    Abstract: Sci-tech parks (STPs), as a key space carrier of urbanization, have transformed into comprehensive parks with mixed urban functions and advanced hi-tech industries. The jobs–housing relationship, which is closely related to the two major urban functions of work and residence, affects the efficiency of urban operation. This study focused on the correlation between the jobs–housing relationship and the innovative development of STPs, adopting the Hangzhou West Hi-Tech Corridor as a case study. Four indicators reflecting the jobs–housing balance index and commuting distance and ten indicators reflecting agglomeration degree, development scale, innovative ability, financial status, and comprehensive development level of enterprises were selected to perform partial least squares regression. The results show that the jobs–housing relationship was correlated with the innovative development of STPs. Relatively short commuting distance may promote the development and agglomeration of sci-tech enterprises. However, short average commuting distance was not necessarily good. The working space and living space needed to be mixed at an appropriate scale and distance—to be close but not too close. This study provides references for the future development of STPs and the application of mixed-use zoning in the urban spatial planning; additionally, it supports for the research and practice of industry–city integration and urbanization.

    Abstract: The benefits of the natural environment in urban space have been explored in numerous studies. However, only a few statistics and studies have been conducted on the correlation between emotion and urban waterfront space, especially considering gender differences. Taking Wuhan city as an example, this study puts forward a new approach and perspective. Text emotion analysis is combined with the spatial analysis technique based on big data of social media. Based on the emotions of the public of different genders in urban space, suggestions are provided for urban planning and development from the perspective of POI (Point of Interest). The main steps are: (1) Analyzing the emotional score of Weibo texts published by citizens in the waterfront area of 21 lakes in Wuhan City; (2) exploring the public emotion characteristics of different genders in the urban waterfront; (3) classifying the waterfront according to the emotional response (score) of the public of different genders; (4) exploring the relationship between different POI types and waterfront types and proposing planning suggestions. The results of this study provide evidence for gender differences and spatial distribution of public emotions in the Wuhan waterfront area. It can help decision-makers to judge the prior protection and development direction of waterfront space, thus demonstrating the feasibility of this approach.

    Abstract: Recent developments in Web Service and Semantic Web technologies have shown great promise for the automatic chaining of geographic information services (GIService), which can derive user-specific information and knowledge from large volumes of data in the distributed information infrastructure. In order for users to have an informed understanding of products generated automatically by distributed GIServices, provenance information must be provided to them. This paper describes a three-level conceptual view of provenance: the automatic capture of provenance in the semantic execution engine; the query and inference of provenance. The view adapts well to the three-phase procedure for automatic GIService composition and can increase understanding of the derivation history of geospatial data products. Provenance capture in the semantic execution engine fits well with the Semantic Web environment. Geospatial metadata is tracked during execution to augment provenance. A prototype system is implemented to illustrate the applicability of the approach.

    Abstract: Hurricane Harvey in 2017 marked an important transition where many disaster victims used social media rather than the overloaded 911 system to seek rescue. This article presents a machine-learning-based detector of rescue requests from Harvey-related Twitter messages, which differentiates itself from existing ones by accounting for the potential impacts of ZIP codes on both the preparation of training samples and the performance of different machine learning models. We investigate how the outcomes of our ZIP code filtering differ from those of a recent, comparable study in terms of generating training data for machine learning models. Following this, experiments are conducted to test how the existence of ZIP codes would affect the performance of machine learning models by simulating different percentages of ZIP-code-tagged positive samples. The findings show that (1) all machine learning classifiers except K-nearest neighbors and Naïve Bayes achieve state-of-the-art performance in detecting rescue requests from social media; (2) using ZIP code filtering could increase the effectiveness of gathering rescue requests for training machine learning models; (3) machine learning models are better able to identify rescue requests that are associated with ZIP codes. We thereby encourage every rescue-seeking victim to include ZIP codes when posting messages on social media. This study is a useful addition to the literature and can be helpful for first responders to rescue disaster victims more efficiently.

    Abstract: Indoor positioning data reflects human mobility in indoor spaces. Revealing patterns of indoor trajectories may help us understand human indoor mobility. Clustering methods, which are based on the measurement of similarity between trajectories, are important tools for identifying those patterns. However, due to the specific characteristics of indoor trajectory data, it is difficult for clustering methods to measure the similarity between trajectories. These characteristics are manifested in two aspects. The first is that the nodes of trajectories may have clear semantic attributes; for example, in a shopping mall, the node of a trajectory may contain information such as the store type and visit duration time, which may imply a customer’s interest in certain brands. The semantic information can only be obtained when the position precision is sufficiently high so that the relationship between the customer and the store can be determined, which is difficult to realize for outdoor positioning, either using GPS or mobile base station, due to the relatively large positioning error. If the tendencies of customers are to be considered, the similarity of geometrical morphology does not reflect the real similarity between trajectories. The second characteristic is the complex spatial shapes of indoor trajectory caused by indoor environments, which include elements such as closed spaces, multiple obstacles and longitudinal extensions. To deal with these challenges caused by indoor trajectories, in this article we proposed a new method called E-DBSCAN, which extended DBSCAN to trajectory clustering of indoor positioning data. First, the indoor location data were transformed into a sequence of residence points with rich semantic information, such as the type of store customer visited, stay time and spatial location of store. Second, a Weighted Edit Distance algorithm was proposed to measure the similarity of the trajectories. Then, an experiment was conducted to verify the correctness of E-DBSCAN using five days of positioning data in a shopping mall, and five shopping behavior patterns were identified and potential explanations were proposed. In addition, a comparison was conducted among E-DBSCAN, the k-means and DBSCAN algorithms. The experimental results showed that the proposed method can discover customers’ behavioral pattern in indoor environments effectively.

    Abstract: Rapid urbanization in cities and urban centers has recently contributed to notable land use/land cover (LULC) changes, affecting both the climate and environment. Therefore, this study seeks to analyze changes in LULC and its spatiotemporal influence on the surface urban heat islands (UHI) in Abuja metropolis, Nigeria. To achieve this, we employed Multi-temporal Landsat data to monitor the study area’s LULC pattern and land surface temperature (LST) over the last 29 years. The study then analyzed the relationship between LULC, LST, and other vital spectral indices comprising NDVI and NDBI using correlation analysis. The results revealed a significant urban expansion with the transformation of 358.3 sq. km of natural surface into built-up areas. It further showed a considerable increase in the mean LST of Abuja metropolis from 30.65 °C in 1990 to 32.69 °C in 2019, with a notable increase of 2.53 °C between 2009 and 2019. The results also indicated an inverse relationship between LST and NDVI and a positive connection between LST and NDBI. This implies that urban expansion and vegetation decrease influences the development of surface UHI through increased LST. Therefore, the study’s findings will significantly help urban-planners and decision-makers implement sustainable land-use strategies and management for the city.
