    Abstract: This paper aims to propose a new approach to calculate the quantitative relations between morphostructural similarity degree and map scale change in multi-scale contour clusters for automatic contour generalization. Terrain lines were extracted by pre-processing of unclosed contour lines, and an indirect quantitative expression method of morphostructural similarity relation was proposed based on terrain line hierarchical trees. Thirteen groups of multi-scale contour clusters with different drainage areas of loess geomorphy were employed to explore the changing regularity of morphostructural similarity indices with map scale. Finally, the quantitative relations between morphostructural similarity degree and map scale change were calculated using 52 groups of points. The results show that power function is the best fit among the candidate functions, and the quantitative relations between the morphostructural similarity degree and map scale change can be expressed using the same power function, which facilitates the automation of contour generalization.

    Abstract: Global climate change and human activities have resulted in immense changes in the Earth’s ecosystem, and the interaction between the land surface and the atmosphere is one of the most important processes. Wind is a reference for studying atmospheric dynamics and climate change, analyzing the wind speed change characteristics in historical periods, and studying the influence of wind on the Earth-atmosphere interaction; additionally, studying the wind, contributes to analyzing and alleviating a series of problems, such as the energy crisis, environmental pollution, and ecological deterioration facing human beings. In this study, data from 697 meteorological stations in China from 2000 to 2019 were used to study the distribution and trend of wind speed over the past two decades. The relationships between wind speed and climate factors were explored using statistical methods; furthermore, combined with terrain, climate change, and human activities, we quantified the contribution of environmental factors to wind speed. The results show that a downward trend was recorded before 2011, but overall, there was an increasing trend that was not significant; moreover, the wind speed changes showed obvious seasonality and were more complicated on the monthly scale. The wind speed trend mainly increased in the western region, decreased in the eastern region, was higher in the northeastern, northwestern, and coastal areas, and was lower in the central area. Temperature, bright sunshine duration, evaporation, and precipitation had a strong influence, in which wind speed showed a significant negative correlation with temperature and precipitation and vice versa for sunshine and evapotranspiration. The influence of environmental factors is diverse, and these results could help to develop environmental management strategies across ecologically fragile areas and improve the design of wind power plants to make better use of wind energy.

    Abstract: The literature in the field of archaeological predictive models has grown in the last years, looking for new factors the most effective methods to introduce. However, where predictive models are used for archaeological heritage management, they could benefit from using a more speedy and consequently useful methods including some well-consolidated factors studied in the literature. In this paper, an operative archaeological predictive model is developed, validated and discussed, in order to test its effectiveness. It is applied to Yangshao period (5000–3000 BC) in the Songshan area, where Chinese civilization emerged and developed, and uses 563 known settlement sites. The satisfactory results herein achieved clearly suggest that the model herein proposed can be reliably used to predict the geographical location of unknown settlements.

    Abstract: Building displacement is a common operation to resolve the spatial conflicts between map features, and it has important theoretical value and practical application significance for multi-scale mapping. The prerequisite for a successful displacement operation is that there is extra space around the conflicting buildings into which they can be displaced. Otherwise, additional generalization operators need to be combined to resolve spatial conflicts. Based on this idea, this study proposes a new heuristic spatial conflict resolution framework that mainly resolves the spatial conflicts between buildings and other features in urban villages by combining three cartographic generalization operators: selection, displacement, and aggregation. This method first reduces the density of buildings in the block through selection operation, then resolves the spatial conflicts between buildings and other features through displacement operation, and finally, the aggregation operation is performed to eliminate any remaining conflicts and newly generated conflicts. Experiments were carried out using real urban village data, and visual inspection and quantitative analysis were used to evaluate the experimental results. The evaluation results show that the proposed framework can not only resolve spatial conflicts well, but also maintain the spatial distribution and area balance of the buildings in urban villages.

    Abstract: The major reason that the fully automated generalization of residential areas has not been achieved to date is that it is difficult to acquire the knowledge that is required for automated generalization and for the calculation of spatial similarity degrees between map objects at different scales. Furthermore, little attention has been given to generalization methods with a scale reduction that is larger than two-fold. To fill this gap, this article develops a hybrid approach that combines two existing methods to generalize residential areas that range from 1:10,000 to 1:50,000. The two existing methods are Boffet’s method for free space acquisition and kernel density analysis for city hotspot detection. Using both methods, the proposed approach follows a knowledge-based framework by implementing map analysis and spatial similarity measurements in a multiscale map space. First, the knowledge required for residential area generalization is obtained by analyzing multiscale residential areas and their corresponding contributions. Second, residential area generalization is divided into two subprocesses: free space acquisition and urban area outer boundary determination. Then, important parameters for the two subprocesses are obtained through map analysis and similarity measurements, reflecting the knowledge that is hidden in the cartographer’s mind. Using this acquired knowledge, complete generalization steps are formed. The proposed approach is tested using multiscale datasets from Lanzhou City. The experimental results demonstrate that our method is better than the traditional methods in terms of location precision and actuality. The approach is robust, comparatively insensitive to the noise of the small buildings beyond urban areas, and easy to implement in GIS software.

    Abstract: Quantitative relations between topological similarity degree and map scale change of multi-scale contour clusters are vital to the automation of map generalization. However, no method has been proposed to calculate the relations. This paper aims at filling the gap by proposing a new approach. It firstly constructed a directed contour tree by pre-processing of unclosed contours, and then developed a quantitative expression of topological relations of contour cluster based on directed contour tree. After this, it employed 108 groups of multi-scale contour clusters with different geomorphological types to explore the changing regularity of topological indices with map scale. Last, it used 416 points to calculate the quantitative relations between topological similarity degree and map scale change by curve fitting method. The results show that the quantitative expression of multi-scale topological indexes is closely related to the contour interval change, and power function is the best fit among the candidate functions.
