictive variables. A prediction accuracy index (PAI) is used to evaluate the accuracy of the results. Data on property crimes committed in Suzhou, a big city in China, were selected as the research data. The experiment results indicate that a 2.4 km spatial resolution leads to the best performance for crime prediction. The adaptive spatial resolution method can be used to guide police deployment.
